You may not believe it had "no effect" on Damar but millions of people do. What's so wonderful about it is that there is NOTHING you can do to change their beliefs. It brings people peace and why would anyone want to take that away from them? You believe what you want to and leave those who do alone.
As long as their beliefs don't motivate them to throw rocks at Black kids, or LGBTQ+ kids, or kids with AIDS.

Or fly airplanes into buildings.

Double negative there, DC. The number of people who believe something to be true has nothing to do with whether or not it's actually true. I'm not trying to change their beliefs or take anything away from them, I'm just expressing what I believe, on the basis of actual evidence, to be true. And why should I leave them alone? The religious don't leave me, or anybody else, alone, they're constantly proselytizing. If they can express their views freely, so can I.

Well, at least she went with argumentum ad populum instead of argumentum ad antiquatam.

The answer, of course, is your mama's old "If everybody jumped off a bridge. . ."

Yes, perhaps it’s a tad more intellectually respectable fallacy, in that an idea a lot of people believe to be true has a better chance of really being true than an idea that’s merely old. But it’s still a fallacy.

I’m often struck by the hidden assumptions behind a lot of religious arguments. False comfort is better than no comfort, the truth doesn’t matter, and views with the religious label on them deserve automatic respect and should not be challenged. I’ve been calling BS on those my whole adult life.

The faith by some about the 'fact' that there is nothing there is as strong as the faith of others that there is something there. Equally annoying.

So exactly how are the "religious" not "leave you alone?" Where are you going that they're bothering you? Are you attending their churches, mosques or synagogues? Is it because they speak out publicly of their beliefs? Exactly how do they affect you? Context please.

When they try to write their fairy tale into the civil laws.

Just to amplify TB's response a bit: Members of several sects routinely come uninvited to my door to preach at me and leave tracts in my mailbox, some have tried to have certain books removed from libraries around here, many of them try to insert their views into public policy on issues like abortion, civil rights for the many non-binary among us, stem cell research, and other things, and I have several fundie relatives who keep trying to save me. They do speak out publicly of their beliefs, and your comment that I should leave them alone suggests you think I should not. Not going to happen.

No, I just used what occurred to me in ten seconds of thinking about it. "Enough" would be a book length exposition, which wouldn't fly here. Besides, that's been done by several people: Daniel Dennett, Richard Dawkins, Sam Harris, Christopher Hitchens, and among the lesser known, S. T. Joshi, Victor Stenger, John Allen Paulos, Michael Onfray, George H. Smith, David Ramsay Steele...

I was making a funny. Or maybe a not-so-funny. The underlying meaning was that you produced ample reason why people flaunting their religiosity rubs you the wrong way.

I enjoy your quick wit, TB. No disrespect intended, DS.
I like TB's wit as well, that did make me laugh, though I also recognized the underlying more serious thought in it, characteristic of the best wit, and that's what I decided to respond to. No offense taken Motar, I'm not that thin skinned, it's not like he was mocking me, I took it to mean that, among other things, he liked my answer.

Concerning Bill C-11, Senator David Richards states: “Few deeds are worse than using a pretense of good for nefarious purposes”

“Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who put darkness for light and light for darkness, who put bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter. Woe to those who are wise in their own eyes and clever in their own sight” (Isaiah 5:20-21).
