It's more likely that a cabin (usually not built to any code, often pieced together with cheap, outdated building materials, and often not containing smoke detectors) burned down due to wiring issues or faulty heaters, than it is that a man killed all of his essentially adult children.

I wonder what I would do if try as I might I couldn't get my family out of a burning cabin. Anyone ever been choked out by smoke before? I would say that under normal circumstances, it does seem strange, but these are obviously not normal circumstances. I won't jump to any conclusions based on the limited info.

That was my first thought too but then I found out who was in the cabin. If it was just his rich wife, it would be highly suspicious, but it was his kids and family friend too. It's odd but I'll be surprised if it was foul.

Would it be more believable if he stood and peed in the fire's direction? He's in the boonies - and I mean boonies - No phone, no cell tower, car on the other side of a lake - and he's in full bloody panic. What would you be doing? Only then can you say what you're smelling.

You're likely right. I suspect he knew everyone was already dead and was in shock even before he got into the boat.
