Alwaght- The parliament of the Iraqi Kurdistan region has approved a request by Masoud Barzani, the president of Iraq's Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG), to step down.
The approval came during a closed session on Sunday in the regional capital, Erbil.
The decision comes just over a month after a controversial secession referendum spearheaded by a defiant Barzani, which led to days of high tensions between Iraqi government and Kurdish militias, Peshmerga.
The veteran Kurdish leader and head of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) initially said he would step down after Iraqi Kurds went the polls on November 1.
But these elections have now been postponed by eight months, leaving it unclear what would happen to the presidency in the interim.
Meanwhile, irate demonstrators, some carrying clubs, stormed the parliament of the Iraqi Kurdistan Region as the Kurdish lawmakers approved a request by Barzani, to step down.
According to witnesses, protesters were angry at Barzani’s decision to resign from the presidency of the region.
Some reports indicated that gunshots were heard as protesters, who claimed they were Peshmerga Kurdish fighters forced their way into the parliament building.

The US has failed to back the Kurds, who were their close allies in the fight against ISIS terrorists, and has allowed Baghdad to use American weapons in its attack on Kurdistan, Masoud Barzani, the Iraqi Kurdish President, has said after resigning his post.



“Nobody stood up with us other than our mountains,” Barzani said in a televised address Sunday after the Kurdish parliament endorsed his resignation request.
He was referring to Baghdad’s military operation launched on October 16 following the Kurdish referendum. The vast majority had supported the region’s independence from Iraq in the September plebiscite.
The departing Kurdish leader denounced the US for abandoning the Kurds and allowing American Abrams tanks, which were supplied to Iraqi forces to fight Islamic State, to be deployed against them. “Without the help of Peshmerga(Kurdish fighters), Iraqi forces could not have liberated Mosul from ISIS (Islamic State, IS) alone,” he pointed out as cited by Reuters.
“Our people should now question, whether the US was aware of Iraq's attack and why they did not prevent it,” Barzani said.“Why would Washington want to punish Kurdistan?” he reflected in disbelief.
He then accused his Kurdish rivals of “high treason” for handing over the strategic oil-rich city of Kirkuk and surrounding areas to Iraqi forces without a fight. “We tried to stop bloodshed but the Iraqi forces and Popular Mobilization Front (Shia militias) kept advancing, using US weapons,” he said.
The veteran politician said further that Baghdad’s unwillingness to engage in dialogue showed that “Iraq no longer believes in Kurdish rights.” As for the September 25 referendum he had masterminded, Barzani said “three million votes for Kurdistan independence created history and cannot be erased.”
“I am the same Masoud Barzani, I am a Peshmerga (Kurdish fighter) and will continue to help my people in their struggle for independence,” he declared.
Earlier, the 71-year-old leader, who has lead the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) since its inception in 2005, sent a letter to parliament asking for his presidency not to be extended after November 1.
The MPs voted on the request in Erbil Sunday, with 70 voices supporting Barzani’s resignation and 23 voting against the move, Rudaw and Kurdistan 24 channels reported.

BEIRUT — Syrian state-run media said Thursday a rare U.S. strike on government-backed troops in eastern Syria killed and wounded dozens of tribal fighters, calling it a new effort “to support terrorism.”
The U.S.-led coalition said its action was in “self-defence,” citing a major attack on its allied forces and U.S. advisers in Deir el-Zour province by at least 500 fighters, battle tanks, howitzers and mortars.
The overnight attack, which a U.S. military official earlier said killed about 100 of the attackers, added another layer to the Syrian conflict that is once again plunging into a new and unpredictable spiral of violence.

The attack in Deir el-Zour province in northeastern Syria occurred in crowded battle space. A stronghold of Islamic State militants until late last year, the province also was the group’s main source of oil revenue. U.S.-backed Kurdish-led forces have been fighting for control of Deir el-Zour with rival Russian-backed Syrian troops that are reinforced by Iranian-supported militias.
The U.S.-backed forces control areas east of the Euphrates River and most of the oil and gas fields, while government forces are based in the west. Previous friction was reported before, but Wednesday’s incident appeared to be the largest since last year. The IS militants have been dispersed in the province, which also has a number of U.S. bases.
In an email Thursday to The Associated Press, Col. Thomas F. Veale said the coalition reported to the Russians the buildup of the pro-government forces in the area before the attack, and communicated with them during and after it. The Russian officials offered assurances that they would not engage the coalition forces in the area, Veale said.
“Pro-regime forces initiated hostilities with artillery pieces (howitzers). Additionally, Syrian pro-regime forces manoeuvred T-55 and T-72 main battle tanks with supporting mortar fire in what appears to be a co-ordinated attack on Syrian Democratic Forces approximately 8 kilometres (5 miles) east of the Euphrates River de-confliction line in Khusham, Syria,” Veale said.
By crossing the river, the pro-government forces would have violated the existing de-confliction agreement between Washington and Moscow, approaching U.S.-backed forces based near an oil field in the area. Russia is the main ally of Syrian President Bashar Assad.
Asked if Russia was responsible for not stopping the attack, Veale said: “The de-confliction effort has served its purpose. Just as the coalition does not direct the operations of the SDF, the Russians do not direct operations of the Syrian regime.”

Veale said they suspect the Syrian pro-government forces were trying to seize terrain from the U.S.-backed forces liberated from IS militants last year, including major oil fields in the area.
The Russian Defence Ministry said the U.S. airstrike wounded 25 pro-Syrian volunteers. It alleged that the incident showed that Washington was not interested in fighting Islamic militants but wanted “to seize and hold Syrian economic assets.”
Syria’s state media said the coalition bombed government-backed troops in Khusham, describing them as tribal fighters. The media cited reports of dozens killed and wounded.
The official state news agency SANA said the local fighters were battling IS militants and the U.S.-backed SDF in the area.
SANA labeled it an “aggression” and a “new massacre.” It later reported that 10 strikes by the coalition had caused “massive destruction.”
The head of the SDF unit in the area, Ahmed Abu Khawla, told AP the attackers were government-backed local militias known as the National Defence Forces. He said they started the attack near oil fields on the east side of the Euphrates.
“It was a little bit stronger than the usual clashes in the area. Everyone is back to their bases,” said Abu Khawla, the head of the Deir el-Zour Military Council. “It is now normal.”

In Beirut, an official with Hezbollah said the group has no presence in the area hit by the coalition, adding that those who came under fire were pro-Assad forces known as the Popular Committees, as well as the Syrian National Defence Forces. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to talk to the media.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which monitors the war, said Deir el-Zour province continues to be tense following the foiled attack and the U.S. response, and said there were reports of a new mobilization to the area.
The Observatory, which relies on a network of activists in Syria, said the Khusham area, near one of the province’s largest oil fields, saw intense clashes with heavy weaponry late Wednesday between pro-Assad forces and the SDF.
The clashes prompted the coalition response with land-to-land missiles and airstrikes, the Observatory said. It added that at least 45 pro-government troops, including Arab and Asian fighters, were killed.
Last summer, the coalition shot down Iranian-made armed drones and aircraft affiliated with the Syrian government in southern Syria, after they came dangerously close to U.S-backed forces and advisers.
The U.S. airstrike coincides with escalating violence in Syria.
Turkey, a NATO member, has been carrying out a military offensive to clear a U.S.-backed Kurdish militia from in a northwestern border town, increasing tensions between Washington and Ankara.
The Syrian government also has been pressing its campaign against a rebel-held area near the capital of Damascus. On Thursday, the Syrian Civil Defence, known as the White Helmets, said 35 people were killed in a number of towns in the eastern Ghouta area, which has been pummeled by a combination of artillery and airstrikes.
Activists have recorded at least 169 killed since Monday in eastern Ghouta.
Meanwhile, Turkish officials said the leaders of Turkey, Russia and Iran will meet in Istanbul to discuss peace efforts for Syria.
The officials said that Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Russian President Vladimir Putin agreed to the summit in a telephone call Thursday. It was not immediately clear when the Istanbul meeting would take place.
The Turkish officials said the two also agreed that efforts to create “observation posts” in Syria’s Idlib province as part of a de-escalation agreement among Turkey, Russia and Iran should gain momentum. Turkey already has deployed troops in Idlib to such posts, and some of its soldiers have come under attack.
They also discussed the humanitarian situation in the Ghouta region.
The officials provided the information on condition of anonymity in line with government rules.

This was a confirmation of the statement by Alireza Tangsiri, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard’s navy chief, saying the same. Iran has confirmed that any number of friendly and neutral states will continue to have full commercial access to the strategic water-way. China has confirmed its support for today’s major move on the part of the Islamic Republic of Iran.
The strait will now be a part of a strategic co-prosperity zone for Axis of Resistance countries, as well as increasingly neutral states including other Gulf Monarchies, like Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain, Oman, and the United Arab Emirates, who are now in a process of pushing out of Saudi-Israeli interference and control. The orientation of these states had begun to shift dramatically in the 2016-17 period, when the success of Iran and Russia in the Syrian war became evident.

Iran had been conducting a series of ‘drills’ and ‘military exercises’ since mid-June, in the strait, when apparently the ‘drill went live’, and Iran declared full military control of the Gulf and Strait of Hormuz. This is a major event, the significance of which has already sent a strong and stabilizing message around the world.
The official IRNA news agency said the start of major drill in the lead-up to today’s major event, occurred on Sunday June 17th, and included an Iranian warship and two *Chinese destroyers, a logistics ship and one helicopter. The Chinese flotilla ‘went to Oman’ after the naval exercise, state-run Xinhua also confirmed in their report. Iran has confirmed that Oman will continue to have access, despite pressures from Saudi Arabia and Israeli. The Chinese flotilla is still stationed in Oman, and in connection with this, are the official reports dating back to May that China and Oman have entered into a military-strategic partnership.

US National Security Adviser John Bolton reportedly warned that Washington was ready for military action against Syria if Damascus uses chemical weapons.

Syrian air defense forces were placed on full alert amid concerns about a possible US strike against the country, Al Masdar News reported, citing local media sources.
A source at the Mezzeh Air Base claimed that the troops stationed at the facility were ordered to prepare for a possible attack against Damascus.
While the exact reason for this move wasn’t revealed, "it is believed to be due to the potential threat of a US strike on the capital or its surrounding area," the news agency added.
The Syrian government however hasn't yet commented on these reports.

Earlier, the Ministry announced that the United States, the United Kingdom and France were preparing to carry out new strikes against Syria under the pretext of a false chemical weapons attack by Syrian government forces.

"The United States keeps building up the group of cruise missile carriers in the Middle East region, connected with the preparation of a regular provocation with an alleged 'use of chemical weapons' in the province of Idlib," Konashenkov said.
According to the Russian Defense Ministry, the US destroyer may strike any part of Syria from the Mediterranean.

Truce Reached after Deadly Clashes in Libyan Capital

A truce has been reached after deadly clashes erupted between rival militias in Tripoli, a security source said Tuesday as residents reported calm had returned to Libyan capital.
Five people were killed and 33 wounded on Monday, the health ministry said, as two factions faced off with tanks and pickup trucks mounted with machine guns.
After explosions and gunfire rocked Tripoli's suburbs, a truce was reached on Monday evening according to a source from the security services.
Negotiations were due to take place on Tuesday aimed at achieving a lasting ceasefire, the source added.
A resident of the Ain Zara neighbourhood in south-east Tripoli confirmed calm had returned to the area.
Other residents in the Salaheddin and Khallet al-Ferjan neighbourhoods, in southern Tripoli, said the fighting had ended although some roads remained closed to traffic.
The clashes involved two rival groups linked to the UN-backed Government of National Accord (GNA), according to security sources.
Interior Minister Abdessalam Ashour said the fighting pitted the so-called 7th Brigade -- a militia from the town of Tarhuna southeast of Tripoli -- against security forces.

IS Claims Deadly Libya Checkpoint Attack
The Islamic State group has claimed responsibility for a deadly attack earlier this week on a checkpoint in western Libya, as Libyan authorities announced the arrest of the suspected perpetrators.
"Soldiers of the caliphate assaulted the 'Wadi Kaam' gate, on the Zliten-Khoms road two days ago, targeting a gathering of apostate security elements" loyal to Libya's U.N.-backed unity government, the jihadist group said via its Amaq propaganda arm.
Six soldiers loyal the Government of National Accord (GNA) were killed in the Thursday attack, illustrative of the insecurity that has plagued the country since a 2011 uprising.
Zliten Mayor Moftah Ahmadi told AFP the assault in the town, which lies 170 kilometres (105 miles) from the capital in an area where IS jihadists are active, targeted special operations forces commanded by the interior ministry.
Three men, "armed with grenades and light weapons" led the attack, Ahmadi said. One was shot dead and the other two managed to escape.
In an interview Saturday with Libya's private al-Ahrar broadcaster, the unity government's Interior Minister Abdelsalam Ashour said "the perpetrators of the attack were apprehended", without specifying how many people were arrested.

Syria Ready to Take One Million Returning Refugees, Says Moscow
Russia's defence minister said on Tuesday that war-torn Syria would be ready to accept one million returning refugees, following Moscow-backed reconstruction work.
"Since 2015, when towns and villages gradually started to be freed, more than one million people have returned home," Sergei Shoigu said in comments reported by Russian news agencies.
"Now every opportunity has been created for the return of roughly one million (more) refugees," he told journalists.
"Huge infrastructure reconstruction work is ongoing, the rebuilding of transport routes and security points so that Syria can begin accepting refugees."

Iranian Intelligence Minister Mahmoud Alavi said on Tuesday that security forces had arrested "tens of spies" working in different branches of the Iranian government, according to the Iranian Students News Agency (ISNA), a semi-official media publication in the country.

The intelligence minister did not say which countries the spies were working for nor when they were arrested, but only that many of them were dual citizens of Iran and other states.
"I have repeatedly asked people to inform us if they know any dual national. The Intelligence Ministry's anti-espionage unit has successfully identified and arrested tens of spies in different governmental bodies," ISNA quotes the minister as saying.
Maryam Rajavi, leader of the People's Mujahedin of Iran (MEK), a former US-designated terrorist organization which now enjoys deep ties to the US State Department and White House, called on Saturday for Western countries to expell "the regime's spies and mercenaries" which she argued take "advantage of diplomatic resources to promote state-sponsored terrorism."

The US military is creating a strike force to carry out an attack on government forces in Syria, which is to be justified by a staged chemical attack in the province of Idlib, the Russian military says.
Besides the already noted deployment of the USS The Sullivans to the Persian Gulf and the rebasing of a B-1B Lancer strategic bomber to an air base in Qatar, the missile destroyer USS Ross carrying 28 Tomahawk cruise missiles entered the Mediterranean. Thus, the US could launch at least 84 Tomahawk cruise missiles and 24 AGM-158 joint air to surface stand-off missiles (JASSM) if it were to decide to strike the war-torn country right now.
According to Russian military spokesman Maj. Gen. Igor Konashenkov, “these preparations are fresh confirmation of US intentions to use as a pretext a likely simulation of the government forces’ chemical attack, which Hayat Tahrir al-Sham [formerly Jabhat al-Nusra, the Syrian branch of al-Qaeda] militants are plotting with active support from British secret services.”
Reports are appearing that the Syrian Air Defense Forces (SADF) have already started preparing to repel an expected US-led missile strike by deploying additional specialists and air defense systems near the crucial objects of the infrastructure, which they expect may be targeted.

I felt I set the tone early with "CIA decided regime change for syria", imo the white helmets are u.s. stage hands that orchestrated faux syrian attacks for cnn consumption and provided hawks an excuse to hang around syria. I see no reason whatsoever why this scenario will not again unfold in idlib.

At least two pro-government forces were killed overnight in a string of explosions at a military airport near the Syrian capital, a monitoring group said on Sunday.
Syrian state media also reported the blasts at the Mazzeh airbase, on the western outskirts of Damascus, but did not mention any casualties.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights war monitor said Mazzeh was hit by a "possible Israeli missile, which hit a munitions store setting off successive explosions".
"It left two pro-regime fighters dead and wounded another 11, some of them in critical condition," said Observatory chief Rami Abdel Rahman.
He could not specify their nationalities or whether they belonged to militias or government forces.
An Israeli military spokeswoman declined to comment on Sunday.
AFP's correspondents in Damascus heard multiple blasts overnight, one of which lit up the sky in a deep red hue, but reported calm on Sunday morning.
A Syrian military source said the Mazzeh airbase "was not the target of Israeli aggression," according to the official SANA news agency.
"The explosions heard were due to an explosion at a munitions deposit close to the airport which was due to an electrical short circuit," the source said, without mentioning any casualties.
The Mazzeh airbase houses Syrian Air Force intelligence, and in early 2017 the Syrian government accused its neighbor Israel of bombing the base.
Israel has sought to avoid direct involvement in the conflict but acknowledges carrying out dozens of air strikes in Syria to stop what it says are deliveries of advanced weaponry to Lebanon's Hizbullah.
