Northern Ontario,
When you install windows 10, make sure you read and make the proper selection on how your future windows updates are being delivered.
Microsoft has found a way to save on their bandwidth by having the public share their updates...
Found a website that explains it better than I could
How to stop Windows 10 from using your PC's bandwidth to update strangers' systems | PCWorld
While nowhere close to being a computer geek, I'm the kind who likes to look into every nook and cranny of a system, and since I have to keep updating three computers, I had to find how it's done on that system.
A lot of people will not bother with those settings...
One thing that bothers me about that is that some hacker could purposely corrupt a downloaded update and let some unsuspecting microsoft customer download it to his PC and keep spreading it that way....

I've got mine set to Download just from from Microsoft.
It might just leave an opening for someone to get into your system........call me paranoid....but I like my security...

Northern Ontario,
Sounds like a stupid option. But I am sure it saves Microsoft some money.
Every new system has security loopholes that need to be found and plugged before hackers and virus writers can find them.
This one took me three days to find, because I prefer to manually download updates on my personal PC that are not security updates and it took me three days to find that settings app...
Now to see what Steve Gibson has to say about this new system.....
I like to browse this site every chance i get and when I wan to check my security...

Windows 10's Worst Feature Installed On Windows 7 And Windows 8

Software specialist site gHacks has discovered that Microsoft has pushed four new updates to both Windows 7 and Windows 8 which introduce new data collecting and user behaviour tracking features.

Furthermore gHacks notes that ” these four updates ignore existing user preferences stored in Windows 7 and Windows 8 (including any edits made to the Hosts file) and immediately starts exchanging user data with vortex-win.data.microsoft.com and settings-win.data.microsoft.com.

“ These, and maybe others, appear to be hardcoded which means that the Hosts file is bypassed automatically”, gHacks explains.

The Windows 7 and Windows 8 Advantage

While this development will inevitably amuse Windows 10 users (unless they are considering a downgrade), the clear benefit of Windows 7 and Windows 8 at this point is updates are not mandatory.

This means Windows 7 and Windows 8 users can choose not to download the updates or, if they have already been installed, they can be uninstalled and neither operating system will automatically reinstall them without user permission.

Taking this a step further, Windows 7 and Windows 8 users can right click on any updates shown by Windows Update and choose ‘Hide Update’. This will stop them being searched for and accidentally installed again.

If only Windows 10 users were so lucky….

Northern Ontario,
It's been a month now, and "windows defender" is still refusing to work alongside AVG 2015 (the paid version) , on all three PCs
Currently using malwarebytes which works well with AVG..
"Windows old" folder, 30+ gigs still hasn't been removed by Microsoft after a month like they were supposed to.
I'll wait a week then use "Disk Cleanup" in administrative tools.....Both can be removed under system files ...I think?
Yup... they can!

Spring for a spare hd and install win 10 on that drive and save you current system as you make the change over. Might was well invest in a touch pad instead of a mouse as there a gestures a mouse will never be able to make and win 10 is meant for touch screen comps and pads rather than otical mice

Thanks for the advice, I'm getting Linux tomorrow.
Like that would make a difference. Having the whole OS all in ram is a bit of a kick though

I'm only guessing that it might.

got a new computer recently, my son-in-law, who is a computer programmer, among other computer wise things,
said he wouldn't be so mean to me by installing windows 10, so I have windows 8, (I think, lol), anyway
once I got use to the new windows, I am fine with it, works well, and easy to understand.

I lost the ability to file new Wordperfect 11 documents with this new (yes NEW) Windows 8.1 FRED and I have low volume sound only - a problem I had on Windows 7 too. I'm thinking about just exorcising the whole bloody thing and downloading Windows XP. I liked Windows XP

No Windows 10 for me. They couldn't even pay me to use it. I tried it for a week and am back to 7........

Microsoft has a new browser. It launched with Windows 10 and it’s called Edge. The company says it’s faster, more battery efficient and all-round better than Chrome or Firefox. You can even draw on websites with a stylus. Trouble is, not very many people are using it.

So now Microsoft’s trying to bribe you to switch.

The newly rebranded Microsoft Rewards – formerly Bing Rewards, which paid people for using Bing as their search engine (another product Microsoft says is better than a Google product but that very few people actually use) – will now pay you for using Edge, shopping at the Microsoft store, or using Bing.

Users of Edge who sign up to Microsoft Rewards, which is currently US-only, are then awarded points simply for using the browser. Microsoft actively monitors whether you’re using Edge for up to 30 hours a month. It tracks mouse movements and other signs that you’re not trying to game the system, and you must also have Bing set as your default search engine.

Points can then be traded in for vouchers or credit for places such as Starbucks, Skype, Amazon and ad-free Outlook.com – remember, if you’re not paying for something, you are the product.

Whether paying people really works, or whether people really want to be tracked in their computer usage down to the nth degree – or to be made aware that they already are at least – remains to be seen.

Edge is actually pretty good. Particularly if you’re on a Windows 10 laptop on battery power. But it will take a gargantuan effort and lots and lots of money to get the 58% of internet users employing Chrome to switch to Edge in any meaningful number. Microsoft’s new scheme is unlikely to do that.
