Key Verified Instances of CGI or Fabricated Depictions
Al-Shifa Hospital "Command Center"
Animation (October-November 2023):
On October 27, 2023, the IDF released a detailed CGI animation purporting to show an elaborate underground Hamas headquarters beneath Gaza's Al-Shifa Hospital, including command rooms, electrical systems, and blast doors. This was used to justify an impending IDF raid on the hospital, a major civilian medical facility.
The animation was explicitly computer-generated (not real footage) and described by the IDF as an "illustration" based on intelligence. However, it was presented in official briefings and media as representative of what would be found, fueling public and international support for the operation.
Post-raid investigations, including by the BBC and The Guardian, found that while a 55-meter concrete tunnel shaft with basic rooms (e.g., a bathroom and storage area) existed under the hospital—used by Hamas for weapons storage and operations—the scale and sophistication shown in the CGI did not match reality. No full "command center" was uncovered, and the evidence fell short of initial IDF claims.
A Spanish TV investigation by LaSexta (broadcast on Israeli channels like Channel 12 and Kan 11 in November 2023) revealed that elements of the 3D footage traced directly to assets from the video game Escape from Tarkov, including tunnel textures, modular walls, and lighting effects created in game engines like Unity or Unreal. 3D animation experts confirmed it was simulated, not authentic surveillance or drone imagery, and lacked real-world inconsistencies like dust or uneven lighting. This was used to visually amplify claims of Hamas infrastructure under civilian sites.
Faked Tunnel Image in the Philadelphi Corridor (August 2024):
In August 2024, amid ceasefire negotiations, the IDF posted an image on X claiming it showed a 3-meter-deep Hamas smuggling tunnel under the Gaza-Egypt border (Philadelphi Corridor). It was promoted as evidence justifying a prolonged Israeli military presence there.
Former Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant later accused the military of fabricating the claim:
An internal investigation by Israel's Kan broadcaster revealed the image depicted a 1-meter-deep irrigation canal covered in dirt, not a tunnel. Gallant stated this was deliberately exaggerated "to prevent reaching a deal with Hamas" and stall truce talks, including a proposed 5-7 year ceasefire and hostage exchange
