Why not put the same restrictions that hemp cultivation has, 1/4 mile from any 'business' where the general public can freely enter. During prohibition the 'problem' was solved by the formation of private clubs. Entrance is by membership that includes signing a waiver that covers smoking and all sorts of other 'rights'. You accept the consequences that might also include medical care for smoking related illnesses. Such a place would be expected to have higher than normal filtration systems (ie tables would have a surface that allowed for a vacuum to all ashtrays) All smoking material would be sold in-house via purchased credits and vending machines, add in whatever else can be offered and that is more humane than killing the 'addicts'. My bar is How the West was Lost. then have a cigar-store theme complete with fake cigar sales at the door. That is where the tokens are purchased via a 'membership card'. Anybody who has ever bought beer ater the bars have closed is familiar with these 'clubs/houses'. The legit way has lots of tax deductions BTW etc.

Give the smokers the seeds to grow their own, if that is too much trouble, they just became non-smokers. Butts are eliminated just by making all cigs the ones you roll yourself, the whole butt is recycled into the next cig, or it is so small it is not 'pollution'.

LOL, an old pot smoking pipe was a converted WWI gas-mask. Perhaps a tobbacco smoker can wander the 'public places' if all 'pollution' is contained in such an 'portable device'. Rather than going 'out-side' you just don the mask and hit a button.

As for 'your right to smoke stops at my nostrils', this would be a perfect solution. Keep the smoke in your mask, inhale it all, keep it in your lungs, and as long as I don't smell it, kill yourself all you want.

lol I don't smoke. The place to stop it is at the places the tobacco is grown. A club that was custom made for smokers could have cleaner air than some cities. Non smokers would buy a membership just so they could breath clean air, for a price. The masks are just for pointA - pointB trips. Any patents could be applied to the 'home version'.

All that matters is that you take the cirgarette butts with you when your done, unles mabye they biodegrade fast and i dont know that, then yea you can smoke in parks
I used to smoke rollies and if I smoke it to as small as it could get and rubbed my fingers together they was nothing but dust in the wind or something an ant could pack away.
The filters will probably outlast the rocks if the birds don't choke on them first. As fire hazard it might be wise to keep the smoking to rest-stops and the camps rather than along any part of the path.

Why wouldn't they biodegrade? Tobacco is a natural product, it can get decomposed easily. And there is the paper. I would think it would be totally biodegradable.

Smokers are the worst litterers. They toss their butts everywhere and anywhere.

There's always a few slobs around. But maybe a smoking bench with an ashtray wouldn't be out of the question. I just find some people get a little too "holy" over smoking. (probably the long term ex smokers who quit in the last couple of months)

I know this is brought on by the anti smoking fanatics but Really it is a good idea from a safety standpoint. Loggers are not allowed to smoke in the bush during fire season which runs from April 1 until the end of October. They can only smoke in the machines or their trucks. Stupid people let loose in the bush have been known to start large fires as have morons tossing buts out the window on the highway. So I am in favor of this even though their reasoning is flawed. At least for cigarettes.

Besides lightning, runaway controlled burns (slash fires) are more apt to start fires than smokers. Having said that, I quit smoking four years ago and I am now very sensitive to any smoke. Forest fires make being outside almost impossible.

No. You should be able to smoke both tobacco and marijuana in public parks. It is not like you can get second hand smoke, unless there is hundreds of smokers there, and they are staying there. I'd rather they smoke there then on the city streets.

Oh and for the record, I smoke neither. I still support banning smoke inside public buildings, but outside, is free game. Unless you create smoking zones inside buildings. Like they used to for restaurants. I personally greatly prefer smoke-free buildings.

When I lived in Sydney Bondi Beach was wall to wall people. It probably only makes sense to ban tobacco use there. However, I suspect a good deal of the fuss is due to a problem smokers created for themselves; and that is the fact that many of them regard the world as their ashtray. Hundreds of smokers tossing thousands of cigarette butts into the sand eventually create an unsightly mess, polluting not only the beach but also the water. As for not smoking in other parks, if smokers would refrain from tossing used cigarettes everywhere they walk it would be an improvement. There are few things more unsightly than going for a walk in Banff or Jasper and finding the entire trail littered with tobacco products.

I know what you mean - and I agree, but your logic is sort of flawed. That is like banning garbage because people litter. You really should go after them for littering then, and make littering a harsher punishment, especially if it is cigarettes they are littering.

It is not just unseemly or environmentally unsound, it also can pose a real risk of fire, if they just flick the cig still partially lit onto the grass. Some people really are irresponsible. I won't say stupid, but they just don't care enough.

Maybe if they burned their own house down by doing it, they'd care more.
