There have been 18 US school shootings this year. Is it time to arm teachers?

"Men also have unequal access to guns and training in using weapons like handguns and rifles."
Bullshit. Are you seriously suggesting that women have a harder time purchasing firearms and joining things like shooting and hunting clubs?

hmmmm - this sounds interesting.

white men are less able to handle life's little ups and downs and have access to guns and often use those guns to kill their imaginary enemies.
Wow, did you pull that "factoid" out of your ass? You mean like all the Black gang-bangers out there? You mean like how 13% of the US population is responsible for 52% of all homicides and 55% of all other violent crimes not including homicide? Yeah, now who has the f*cking problem with life's little ups and downs? To put it in a nutshell, Black people in the US do more killing than Whitey.

Oh, and btw, those stats come from the FBI and the DoJ. I have no idea where you got your idiotic ideas from.

The old fashioned isolationism of America is sorely needed these days.

Since they have decided to police the world everything has gone for a dump.

It is really hard to see what advantage it has brought to the American people other than a growing planetary dislike of America and it's people. Regime changes were temporary, if at all. Cheap Middle Eastern oil wasn't. The US is bankrupt, if proper accounting were conducted. The World is not a better place and the body USA has become sick in the process.

Good to know there are some right thinking people here. Yup, that's correct - right thinking as this is and has always been a conservative solution to the mess created by politicians of both parties and by their corporate welfare seeking puppet string masters.

And some of you thought I was a liberal, huh? ;)

Maybe a Dr's note should be part of the application process or perhaps address the obvious issues kids are going through and stop the creation of kids who feel they have nothing to live for?

We have school cops. Even elementary schools and have had them since I was a kid.

School Resource – Regina Police Service

Program Summary
The Regina Police Service School Resource Officer Program utilizes the concept of community policing with officers acting as a resource to faculty, students, parents and community within a school environment. An officer is assigned to each Regina High School with responsibility for a number of elementary schools. Each School Resource Officer has an office within his/her high school(s) and interacts with students, teachers, school staff and parents on a daily basis. School Resource Officers provide education on safety, substance abuse, life skills and the justice system to Elementary and High School students. School Resource Officers also investigate complaints to police involving schools. In some cases mediation brings about a successful resolution to the complaint; in other cases a criminal charge may result. There are thirteen School Resource Officers assigned to Regina’s high schools and elementary schools.

Old here. New and upsetting to parents in some regions of Canada from what I gathered in BC when brought up by Metro mayors.

Yes. Very right people who ignore what created the shooter but blame the gun

Blame what created the shooter and blame his easy, unfettered access to firearms. Both are equally culpable.

A certain percentage of young people in every culture become unhinged around adolescence but the ability for them to accumulate an armoury of automatics with honking great magazines is uniquely American. It doesn't happen anywhere else on this planet (except in Saskatchewan, according to Petros).

Similar programs have been around for years, but in urban centres like Toronto and Vancouver. The parents don't want the "jack boots" there, but who are the first to cry foul when something goes on at their kid's HS?

We adopted a lock down program when I was still teaching. Red or green stickers on doors. Green indicated that the door to a class, storage or other room could be locked, and was safer than being in the open, or in a room with a red sticker. Not lockable. Sit tight. Sit quiet. Someone will be along to get you later.

A run and hide policy when you could have a cop.

Funny, just put some out for my cat....not even joking.

Strong stuff that wafted all the way over to the gun crime laden Peel Region.

Who used automatics?

Pardon me ..."semi automatics". Any idiot with a modicum of mechanical ability can turn one into another by various means. It takes a match stick to turn an FN-C1 into an FN-C2. That very weird mass murderer in Las Vegas mimicked it with a wobbly stock.

Fortunately, I do not live in Peel Region but the every kind of crime that you can think of rate there is a fraction of what it it's in every single Western city. That's the sick part of the country, right now not Mississauga.

The philosophy for the red/green doors is that most gunmen are on a mission and they know time is at a premium. They aren't playing with a full deck and will chase targets of opportunity. Locked doors aren't worth trying to breech. The original idea came from the US. It is successful. Much more than telling kids to run for the exit doors.
