With all the anti-Americanism lately, I'd decided to create this thread to look at what the US has given Canada.

What would you say is the US' greatest gift to Canada?

Personally, I'd say, at least on the legal front, the US Bill of Rights along with President Franklin Roosevelt's 'Four Freedoms' speech. Sure the US Bill of Rights does not have any legal standing in Canada. However, it, along with other national bills of rights, did influence the drafting of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which in turn influenced the drafting of multiple national bills of rights, including our own Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

President Franklin Roosevel, (especially through his 'four Freedoms' speech) and his wife Eleanor Roosevelt were also instrumental in promoting the development of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. We can also take pride in the fact that a Canadian, John Peters Humphry, was the Declaration's principle drafter. Sure it's also had influences from the Bill of Rights 1689, the Declaration des droits de l'homme et du citoyen, and the Code Napoleon among others, but there is no denying that the US Bill of Rights was also among them, and that roosevelt's Four Freedoms' speech was instrumental in the promotion of such a declaration. Had it not been for these two gifts from the US, our own Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms could very well have looked different today.

What would you say is the US' greatest gift to Canada?

Lots of people, and with perfect justification, based on his outlandish theories, passed of as facts, might think that he is an alien from a totally unreal alien world.

Many more people say that Bush is the Antichrist from Hell for his bizarre theories about imaginary WMD.

And yet he beat not only Al Gore, but the tax-dodging, pimping gigolo, John Kerry, as well.

Gopher the Rodent - Gore was for Bio Fuels until the science proved him wrong. Wow. Another idol with feet of clay.

Well Porky, Bush was for starting Armageddon in order to stop Saddam but his own ''intelligence' people proved him wrong. Brilliant wasn't he?

Science. The American tax payer finances a lot of science, and that benefits people around the world.

well...of course..... because Canada, and/or the rest of the world, for that matter, contributes basically nothing to scientific advancement.

Really? I can think of a few Canadian contributions off the top of my head. Can't we acknowledge US contributions to science without having to deny the contribution of other countries too?

Seriously, take a few deep breath and relax before you blow an artery.

In my family, gifts go both ways...and the greatness of a gift isn't measured by what the recipient of my gift gave to me.

But maybe my family is weird like that.

I see you come from a unique family with unique traditions.

Really? It's unique not to expect anything in return for what you give? Do YOU expect a gift in return? Or do you wait till you recieve a gift before giving? That I would find, not only unique, but quite disturbing.

in mine, we don't expect that the gifts go both ways.

Like I said, maybe my family is weird like that. I'm not sure how you decide who to give a gift to, and I don't really care, except that I guess that explains your interpretation of what I said.

The science produced by Americans is a very good gift to the world. I think one of their greatest gifts. Just because it's a good gift doesn't diminish Canadian scientific breakthroughs at all. That is a childish attitude. Well, maybe more trollish than childish.
