Ethnic as in Soviet?

When the USSR crashed Ukraine got to keep the energy intensive industry in Eastern Ukraine. Russian bosses and workers had a choice. F-ck off and cross the border or stay and be a nobody lucky enough to have a job in foreign country. There is nothing ethnic about a Soviet.

No, as it Russian ethnically, but legally Ukrainian citizens. Like someone who is ethnically English but legally Canadian or ethnically French but legally Canadian.

The USSR does not exist. They were ethnically Russian and legally Ukrainian. They therefore had the right to vote in Ukrainian elections. Some regions were predominantly Russian, like Crimea. Russia was wrong in invading, but the student protestors failed to understand the ethnic complexity of their own state just as western politicians had.

It didn't exist? There never were "Russian regions" of Ukraine prior to the USSR.
