Yeah, but traditional rubbers and plastics are carbon based.

Ever seen how rubber and plastics that are silicone based do?

I've tinkered around with silicone rubbers, and it's frankly freaky how strong they are.

I just know that anything not natural has a very short lifespan in the arctic and i've been there when it's been -70 for weeks.

-80 with the windchill.

Have you ever tinkered around in an arctic breeze? It's freaky how strong they are. I'm not so sure lighter-than-air in a condom is a place to be.

I used to think my area of southern Alberta was allmost the windiest spot in Canada untill I went to the Arctic. Ive seen huge shops called coveralls blow away never to be seen again, our heaters all had 100 pound rocks on them and the shi**ers all had inukshuks built inside to keep them from blowing away.

When you can get 300 foot snowdrifts in an area allmost classed as desert because of the lack of precipitation it gives you an idea of how hard the wind blows.
That snow had to come from somewhere.

We used to have to screw the skids of the choppers down to keep them from blowing away.

But the ice and cold wasteland MUST be patrolled and looked at.

Can you imagine simply patrolling that area 24/7-365?

Thats what the rangers do,on snowmobile and sled dogs.
When our chopper crashed the air force had planes from Winnipeg over the area in no time searching for the location.
we could hear the hercs but couldnt see them as it was a zero visibility ground blizzard going on at the time,I was in my trusty go trak with a gps for guidance then.
I used to be just amazed though flying over the arctic at how big it was,the lack of people and roads.
The people who live there have to be some of the toughest in the world.

Around Lethbridge? I spent a considerable amount of time in that part of the country, and I thought it was the most obnoxiously windy place on the planet... I could never figure out why they didn't set up windmills and generate electricity.

Hmm... and you patrol on land with dog-sleds instead of snowmobiles. That's interesting.

They can mobilize from Cold lake to the Arctic very quickly and thats one thing you do see up north is jets.
What are they doing? Responding to something that looks suspicious, or just exercising?

Answers to all questions;
70 miles west of Lethbridge is one of Canada's biggest wind farms.(Cowley ridge)
They patrol with both sleds, quads, boats and dogs, they dont have to take spares when they use dogs.
I take it the jets are doing both exercising and patroling, they dont say much about it for obvious reasons.
They can get up there very quickly if need be as demonstrated when our chopper crashed.

Yeah, but not with fighter-bombers.
You would take that back if you were ever in Cold lake when the fighters break the sound barrier going overhead.

I worked for a bit at the cold lake weapons range, they used to scare the hell out of me and give me goosebumps at the same time, truly awesome to watch them doing manouvers which they did allmost every day.
They would give me a map every morning showing where they would be targeting and also remind us not to look at the jets as they werent sure what the lasers could do to your eyes.

I've been there, and I know what you're talking about.

Me and another fellow were on a cut-line, and he says, "Hey what's that", and we could see a little dot down the line on the horizon.

It just seemed to be suspended there, floating, and he says, "I think it's getting bigger."

Suddenly - *KERPOW* as it shoots overhead.

Damn that was impressive.

Still, I think if Ottawa is hell-bent on spending $16 billion, it should be something other than fighter-bombers, which are mainly for hitting large ground targets.

Usually when a fighter-bomber gets into a skirmish with tactical fighters it's only option ends up being to crank the throttle and run.

I think bombers allways have a fighter escort and I also dont think we will be bombing anyone, just chasing off the odd Russkie jet to show our commitment to protecting our airspace to the Americans.
They do send Russian probes and we do intercept them, good to let them know we are watching and are there.

They can plant as many flags at the bottom of the ocean as they want to but when Ivan throttles into our airspace and sees a couple maple leafs on his ass then he knows we arent fuc*ing around.
They try it all the time, see how far they can go.

I know... I hear you, and I understand all that. They do it partly to keep their pilots trained and partly out of diplomatic curiosity to see if we'll respond.

It's just that F-35s aren't the right kind of craft to intercept with.

(And I still think we should equip a sub with a Canadarm and follow the Russians and pull up the flags everywhere they drop one.)

What would you want from a soggy flag? Litter in International waters is hardly something feasible to harvest
I'd want to collect them and hang them on the wall.

It's all about diplomacy. They send fighters into our airspace and we intercept... they drop flags on our ocean floor, so we should follow along pulling them up. At the very least it's an exercise is tracking and tailing for the submariners.
