Washington, Feb 17 : The United States, after months of reaching out and being accommodating to China, has decided to shift course and welcome the Dailai Lama, the Tibetan spiritual leader to Washington.

For much of President Barack Obama's first year in office, his administration tried being accommodating, but the White House is now shifting its strategy on China.

Next week, Obama will welcome the Dalai Lama to the White House, a move that has agitated relations with the emerging superpower, Politico reports.

But Obama has done more: Selling weapons to Taiwan, denouncing Internet censorship and challenging China's overvalued currency all have caused Chinese officials to call for retaliation.

For much of Obama's first year in office, his administration tried being accommodating - and took political heat for seeming to defer to China.

The president delayed meeting the Tibetan spiritual leader ahead of a summit with Chinese President Hu Jintao. The White House played down its concerns about China's monetary policy. It elevated China as a key partner on curbing climate change and weapons proliferation.

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton even put human rights on the back burner, saying it couldn't interfere with work on other global crises.

"The Obama administration came in with unrealistic expectations," said John Delury, associate director of the Asia Society's Center on US-China Relations.

"All of this effort for collaboration wasn't reaping much of a harvest. ... This relationship wasn't ready to go to new heights."

Now the White House is compensating for that "tactical mistake," said Michael Green, an Asia expert and former aide to President George W. Bush.

Meanwhile, the Chinese are fuming, threatening to ban US firms, withhold international cooperation and dump US Treasury bonds.

Religion ensures the decline of the USA as an important strategic power in the world. Most Europeans have given up on religion, and why not, the Scientific Revolution proved there is no supreme being. Asia causes nothing but trouble in Europe with its religions like Islam nowadays. Junk them all.

To me Tibet is like Quebec, outsiders keep out. So the USA is irritating China for simply domestic votes.

I saw on National Geographic a documentary on Tibet. It showed how a father deciding one daughter would get married and another would enter a convent. Issue closed. That is what Obama is supporting. Pointless.

C'mon DM, religion?

I am not sure what, if anything, will cause this decline; but I do know that religion will not be one of the reasons. We are not as religious as you think. Sure we have our areas of the bible belt and loud mouth preachers but I highly doubt those things will be our downfall.

It's not we, it's the USA's decline. The USA has some serious strategic competition these days. Sure, relgion is not as strong as it was, and it is thankfully declining. But why encourage it? Why encorage a sunset industry? The USA is wasting political capital talking to a leader that has nothing to offer the modern world. Why can't some senator talk to the Dali Loser instead?

Rarely have I seen so much BS in one post.

1. You will note that America only began to slip as a world power when she lost her religion........

2. The Scientific Revolution proved no such thing.......and if you confronted Newton, Galileo, Copernicus, or most of the other scientific giants of that age with that point, they would recoil from you in horror.

3. China invaded Tibet, has murdered tens, if not hundreds of thousands in Tibet........ruthlessly crushed dissent in Tibet, and are pro-actively engaging in the destruction of the Tibetan religion, people, and culture.......to equate that to Quebec reveals a complete ignorance of the facts.......no matter their cultural mores do not mesh with yours.

Ok Tibet was invaded and reoccupied/liberated by China, in preperation for the installation of a communist/capitalist 21st century efficient (planet class) governmental/imperial (experts) system. Most of the remaining indiginous subjects are regularly tossing rose pedals at the benevolent Chinese liberators who have at last brought hope and change to a rural Chinese province long neglected by circumstances, to deep to get into here, it is widely accepted by the grateful province of Tibet that this is in fact a family reunion.

America lost its religion? Are you iliterate? America offers the most extensive eclectic selections of religion on the planet, the choice is fantastic #1 actually, including the bizzare cult you belong to. Religion is one of the few top remaining growth industries in America. I partially agree with your assessment of the scientific revolution, it's singular accomplishment is to have proved beyond doubt how stupid we are. IMO

ps i almost forgot this (Rarely have I seen so much BS in one post.) It is my considered opinion arrived at scientifically after years of study and investigation and math and other stuff that you regularly must have seen as much BS as this many times while you were writing it.;-) I await your reply with rapt anticipation as always.

1. How about some dates? They owned the latter half of the 20th century. In the 19th century they were just another great power.

2. Sure, those guys were all religious. So what. They overturned the old order with the scientific method. The theory and practice finally came together in what we call science. You can "believe" in god all you want but scientific progress has pushed that entity aside. Prove god is as real as a chair or snow and I'll listen.

3. It is like Quebec, Tibet wants its own nation too.

China is much much much harsher obviously. I don't like at all what China is doing. Perhaps the West could help Tibet by getting rid of the Dali Loser as politically he is a failure for his people. Many Tibetans dislike his approach.

So let me get this straight:

You would push aside the beliefs of the geniuses that changed the world of science, to accept the assumptions of the lesser minds that followed.......

Obviously, you have accepted Science as your religion, the technocrat as your saviour.

There are more things in heaven and earth that are known in your philosophy.

Personally, I don't think God has been pushed aside yet.

Newton said he stood on the shoulders of giants. Maybe he would have agreed with you.

No need to capitalize science. Try to be less feudal and archaic.

I am very untechnocratic in practice, I have a Liberal Arts degree. But I really dig modern housing, plumbing, craps, crappers (toilets), jet travel and a few other things lesser minds have created to make my life pretty comfy.

Your powerful g/God can't even ensure it snows for the Vancouver Olympics. Humbug.
