Lowest unemployment rate in Canada since 1976.
f@#k Trudeau?
Big f*cking deal. Let's take a look at Decembers numbers. 70% of the new jobs are part time jobs, or 54,900 out of 79,000. Of the 23,700 full-time positions that opened up, 22,000 of those were public sector jobs. Leaving a whopping 1700 full-time private sector jobs.
So the great news is, out of roughly 79,000 new jobs created in Canada in December, a whopping 0.02% of them are full-time private sector jobs.
Sorry sport, but if your wages aren't enough to support yourself, then you're not gainfully employed. My father worked for the various incarnations of E.I. through the years starting when it was still the UIC. He always hated the way the govt reported the employment rate because he believed that the only employment stat that really matters is gainful employment. A part-time minimum wage job is more like a paid hobby than actual employment.
Years ago when Mulroney signed the original FTA, he announced that for every job lost in the manufacturing sector, three more jobs would be created elsewhere. Unfortunately, he also saw Canada's future as a service sector economy. The problem with that is those jobs tend to be on the lowest end of the pay scale. At that time, the average wage of a factory worker where I lived was around $18/hr. So three minimum wage jobs would need to be created to replace the lost income from one $18/hr job. But there's a problem with that. Three people making $6/hr do NOT have the same spending power as one person making $18/hr. The other problem is those types of jobs also tend to be part-time.
That's what's going on now. The bulk of the jobs being created outside of the public sector do NOT pay a living wage.
I'm not sure if it's fair to categorize wage slavery as employment.
