The Super Bowl has got to be one of the most tedious sporting occasions ever. American Football as a whole is tedious. There are more stoppages than actualy gameplay. A player takes the ball, throws it to another player and if that player fails to catch it and the ball lands on the floor then play stop for another 20 minutes and we go to the TV adverts again. I have watched the first hour or so of the Super Bowl for the last two or three years - we have it live on TV in the early hours of the morning - but after a while, trying to figure out the rules of the game but struggling to do so because there isn't much gameplay, I lose the will to live, turn the TV off and go to bed.

A proper sporting occasion is the FA Cup Final or the Ashes or the Premier League (in which a record 41 goals were scored yesterday). The FA Cup Final, English football's equivalent of the Super Bowl, has none of the razzmatazz that the Super Bowl has (North Americans, though, like razzmatazz), where half-time lasts 2 hours so we can watch performances from the likes of The Black Eyed Peas and The Rolling Stones. No, it's just great sporting action all the way through with just 15 minutes for half-time. The sport takes precedent over the advertising.

You forgot the part where none of the players are trusted to be able to think while they play, they have to stand around and discuss what to do, and make sure the coach approves from the sidelines. Then they play for 15 or 20 seconds, and stop to figure out what to do next.

The concept of football is good, the implementation of it at the professional level is horrendous.

I agree with you about ads. I'm not a fan of them. I'd rather watch the game.

That being said, once you really know the game it's far more interesting. It's a chess match on grass, except the knight will take your head off.

never said that...

the play clock on a typical play in the NFL can take longer than 20 seconds.. depending on the situation.

The two points that I made, that you disagreed with, were that a typical play lasts about 20 seconds, and that the players huddle before every play to discuss what to do.

You disagreed with those two points, because you know everything there is to know about football.

So, in what way are those two points wrong?

Football is a world event?

No I wouldn't say a world event. Baseball is probably bigger world wide that football.

My point being that if you don't even know what and when the Super Bowl is, then you
are out of touch with current events. Because it is publicized that well.

A regulation NFL game consists of four quarters of 15 minutes each, but because the typical play only lasts about four seconds, the ratio of inaction to action is approximately 10 to 1.

In fact, a typical NFL game has less than 11 minutes of actual play.

Then "current events" just aren't all that important.
