We have a good high jumper and are defending Ladies trampoline champs, so there is that. Costs a lot of money that adds to the deficit and interest though.
Plus the body positive movement is kind of the opposite of what the Olympics idealizes. Could have short, fat people high jumping as long as it is competitive.
Funding athletes which once again translates into funding coaching and management has to go. There is no need.

Is it fair to judge a pole jumper by their ability to jump over a pole? Not very inclusive.

Track and Field could do better at promoting their sport, which to me would be as good or better than the Olympics and probably better for the sports to have regular annual seasons. Ben Johnson and Carl Lewis was exciting stuff.

Just the fact that you have to qualify is not very inclusive.Just because you are physically phitt should not disqualify anyone that self identifies as a champion.
You could also just identify as physically fit as well.
Last night, I saw videos on facebook showing how there were so many protesters against the Olympics. I knew that there are many people who hated it but I never knew that someone would really go to the extent of water gunning the torch during the ceremony. It was crazy.

TOKYO — A Tokyo hotel has apologised and removed signs saying “Japanese only” and “foreigners only” from elevators after the anti-COVID-19 precaution sparked outrage on social media ahead of the 2020 Summer Olympics.

Tokyo entered a state of emergency on Monday amid concerns that an influx of tens of thousands of athletes and officials during the July 23-August 8 Games will spread the coronavirus, cases of which are already rising in the Japanese capital.
Akasaka Excel Hotel Tokyu in downtown Tokyo put up the signs on Friday in response to guidance from Tokyo 2020 organizers to ensure the movements of guests related to the Games were separated from others staying at the hotel, a hotel official told Reuters on Monday.
The official, who declined to be identified because of the sensitivity of the subject, said there was no intention to discriminate against foreigners.
“We tried to make it easy to understand but ended up causing misunderstanding,” the official said. He said the signs were removed on Sunday morning and the hotel was now discussing with its headquarters what expression to use instead.

The signs triggered harsh criticism on social media, with one Twitter user tweeting “Apartheid has been revived in Japan.”
Another likened the signs to U.S. “Jim Crow” measures, since struck down by courts, designed to keep Blacks from voting in the U.S. Deep South.
“The virus has nothing to do with nationality,” tweeted Twitter user Anna.
Japan has not seen the explosive coronavirus outbreak seen elsewhere but has recorded more than 815,440 cases and nearly 15,000 deaths. Tokyo alone recorded 614 new cases on Sunday, the 22nd straight day of week-on-week gains.
Japan’s vaccination rollout got off to a slow start and although it later accelerated, supply glitches are causing it to stumble. Only about 28% of the population have received at least one vaccine shot.

Anyone watching? I would really like to know the total dollar cost of the entire Olympic program. Remember they operate as a private corporation and don't have to disclose their books. My guess is an easy $10 billion annually
Andre Degrassi takes home the bronze once again after 15 years of funding and living the life of an International celebrity all on the tax payer dime. And surfing is now an Olympic sport. Canada needs a strong surfing contingent and many coaches to go along with our many good snow boarders and their coaches. It can only be a matter of time before video gaming will also be an Olympic sport that requires federal aid.
Axe the whole thing. Times have changed and people have moved on. One more thing that has become more about the jobs than the original objectives and intent.

When one thinks of Italy, pizza comes to mind, right?
That’s what a South Korean television station thought when it came to representing the country during its broadcast of the opening ceremony of the 2020 Tokyo Summer Olympic Games last week.
Freelance journalist Raphael Rashid took to Twitter to bring attention to what he called the unique descriptions of each country during the broadcast.
“South Korean broadcaster MBC used images to ‘represent’ each country during the #Tokyo2020 Opening Ceremony,” Rashid tweeted.
“Italy: pizza; Norway: salmon’ Haiti: upheaval; Ukraine: Chernobyl.”

“When Haitian athletes entered the stadium, an on-screen explanation said ‘the political situation is fogged by the assassination of the president,’ Rashid further explained in the thread. “When Syrian athletes entered, it said ‘rich underground resources; a civil war that has been going on for 10 years.'”
Needless to say, the imagery sparked outrage, prompting MBC to apologize. According to the BBC, the television channel hoped the pictures and descriptions would help viewers understand each country, but admitted it was an “inexcusable mistake.”
“I bow my head and deeply apologize,” MBC CEO Park Sung-jae said during a Monday press conference, noting the channel will be focusing its efforts to “prevent another accident from happening.”

Apparently, it’s not the first time MBC has been in hot water for controversial images. The channel did the same thing during the opening ceremony of the 2008 Beijing Olympics and was fined for its actions.
