I figured, but your example was of the money going to the Vatican, which is different from helping people in need elsewhere. So I thought it would be good to see if that difference mattered to you.

Nope I see non profit as a benefit for the congregation and community not for the international organization to scam the system over all.

The Vatican doesn't have the money you think it does.

Maybe not, but I think it has more than you think they have with being the last of the Roman empire and all, BTW I'm a Catholic with paid membership so I'm trying to use them as an example because I know the structure a little better than others.

They have their means to keep Churches open. Have you noticed the spike in Filipino and Vietnamese immigrants in the pews?

How rich is the Vatican? So wealthy it can stumble across millions of euros just 'tucked away'

Vatican City itself has a rich economy relative to its size. Though data is scarce, and the exact GDP figure is unknown, the CIA estimates Vatican City's 2011 revenue to be $308m. It only has a population of 800 people, meaning its nominal GDP per capita is $365,796 – making it the richest state on the planet by this measure.

What we do know is that Vatican Bank, officially titled the Institute for the Works of Religion, manages €5.9bn ($7.3bn, £4.64bn) of assets on behalf of its 17,400 customers. And it manages €700m of equity which it owns. Another titbit to emerge is that it keeps gold reserves worth over $20m with the US Federal Reserve.
The bank has been caught up in a number of scandals in the past, including the funding of priests caught up in sex abuse allegations and of money laundering for the Mafia and former Nazis.
This is why there are moves within parts of the church to make it more like a normal bank and open up its accounts for greater scrutiny. Protections for religious organisations mean it does not currently face the same transparency obligations as other financial institutions.

Yes but the congregations as whole are losing members big time in recent years our church was just taken off the books because we can't afford to keep the doors open full time anymore.

Vatican discovers hundreds of millions of euros off balance sheet

Cardinal George Pell, the Vatican's economy minister, has said millions of euros had been found "tucked away" off official balance sheets of the Holy See's various departments.
In an article for Britain's Catholic Herald Magazine, Cardinal Pell, who was charged with sorting out the Vatican's messy finances, wrote that financial reforms have been taking place in his department.

There just something immoral about the state taxing charity. It's the sort of thing some petty medieval tyrant would do. The state is bad enough as it is. Why would we want to make it worse by having it greedily take a cut out of charity?

Non profit money staying within Canada is still technically taxed with service fees, hidden taxes, gst, pst, etc. so the Gov is still getting a cut of it, off shore not so much and no benefit to the rest of Canadians

Gov'ts role is to apprehend anyone who is breaking the law, otherwise keep their f**king nose out of it!
