Tim Hortons is squaring off against the city of Toronto over proposed regulations that would require coffee cup lids to be made out of the same material as paper cups to encourage more recycling.
The controversial proposal is the city's latest attempt to reduce waste because most paper coffee cups have plastic lid and can't be thrown into the same recycling bin in Toronto.
Tim Hortons argues it's not responsible for how its coffee cups get recycled and says the city should be able to find a way to separate plastic lids from paper cups. The city argues most people don't detach the lid from the cup for correct sorting, which means more than 365 million coffee cups end up in Toronto's garbage.
Who do you think is responsible for proper recycling? Should people simply be educated that it's important to separate plastic from paper? Or should governments get involved in forcing businesses to change practices to make products easier to recycle?
