Fonyo COMPLETED the coast-to-coast run on one leg TWICE.

Dead or alive, who deserves a recognition? Obviously the guy with the proper Anglo-Saxon name.

Terry Fox DIED of cancer before he could finish his run. Fonyo OTH is just another drunken bum seeking glory.

If you were one who accomplished something that the One before you never did; if you were someone that got nothing but a back-handed slap in the face from the entire Nation, hung up on The One; If you were an unappreciated nobody, in spite of your accomplishment, would you not be tempted to turn to the bottle?

Terry Fox surely deserves the monument in his honour.

But just a word of acknowledgement, a word of appreciation not due to Steve Fonyo? Is he really nothing more than a "drunken bum"?

taxslave, congratulations on discovering the capabilities of the "EDIT" feature. Or someone far better than you could ever hope to be edited your post for you.

Be that as it may, you called me a "stupid twit".

In the spirit of magnanimousness, I forgive you.

Canada does not have market nor the money to produce films on the scale of what comes out of Hollywood regardless of perceived quality of it. Face it, there isn't millions to be made in Canada peddling Anne of Green Gables and Trailer Park Boys movies.

Fact is, "Red haired Anne" is very very popular in Japan, Korea and China. A market of over one billion people. Yet how many Anne of Green Gables shows are being made? Not enough. No money in Canadian movies, don't make me laugh.

When I was in Korea and taught Korean adults, we talked how movies from everywhere except the US were so boring, so cultured other countries couldn't give a rat's ass about them. Then a student said to me, "You speak English, the whole world is learning English, not Korean."

We speak the language the world is learning so we can make movies they will watch. This is about Canadian sovereignty, which we wish not to exercise.

I worked as an extra in a bad movie made in Campbell River a few years ago. Paid us minimum wage & lunch. Found out at the end extras are considered self employed and there for no EI or CPP credits. Funny how no other industry can do this. I doubt the money they left behind covered the costs for others like commercial trucks that were inconvenienced by having the main highway closed for three weeks but these costs are not spoken of by the promoters nor are these companies compensated for the extra costs.

This is an outrage. We have a deficit for some reason. Business gets too many subsidies. The movie industry is big business and they need BC taxpayer money to make profits? I doubt it. Just to fatten their profits.

All right, you upside down, messed up idiotic baby, tell me this:

If Fonyo had died and Fox completed the coast-to-coast run TWICE and Fox were given the same cold shoulder, would you blame Fox to seek solace in a bottle?

We don't know, of course. Perhaps Terry Fox would have been a stronger human being than Steve Fonyo. But dismissing Steve as a drunk is not a reflection on him, it is a reflection on YOU and PUNKS like you.

I believe Canada should be offering the porno business tax credits. Specifically, XXX of the German and Japanese variety. We could also offer up the Governor Generals mansions for use and use MP's as extras or fluffers.

Quote dumpthemonarchy:
It is time to phase out tax credits to finance Hollywood films. Why make Hollywood ricer and stifle our own movie industry? Really, we're just wetbacks to Hollywood. I met a guy last week who made $30 hr plus pushing a chair cart around. I shouldn't be subsidizing this.

Sure is tough to find a current article on this topic and they never discuss actual dollars spent by taxpayers. A total ripoff!!
Unquote.
ricer?

No, it is not time we phased out tax credits to Canada's film industries.
Dumb idea.

Be it a Hollywood flick, a Bollywood flic, an Idie, or a Euro being partially location shot in Canada or a standalone homegrown effort Canada's film industry needs all the help it can get.

Tax credits mean the Canadian film business is just paying slightly less tax than some other Canadian corporations.
It's no gift.
It just means they pay a little bit less to Big Brother.
I figure Oil companies, Booze distillers, Cigarette manufactures, Payday loan companies and the like SHOULD pay a little more tax than a small, homegrown film industry.

The film industry is fairly environmentally ethical and low impact.
On occasion the films themselves encourage people to think for themselves.
See the Indian flic Water or Cohen Bros films as an example.

So why not encourage the film industry in Canada?
And it's not at all about subsidizing Hollywood flics over Canadian content.

But it definitely is all about developing Canadian skills and film infrastructure.
Canadian talent and opportunities.

Who cares where the film development monies come from?
Hollywood or Europe?
Spend it in Canada, I say.
We can use every location shoot we can get.
Money, after all, is sticky.

So dumpthemonarchy has a very poorly thought out complaint on this topic the way I see it.

A drunk is a drunk is a drunk.

Maybe if he wasn't an asshole he'd have been appreciated. It is not what you do in life that is important. It is how you handled yourself while you did it.

Maybe that is why you expect so much?
