The version of the story I heard, the teacher called a vote,to see who wanted to see the video, and the kids were 100% yes.
They'er in grade ten for christ sake.Nothing to see, move along folks.
I had a teacher in little school that came in covered in blood {deer},smoked in school and when you got the strap, you held your hand three inches from the desk so you got it on both sides.Hell of a guy,I don't think anybody he taught ever spent a minute in therapy.
We'er fn doomed.

In my opinion, the teacher showed a complete lack of judgement in this. There is no way that kids (or anyone) should be shown a 'snuff flick'. If the teacher can't comprehend this, they need to be in a mental hospital.

Vote or not, it was the putting it up for vote in the first place where the teacher erred in judgement.

And you were probably glad to move up from the caves.

I'm torn here...

It's news.

Grade 10 kids have internet access in all manner of places.

They voted to see it, that's democracy.

If the kids went home and looked it up online, they could be doing it without the benefit of a teacher or adult to put it in context or help them discuss the video and its impact on the Canadian psyche.

On the other hand, they are just kids. I get that.

So they voted - fine- the topic should not have been on this - now what they do on their parents dime is the parents responsibilities- what they are shown on the public dime is different. Tons of social pressure can come to into play -

Now if they were voting on a class trip - fine by me- But as Karrie mentions, and correctly - voting on a snuff film is beyond the pale.

I don't necessarily disagree. Like I said I'm torn.

I'm mixed about this too. When I was a kid I had a BB gun. I shot mostly at targets until one day I decided to see if I could hit a moving target. I shot a barn swallow. When I picked up the dead bird and saw how fragile and beautiful it was, I threw up. It dawned on my that I had needlessly taken a life. I never shot at anything I did not intend to eat after that. It was a true life changing revelation.

In my life, I have seen blood and gore where I was at the scene of many accidents and had to wade n to save people's lives (or not), but not once did I fail to function because of the gore that I encountered. I have seen people walk away from people dying because they couldn't handle the blood. In spite of all the comments to the contrary, the kids experienced something real, something that happens in life. It was an invaluable lesson that everything is not a sunshine and lollipops. Life can be gruesome and ugly.

And no, I don't recommend eating humans as they are mostly toxic waste in our "civilized" society.

Much better ways to prove the points you made ref sunshine and lollipops that do not use a snuff film.

Have you ever played a First Person Shooter. Talk about gore. Most kids today have seen more gore than most soldiers in a combat zone. I think a taste of real life might prove useful. I think most of the comments on this thread are knee jerk reactions and not very well thought out.

I do get what your saying. I see your point but I have to say that I don't see any educational value in viewing a snuff film. Discussing it's existence, sure. Discussing the impact of the crime, the media circus, absolutely. Tragic, sad, horrific, it's still a current event.

But if I put the benefit of context possibly provided by watching it with an adult (as opposed to watching it on their own) on a scale and measure it against the dignity of the victim and how demeaning it is to have his final moments displayed in that manner, it doesn't even compare.

Excellent post SLM. Dammed excellent. People many, not all have missed the impact of the indignity done to this man- to his family- to his friends - and do not see the reality of the pain, the torture, knowing you are about to die. And that this snuff video will circulate the Net till the end of days.

Thank you. Many do miss that part, because it becomes about a 'media event'. Everyone does it too some degree, it's easy to get caught up in it all. We always remember the name of the killers. Do we remember the names of the victims?

I think this teacher would have done a far greater service to his students if he'd opted to showcase the humanity of Lin Jun, the victim.

Myself I realized the hurt this has caused the family but your post pointed out things that I had set to the side in my mind. Thanks for bringing that to everyone's attention.

Don't misunderstand me, I can get caught up in the media sensation too. We all can. But when I stop and think, when we all stop and think, I believe that the really important issues become self-evident for most of us. It should always be about the victim.

A couple of years ago we had a discussion here comparing how things are today compared to how they were in 1959, and if I remember correctly things today had the edge for being better. Maybe it's time to take another look!

This happened in Laval but it also happened in Terrebonne and in the Saguenay. Imagine these mindless twits are teaching the future adults that will eventually run this country.

Teacher who showed alleged Luka Rocco Magnotta murder video to students could face criminal charges | News | National Post

Montreal police are conducting an investigation into a teacher who showed the video of the alleged murder and mutilation of Jun Lin to his Grade 10 students.

The unidentified history and citizenship teacher at Cavelier-De LaSalle high school in the borough of LaSalle screened the grotesque scenes during his class on June 4, reportedly after a show of hands on whether students wanted to see it.

Police believe the video depicts the actual killing, dismemberment and cannibalism of Mr. Lin, 33, a student from Wuhan, China who was studying computer science at Concordia University.

A police spokesman has described the content as so disgusting that seasoned detectives forced to watch it as part of their investigation were left shaken.

The type of charge that Lafrenière said could result falls under the “offences tending to corrupt morals” in the Criminal Code.

Cavelier-De LaSalle High School teacher who showed alleged Magnotta murder video to Montreal class fired | News | National Post

MONTREAL – The teacher who screened a video that police allege depicts the murder of Jun Lin at the hands of Luka Rocco Magnotta has been fired, the Marguerite Bourgeoys school board announced Thursday.

“The unacceptable nature of the teacher’s action demanded an unequivocal response,” school board chairwoman Diane Lamarche-Venne said in a statement.

The 29-year-old teacher showed students in his Grade 10 history class the gruesome video on June 4 after they voted in favour of seeing it by a show of hands. The video shows a naked, bound victim being stabbed with an icepick, decapitated and dismembered.

Students had circulated a petition demanding that the teacher keep his job, saying they were the ones who had asked to see the video.

A protest was held outside the west-end Cavelier-De LaSalle High School around lunchtime today while much of the student body has signed a petition calling for the return of the teacher.
