If Trump imposes tariffs on Canada, I hope Canada does not retaliate at all since that will only hurt us more.

If we absolutely insist on retaliating, then maybe we could impose an export tariff of $X.XX/kg or $X.XX/Kw as the least harmful form of retaliation if we need an emotional release to feel good about how we fought back. If we can keep a cool head on our shoulders though, then the best thing we could do is to not retaliate. If the US reduces imports through import tariffs, then that will force the US dollar up relative to other currencies. Then what? Will he just raise the tariffs even more? He could keep doing that until he tariffs the US into a corner once US products just become too expensive for the world to buy.

Unfortunately, I'm not confident that Canadians can keep a cool head in all of this.

Rolling over and playing dead likely will not work out in our favour at this point in history. There is a deranged lunatic in the White House.

We need to get rid of the crap we get from China - it's poorly made and doesn't last. Hubby was a maintenance technician and when he had to re-do pipes and fittings, anything the company bought that was from China crapped out (pardon the pun) within weeks; anything made in Canada or the US lasted for years!! He said it was becoming harder to get the better products because China had pretty much taken over with their crap and American companies were closing down because they couldn't compete. So Trump does have a point insofar as "dumping" is concerned and Canada needs to take is seriously.

Do we have to retaliate? I say just quit buying their products!

It will still be cheaper to build in China and sell in the US. This is more like a tax scheme to cover income tax cuts.
