How can language bother you that much? Institutions are english, business is english. Who cares if Chinese people want to speak cantonese or mandarin between each other?

When I started a business a few years ago, I went to downtown Vancouver and the man at the counter of the govt business centre was from China and could not speak proper English to me. I was wasting time and money and pissed off. The govt is sometimes goes too far to accomodate non-English speakers. I think it makes the govt feel "global". Which is done at the public's expense. It is so much BS.

talking with humans these days is rare - face to face I mean.

If you're not talking to people, make a goal out of it... get out of the house, and meet people for coffee. Because seriously, I see at least 4 friends a week for coffee, many of them repeatedly. Walks, workouts, chatting with folks in the neighbourhood... if you're not leaving the house, you'd better push yourself and start or you go insane.

You can google something that is a completely innocent topic and wind up with a page full of porno.

sweet! lol. But in all seriousness, just click 'safe search' and you shouldn't have that issue.

Northern Ontario,
Post# 49;-)

In '75 while working in Rigaud Que. I was driving a company official to Mirrabel since he was going home to Britain for the Christmas holidays. Since we were a bit early for his flight, we turned into one of those roadside restaurants.
As we walked into the restaurant speaking english of course and sitting at a table...I overheard one waitress tell the other in french "Des ***** anglais, I understand english, but they will have to speak french if they want anything served"
The man wanted something light before his flight and I just wanted coffee to stay awake since I'd had a long day.....so when he ordered, she responded (in french)"Speak french please, I don't understand english...
That's when I told her (In french)What part of toasted tomato sandwitch and two coffees didn't you understand?) and finished of with a "Tabarnak".
She turned around in a flash and brought us our order post-haste.
When it came time to pay the bill $3.95 (remember that was 1975;-)) the man was gonna drop a fiver on the table....when I told him...In Ontario, we pay for the food and tip for the service...
He to back his five and put the exact amount of the bill on the table....
If the look that waitress gave me could have killed:lol:

As you can see I have seen both sides of this language foolishness and one side is no better than the other...

Well, in my experience and observation, first generation immigrants may have trouble with their English but second generation speak English as well as anyone. I work with a very multicultural group and there certainly is not any language barriers.

A few times when I've called Bell, I've come upon an accent I had a hard time understanding, and had to have them repeat things to me, but I don't hear those accents often enough up north to become familiar with them like someone living in Toronto

That's due to Bell outsourcing call center jobs to various countries.

First generation immigrants, I think you mean from another country, they will have some language problems in Canada because the English they learn is quite different from the English spoken here. English in other countriies is called HInglish, Japlish, Chinglish, and Konglish from Indian, Japan, China and Korea because they have grammar and vocabulary issues upon landing here. In Hong Kong, everyone lives in an apartment, they have single dwelling houses, so no back yards or basements. Even from Quebec, when French language movies are shown in France, they require subtitles. Just like movies made from French speaking African countries.

Once immigrants come here they learn, and their kids are much better. Generally, immigration is good, but its a big high these days.

Have you met my son and my sister-in-law??? My son sends me sites for getting out and exercising and doing pottery etc.
My sister-in-law (one of them) lives in Calgary. She lives alone, never leaves her house and many would label her as at least near insane.
I do get out but I don't visit enough or spend enough time with adults. I still look after our 5 grandchildren but now that school is back in, I do have most of the day to myself. Really to myself. My husband works every shift but day shift. End of January he's cutting that in half so that we can start to have a life.

Sweet alright. Then the kids come in from school and use my computer! I can see it now - "Look what Gramma's been doing today". They know their way around the computer better than I do. I was just comparing TV and Computers. I don't think TV is quite the devil that Cliff sees it as.

You know what really bugs me? Some of my neighbors are Korean. When I walk down the street, I can smell the food they're cooking, and I don't like it. Really, I find that offensive. I think that if they want to come here, they should make the effort to cook food that smells like ours.

I made Indian food last night... our kids were all outside playing with the neighbour kids, hubby was out in the garage working, and as soon as I kicked the vent hood on, that back door was popping open with people wondering what on earth I was making and could they please have some, NOW. lol.
