The Trumpublicans have announced that they will push a plan to require proof of citizenship for voter registration.

Here's the part I needed you to relax for. . . I agree with this. I don't think it's nearly as big a problem as they like to pretend it is, but citizenship is a requirement for voting. Requiring you to prove it to register to vote is just good administration.

Their stated reason is that several million people, mostly poor and non-White, do not have the documents (birth certificate or passport) to prove their citizenship. That's why the Trumpublicans are pushing this. They don't give a fuck whether they're citizens or not. They just crunched the numbers and concluded that this push will deny more people who would vote Democratic the vote than Republican. Same reason they accept a state-issued photo-ID concealed carry permit as ID for voting in Tex-ass, but don't accept a state-issued photo ID student ID from a Texas university.

Maybe because you must be a citizen to obtain a photo ID concealed carry permit and you do not to obtain student ID .
I would expect that most citizens can obtain proof of such without much effort or cost through local government offices . That is certainly the case in Canada .

OK, quick tutorial.

1. One need not be a citizen of the United States to obtain a Texas concealed carry permit.

2. The photo ID is for voting. When one is voting, one produces ID only for the purpose of verifying that the person is who he/she/whatever says he/she/whatever is. One proves one's citizenship at registration, which is a separate process from voting.

A water bill and a sworn declaration will get you a ballot in Canada or someone can vouch for you.

The same is true in some states. Not so in others. They require either a birth certificate, a passport (which you can't get without a birth certificate) or a judicial order.

There's the Federal Elections Commission, but it's a Federal/state mix. The Federal Constitution sets the age (18), Federal law requires citizenship to vote in elections for Federal offices (Congress and the Presidency), but procedures are mostly in the control of the states: polling places, early voting, voting by mail, ID requirements, etc.

Technically, ALL elections are state elections. No House of Representatives district crosses state lines, Senators represent the states, and when one votes for President, one is voting for electors of the Electoral College, not directly for President. That's how a candidate can get fewer popular votes and end up as President.

On the whole, I actually do agree with you. There should be some proof that people are who they claim to be.

But I do know people in the US who never got their birth certificates, or they got fucked up somehow and now don't match the person. IF there could be a different way to legally register people for voting without needing the birth certs, it'd likely be better for everyone.

But yeah, at this point, all the old excuses for the reasons not to have the ID don't matter anymore, not when you've got the MAGA-clans demanding proof of ALL people who vote.

A university student does not have to be a resident. Probably couldn’t buy a gun with student ID even in Texas.
the way the loser left has it figured, the US might as well have ballot boxes in Mexico City.
