…To learn about oneself one needs a great deal of humility. If you start by saying, “I know myself”, you’ve already stopped learning about yourself. Or if you say, “There is nothing much to learn about myself because I know what I am—I’m a bundle of memories, ideas, experiences, tradition, a conditioned entity with innumerable contradictory reactions”—you’ve stopped learning about yourself. To learn about oneself requires considerable humility, never assuming that you know anything: that is, learning about oneself from the beginning and never accumulating. The moment you accumulate knowledge about yourself through your own discovery, that becomes the platform from which you begin to examine, learn, and therefore what you learn is merely further addition to what you already know. Humility is a state of mind that never acquires, never says, “I know”.
Your point of view .

While I get what you're saying, to a large degree I think knowing yourself also requires self esteem and assuredness. Too much humility is just as detrimental as an over inflated self esteem. Balance.

I think the knowledge than you can learn and have learned and willalways be learning is the key, with the humility you describe andrealization that you will be learning all through your life, andwhat you have learned previously is just a stepping stone to allowyou to continue.I have heard people who are highly learned speak of themselves aspupils who need to keep striving to improve. It never stops china, our capacity is immense and the brain neverseems to fill up with information,( whether it be about oneself, or other things)and be 'full'to the brim, thatis a wonderful thing.

Maybe you can't really know yourself unless you do lots of acid, or maybe you have to wait till you're dead to get a look at the old photo album of your life where you'll see the whole recorded history of your earthbound passage. I know people whos heads are full to the brim plugged with useless trivia that stains their shirts as it squirts out of their ears. We should try and keep a clean tidy headspace in case a good idea visits. I need to get a new broom, one with coarse corn splits, to reach the grime between the old cells.

Why in the world would one need to be arrogant or humble with oneself? When I make myself curious about something about me, being humble or arrogant isn't even on the horizon. I drop traits like that like hot rocks.
