Some have already implemented energy saving measures throughout their everyday life. You can't know that, but you feel comfortable speaking about a whole group without knowing.
That to me, is funny. Laughable. Haha. Not to worry, you're not the only one being laughed at.
THis is something I wanted to give a much more expansive answer to but didn't have time.
Agreed, lots of people have implemented energy saving measures. I do it myself for financial reasons, many people do it to "help save the planet". But what they do is minimal. I know of no-one who even tries to live as though he/she believes AGW is a real threat. I do know one family that does more than most. They have a vegan, 100 mile (as much as possible) diet, they use bicycle transportation as much as possible, they live the way most people won't. But they still have a car and drive it occasionally, they still have electric lights and gas heat and hot water, they still have a computer and telephones. In short, they aren't living as though they believed the AGW threat was real.
And that's the crux of the whole earth hour nonsense. It's a meaningless token. If people (including you and SJP) really believed in AGW as a real threat they'd try to live in the way they claim is necessary to save the world. AGW is a belief system. Imagine if other faiths acted the same way. Islam, Orthodox Judaism and Christianity all have basic beliefs that shape the lives of their followers. Oh, certainly no-one is expected to live 100% in accordance with those faiths, but at least they make reasonable efforts to conduct themselves within the rules they claim to believe in. Could you imagine the reaction of the media if all they were required to do was stop performing one sin for one hour a year?
If you're old enough, you'll recall about 25 years ago when televangelism was on a roll and the biggest of them all was the Reverend Jimmy Swaggart. The media pointed out the fact that he lived in a mansion situated on 20 manicured acres, that he was getting filthy rich from his faith, yet his followers made excuses for him. (Remind you of anyone contemporary?) But when he got caught fooling around with a hooker (twice) the media had a field day (and rightly so) and his flock abandoned him. It was the end of his ministry. Televangelists were expected to live according to their faiths. Why aren't AGW high priests expected to do the same? Jimmy did live properly for much of his career, but Al Gore has never even pretended to try. If the great high priest of AGW with his huge carbon footprint won't even pretend, why should his followers do more?
If you really believe that AGW is a real threat, you would have to live in as small an abode as possible, bathe or shower no more than once a week, have only 1 or 2 hot meals per week, no fridge or freezer, no restaraunt meals, no coffee shops, no bars. Walk or use bicycles, no cars, not even public transit. No air travel ever, for any reason. No carbon emitting recreation of any kind, no powered yard equipment, no electrical powered products (blow-dryers, toasters, shavers, computers, saws). Never purchase imports, use only one flourescent light at a time, live in the dark most of the night time, house temperatures no more than 10C (dress warmly), no air conditioning ever. And don't have children.
Think that's extreme? How else will you reduce your emissions by 80% as required by the alarmists? Is anyone in Canada living like that? Not a chance. Do I feel comfortable speaking about a whole group without knowing? No, but then I do know, so I'm very comfortable speaking about them. Not you, not SJP, not anyone who participated or supported earth hour in Canada is living as though they believed AGW is a real threat. After earth hour was over you all switched everything back on again and demonstrated to the world that you aren't any more willing than the "deniers" to do what is necessary to "save the planet".
