Target To Lay Off Thousands Of Zellers Employees

If you've set foot in a Zellers in the last 10 years, it's not hard to understand why they went under, and in my mind, that is PRECISELY why I won't criticize Target for laying people off and starting fresh. You walk in the door, and you can almost feel as you move through the store, the 30 foot bubble around you that any employee refuses to breach... they scuttle away like cockroaches, and on numerous occasions we've had to actually say 'don't walk away from me'. The one here was always filthy, the bathrooms somewhere that made you feel like you needed to go home and shower. The tellers were rude. The merchandise was poorly displayed, badly priced. All of that implies that from the very lowest level, to the highest, no one gave a damn. Why would you keep that work force? Why do they 'deserve' employment? Let that be a lesson to the non-unionized workers indeed.... you're supposed to work, and if you don't, your business may fold or you may be fired. The only way to ensure yourself of a job is to BE VALUABLE.

or take the discount that every employee gets.

In similar stores the employees are likely to be also, the same, most are on AISH or have a similar background in society. Go to the other end of the mall and enter Sears or Hudson's Bay and you get the brand-name items and staff that has post secondary education and I'm sure the wages reflect that. The customers reflect that change also.

I wonder if Target would sell Canadian clothes made out of Canadian hemp?

I wouldn't compare Zellers to bigger higher end stores, I'd compare them to similar stores, like London Drugs (better service, better managed), Wal-Mart (better service, better managed), Dollar Stores (I think you get where I'm going with this). Zellers does not have a uniquely high number of 'poor' employees.

Zellers has been on it's way out since about the mid-90's. I worked there, part time, when my daughter was young, haven't worked there in about 10-12 years. But I can remember, even then, the trickle out the door of managers, regional managers, district managers, etc. It's a top down problem. When the upper echelons don't care, they are not going to retain the kind of front line staff that does.

Think there would be a similar level of post secondary people found at Zellers and Wal-mart (specifically) and the clothes they sell would be found near a greyhound station rather than an international airport. Most people are going to feel more comfortable in one place over the other. To give you a real life example would require posting more than I'm willing to. That is social structuring rather than being racial or a 'dis-advantaged' issue. I don't expect to see a great deal of change in products in quality or list. Zellers is a grocery and hardware store, that seems to work better if having cars in the parking lot means anything so changing the name to Target means little in terms of who will be shopping there. I hear Boxing Day needs extra security so ...... no real change.
(I think you get where I'm going with this, should you pay double when you come to the Goodwill Store in a (new) BMW?)

When the upper echelons don't care, they are not going to retain the kind of front line staff that does.
Is that anything like stockholders vs unions/environmentalists in any business today?

SuperStore recently changed it's colors and its shelving, were they bought out in a quiet takeover?

No, I really don't get where you're going with it as it pertains to the OP. And shopping at Goodwill has what to do with it?

Isn't that where the newly unemployed people will be forced to shop if they don't find another job?

Is Target eliminating jobs? No. They simply aren't guaranteeing current jobs... people have to apply. If they're not useless tits (which is questionable with Zellers from my experience), they should get another job no problem.

Why is Zellers a failed model? Is it because of the advantages given to WalMart by short sighted municipalities and the failure to protect workers?

There are many features about WalMart that have been translated into the Canadian scene that have given them an unfair advantage over Zellers and others and there presence has not been a blessing.

In the US, the federal government pays more than $2.5 billion annually in welfare to employees of WalMart: making up for r remuneration that is, for many employees, less than subsistence.

It has been estimated that a Municipality that allows a WalMart receives one third less in taxes than it had from the businesses lost. Manufacturing is lost and jobs with it. Other corporations are forced to lower their employee wages in order to compete - remember Loblaws reducing wages by $4 per hour.

The whole WalMart concept is am abomination not an example of free enterprise. It is raw power with the collusion of government.

Perhaps you and a few million other Canadians should have shopped at a crappy store - crappy prices - crappy staff - Why they would have made a profit.

I take it of course that you and other like minded crave poor pricing - poor service - and dirty stores - no staff.

Too bad some members aren't part of that very group so they could confirm that they all felt that way, now they have the excuse they need to 'get a real job'. lol

My wife used to work for Zellers and Woolco (which eventually became Wal-Mart) too.

They treated her like crap so she moved on to something else.

Wasn't Fields the place Zellers shipped all it's crappy stuff to? They closed down so no surprise that the next domino goes also. Do Sears and the Bay then join up or be bought out?

Starting to take on the appearance of life in a Banana Republic after Delmonte was dealt a hand.

I'm assuming these are the ones being let go.

So you're wishing there were some members here who were Zellers employees being let go, so they could tell you they don't think they're useless tits? Well, I doubt they do think they are. But the whole system had broken down so badly, from the top down, that I don't blame Target for having zero interest in guaranteed hiring their workforce.

Location, Location
We have two Zellers in our city. One will become a Target. The other is a location that Target sold to Walmart, so it is closing in June, and will become a Walmart. Because it is closing, everythign is on sale, including shelving, fixtures, etc. I did a little comparison. At the other end of the mall is a 'No Frills' store (part of the Loblaws/SuperStore family).

I compared peanut butter, shampoo, swiffers, and a few other groceries. Same brand, same size package. With 10% off for closing, the peanut butter (1kg) was $0.10 cheaper. Everything else, even with the 10 to 30% off due to closing, was more expensive at Zellers. Compared to the store at the other end of a small mall.

Obviously, Zellers' business model does not work, hence its demise.

Well, no, they're ALL being let go. That's what happens when a business is sold and transformed, often everyone is let go, and they start from scratch. Employees of the former iteration usually have a first chance at the new jobs, but management is under no obligation to hire them all.

Let me stop this before it goes where it shouldn't. My comment was about them feeling positive about being let go and they take it as a good sign and one that is going to have a positive outcome, starting with a new and better job. I don't think one person let go feels that way if they are not sure they will have a job at all. For some it could be a move up the ladder, those ones aren't being canned though. Let's say the jobs are eliminated forever and there will just be fewer staff under the Target company (pick from a pallet rather than a shelf and you find it yourself). That is the people I would like to hear from, nothing to do with tits at all and you can meet a tit anyplace you go so Zellers doesn't have a monopoly them, I know cause some are on the road in front of me while Zellers is open. lol

Who said it's positive? It's reality. Nothing more, nothing less. Their business tanked because it's filthy, bad service, and overpriced. That happens.
