Two married Tulsa police officers are being held in jail in connection with the alleged murder of their daughter's boyfriend, officials said on Thursday.
Shannon Kepler, 54, is in the Tulsa County jail accused of first degree murder in the fatal shooting of Jeremy Lake, the 19-year-old boyfriend of the Keplers' daughter, Lisa Kepler, according to police and jail records.
His wife, Gina Kepler, 48, is being held as an accessory after the fact.
"This is absolutely unfortunate and we are sad for the family of the victim and the Keplers," public information officer Jillian Roberson of the Tulsa Police Department said on Thursday. "It's a very hard case for us but we are treating it just like any other homicide investigation."
The Keplers joined the police department on the same day in 1990, Roberson said. Shannon Kepler works in the police academy and is a former patrol officer, Roberson said. Gina Kepler is a patrol officer, Roberson said.
Shannon Kepler got into a discussion with his daughter outside of his vehicle late on Tuesday night and then Lake stepped up introduce himself, according to a police affidavit.
He then shot Lake two or three times, fled in his vehicle and later turned himself in, the affidavit said.
The Keplers are scheduled to appear in court on Aug. 12. Their lawyer could not immediately be reached for comment.

An Ohio woman says the father of her two young children was shot dead by police in a Walmart because he picked up a toy gun.
LeeCee Johnson of Fairfield told the Dayton Daily News she was on the phone with John Crawford, 22, when he was killed Tuesday night.
"He said he was at the video games playing videos and he went over there by the toy section where the toy guns were. And the next thing I know, he said, 'It's not real,' and the police start shooting and they said 'Get on the ground,' but he was already on the ground because they had shot him," Johnson told the newspaper.
"I feel like they shot him down like he was not even human."
Crawford's brother said the family has contacted civil rights organizations. Crawford was black.
Beavercreek Police and the Ohio Attorney General's Office declined to comment because the investigation is ongoing.

It's time for the citizenry to be fully armed!
Funny, when Heinlein was in the Navy, he was on a destroyer (four-inch guns). But when he was a civilian, all he ever owned was a couple of pistols and rifles. So I guess he didn't even follow his own advice.

White guy starts fight, black guy gets pepper sprayed
In fairness to the good folk of the Seattle PD, this was not a cop. It was a "security guard." Such rent-a-cops are almost never trained as well as the police, and a pretty good proportion of them are security guards because they do not qualify to be police officers.

San Jose police fatally shoot woman holding power drill

A 19-year-old woman brandishing a power drill was shot dead by a police officer in San Jose on Thursday, police said.
Police received a report that morning that a woman was threatening to kill her family with an Uzi assault weapon, San Jose Police spokeswoman Heather Randol said in a news release.
When they arrived at the family's home, they saw the woman outside, holding what they thought was a weapon, Randol said.
Officers asked her to drop it, but she did not, pointing it at them instead, Randol said. One of the officers, Wakana Okuma, shot the woman, who was taken to a local hospital and pronounced dead.
Randol said Okuma, who has been placed on administrative leave, "feared for her safety and the safety of the public" when she shot the woman.
Officers later realized the woman had been holding a cordless drill that was painted black, Randol said.
The Santa Clara County coroner's office declined to release the woman's name or provide any details about her death or condition.
The shooting is being investigated by San Jose homicide detectives, Randol said.

Florida police fatally shoot innocent bystander during bar altercation

ORLANDO, Fla. - An innocent bystander was shot and killed by a stray police bullet during a confrontation with a man carrying a gun at the entrance of a bar, Orlando police officials said on Tuesday.
Maria Godinez, 22, died early Tuesday morning after multiple gunshots were fired as three police officers tried to stop the man from entering the Vixen Bar in downtown Orlando, authorities said.
"The Orlando Police Department is committed to a full investigation to understand how this tragedy happened," Orlando Police Chief John Mina told reporters.
Police also shot the armed suspect, Kodi Roach, who was treated for multiple wounds at a hospital, Mina said.
Roach did not appear to have fired his weapon, Mina said.
One of the officers, Lt. Frank Nunez, was shot in the leg.
Roach was in stable condition at a hospital, facing charges of carrying a concealed firearm. He could be charged later with felony murder, because someone was killed as he committed a crime, Mina said.
The wounded officer, Nunez, was treated at a hospital and released.
Two other officers involved, Eduardo Sanguino and Jeff Angel, have been placed on paid administrative leave as the Florida Department of Law Enforcement investigates, Mina said.
He said preliminary reports showed that a bullet from Sanguino's firearm struck the woman.
A witness working across the street from the bar described the altercation in a Facebook post.
"I see this guy thrown out of the club and the door slammed in his face. He proceeds to bang on the door of the club using his gun," Kane Lee wrote.
Two officers then arrived on bicycles, according to Lee.
"We shouted out to them that he had a gun and they flew off their bikes and told him 10 times to get on the ground and he wouldn't so they tased him but he still stood there and then this man reached for his gun and as soon as he did, the cops shot him till he fell," Lee wrote.

A Maryland State Police trooper has been suspended without pay after sheriff's deputies responded to a call reporting a naked man drinking at a bar in a barbecue restaurant, authorities said on Wednesday.
The incident is the most recent in a spate involving naked people around the country.
Harford County sheriff's deputies arrived around 11 p.m. on Saturday at the bar in Jarrettsville, 32 miles north of Baltimore, and located two men who identified themselves as state troopers. The trooper in question appeared intoxicated and denied that he had been naked, sheriff's deputy spokeswoman Christie Kahler said.
Customers told deputies one of the troopers had pulled off his pants and at one point exposed himself, according to the report. Neither man was charged.
After an internal investigation by the Maryland State Police, one trooper was suspended without pay, state police spokeswoman Elena Russo said.
Neither of the men's names were released.
The incident is under further investigation by the Maryland State Police and the Maryland District Attorney's Office.
In Arlington, Virginia, Roland Hitchens, 42, was naked and intoxicated when he struck two vehicles and wrecked his motorcycle before fleeing into the woods Friday night around 9:30 p.m., police said.
Police located Hitchens not far from the scene in the suburb of Washington, D.C., and he was taken to a local hospital and treated for minor injuries.
Hitchens faces several charges including felony hit and run, indecent exposure, drunken driving, unauthorized use of a motor vehicle and driving with a revoked license.
Elsewhere in the United States, there appears to be an uptick in crimes committed by nude people, according to media reports.
Police arrested a screaming naked man with a 4-foot sword outside a housing complex Saturday in Jacksonville, Florida, according to several news reports.
In Northern California, an impaired man crashed his truck Sunday and promptly got out of the vehicle and disrobed, California Highway Patrol said.
Witnesses told police Alexander Jon Leonard, 25, was running around naked in traffic, blocking the Bay Area freeway. Leonard resisted arrest and police were forced to use a Taser on him.
He was later arrested for suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs and resisting arrest.
Last week, a Chicago-area man was arrested when he attempted to rob a bank naked.

Wyoming officer charged over death of police dog in hot car
Reuters

A Wyoming police officer has pleaded not guilty to animal cruelty charges tied to the death of a dog left inside a sweltering patrol car for more than six hours, local media reported.
Mills Police Department Officer Zachary Miller entered his plea on Friday, a month after drug-sniffing police dog "Nyx" died, the Casper Star Tribune reported.
Citing court filings, the paper reported that Miller left Nyx in his patrol car, parked outside the police station, with the windows rolled up.
Police dogs are prohibited from the Mills police station, the paper said.
If convicted of the misdemeanor charges, Miller faces up to six months in jail and a fine of $750, the paper reported.
Calls to the Natrona County District Attorney's Office, which is prosecuting the case, were not immediately returned on Saturday.

Man charged with murder after cops shoot bystander

ORLANDO, Fla. – A Florida man was charged with murder on Tuesday in connection with a woman's death at an Orlando bar last week - even though a police officer fired the bullet that killed her, law enforcement officials said.
Police said the actions of Kody Roach, 23, resulted in the bystander's death on Aug. 19 from the stray shot and warranted a first-degree felony murder charge.
Under Florida law, a person can be charged with murder if a death occurs while a crime is being committed.
Roach was also arrested on charges of attempted armed burglary and armed trespassing of an occupied building and carrying a concealed weapon.
Maria Godinez, 22, died after officers were called to an Orlando bar, which had thrown out Roach for being armed and drunk. Roach then banged on the door with a gun trying to get back in, police said.
An officer fired at Roach nine times after unsuccessful attempts to subdue him, Orlando Police Chief John Mina said last week.
One of the bullets missed Roach and instead struck and killed Godinez, who was inside the bar with her friends.
Roach was hit five times, and another police officer on the scene was struck by a bullet that investigators believe ricocheted, according to an arrest affidavit.
Roach remained hospitalized for his wounds from the shooting, which is being investigated.

Cop fatally shoots "Cops" crew member during robbery

A suspect was shot dead and a crew member with the “Cops” television show later died after the apparent disruption of a robbery Tuesday night at a Wendy’s restaurant in midtown Omaha, police said Wednesday morning.

More than 30 shots were fired, officials said. The fatal shots apparently were fired by an Omaha police officer. Officials said it appears the only shots fired came from police.

Officials said the robbery suspect apparently had an Airsoft gun, a type of gun that often looks like an actual firearm.

The victim was described as the crew member who holds the microphone. He was taken from the scene in extremely critical condition.

The robbery suspect was a parolee from Kansas, law enforcement sources said.

Police will hold a 2:30 p.m. press conference to release more details on the shooting. Stay with Omaha.com for live video and updates from the press conference.

Officer discovers robbery in progress

The shootings occurred when an officer discovered a man, wearing a dark hooded sweatshirt and white bandanna, robbing the restaurant, Deputy Police Chief Dave Baker said.

The first officer at the scene called for backup at about 9:20 p.m. Then, shots rang out. The injured "Cops" crew member was taken from the scene in critical condition.

The east-facing windows of the Wendy’s were riddled with bullet holes, and Dodge Street was closed between 42nd and 45th Streets for hours.

High-ranking police officials and a representative of the Mayor’s Office were at the scene near 42nd and Dodge Streets on Tuesday night.

Ian Stanley, 24, a midtown Dodge Street Wendy’s employee who reported to work Wednesday at 7:30 a.m., said police told him that the fast-food restaurant “wouldn’t be open today because it’s a crime scene.’’
