Thank you ... that's probably it. The centre of focus may have been changed ... I'll check the settings and manual. I'm not much of a manual reader ... but I'll figure it out.

I was reading today that noise can be caused by exposure problems.

You have a real talent Durka. Do you have a site for all these or is it just the thread?

edit.. nm.. I've been missing the flickr links while being in awe of your shots.

I took this photo of a hawk this afternoon ... the noise destroys the photo. Any suggestions?

Does anyone slow down to offer him a twoonie? Great shot ... I sometimes wonder how you get away with taking shots like that without people hiding ... you must be very subtle.

Ariadne, looks like you have the ISO cranked, try lowering it to somewhere between 100 and 400. Are you shooting in auto mode?

I gave him a couple bucks.... I'm not really subtle, I generally just aim and shoot. He wasn't even noticing my camera.

I think the ISO is cranked too. I let someone fool around with my camera one day ... and now I can't quite get it right. I think its set to 1600 ... Canon 30D ... probably similar to the 60 ... do you know which button I hit and what I'm looking for in the view finder to lower that? It's definitely in auto mode, and I used to have much cleaner photos.

I usually get caught before I can take the shot ... perhaps my intentions are written all over my face before I can put my finger on the button.

Look on the top of your camera, you should see a button on the far right labelled "ISO", press it once then turn the thumb wheel to the left, located in the upper right corner. Turn it until you see 100.

Just a suggestion, don't shoot auto mode, it makes a mess of photos.

If I were you, I would set the camera to aperture priority mode (AV). That way you can lock the aperture at lets say F2.8 and then the camera will figure out the shutter speed needed. To do this, turn the wheel on the far left until it's pointed to "Av". Then, Turn the right thumb wheel to the aperture desires (f2.8, F4 etc). You'll get a lot better photos this way.

Thank you! I've been looking at that, and then turning the little wheel that's next to the small buttons ... not thinking about the thumb wheel. I'm pretty dumb about some stuff ... I really appreciate it. I've made the changes and will wait for the hawks to come out tomorrow afternoon again. Hopefully they'll come close again.

Now I've got the timer going! Sheesh ... could you perhaps help me turn that off too?

Test it out on a random object tomorrow and see if the noise is reduced, before shooting the hawk.

Are there a lot of down and out people in Toronto?

You should compile a book ... fundraiser with donation to the homeless shelter.

Like any city, ya, there is a lot of down and out people.

A book is a great idea but I would have to get model release from every person if I wanted to sell them commercially, even if it's for charity.

Quite true. Someone did something like that here and did get releases from people in the photos. Some of the people in the images were then profiled in the evening news. It did a lot to raise awareness of the stories behind the homeless people ... I think the book was picked up by a local museum as part of an insight into the city ... probably buried deep in the city archives today.
