LOGAN, W.Va. — Authorities said Tuesday they are considering hate crime charges in the case of a woman who was tortured while being held captive for at least a week, and they are investigating the possibility that she was lured by a man she met on the Internet.
The victim was repeatedly called a racial slur while her captors sexually abused, beat and stabbed her, her mother said.
Six people, all white, including a mother and son and a mother and daughter, were arrested in connection with the alleged abduction of the 20-year-old black woman, who was held captive at a home in Big Creek in Logan County, about 50 miles southwest of Charleston.

Besides being sexually assaulted, Williams had been stabbed four times in the left leg and beaten, Porter said.
During her capture, Williams was forced to eat rat and dog feces and drink from the toilet, according to the criminal complaint filed in Logan County Magistrate Court. She was also choked and doused with hot water.
One of those arrested, Karen Burton, is accused of cutting Williams' ankle with a knife and using the N-word in telling Williams she was victimized because she is black, according to the criminal complaint.

Even as a child, I could never understand how someone could possibly hate someone based solely on the colour of their skin. It still amazes me to this day that someone could hate someone for a reason such as that. I have never understood it and I guess I never will.

I doubt there ever was total peace within the community humans - in our early stages up to the present state of evolution and development. It is within us to fight, therefore we still use it as a method of accomplishing our goals.

We now we recognize it as a flaw rather than a positive attribute and generally speaking most of us try to avoid cruelty and violence as a solution to anything. At least in the majority we tend to prefer pacifism or say we do.

If threatened personally however, I doubt there is one who would give up our life without a battle of some kind.

What I am suggesting is that you are concluding, that what you are saying is not necessarily true. It appears to be. It is the most "logical" conclusion, but it is nevertheless a conclusion. It does not leave the question open. You may be right. I'm not saying that you are wrong only that by assuming that you already know the answer you have killed the question;is there a way of living in this world without conflict? The mind will tell us "no." But it is the mind that is the problem. The mind is the memory(the thought) the egos, the me the I and that is what interferes with our seeing 'what is , the Truth . So, what are we to do Curio.

Again you are concluding and that is not a fact .A priest in German concentration camp did just that ,Gandy's followers ( wrong spelling) in India . I,m sure scores of other people in order to protect their loved ones or their believes gave their life without any hesitation .

This is a side of humanity that I will never understand, whether the excuse is race, sexuality, or country of origin... taking pleasure in inflicting pain is absolutely beyond my grasp.

Fighting for one's own life, I can understand.

Fighting for the lives of your family, I can understand.

But inflicting pain just to watch someone hurt? I'm truly glad I don't get it.

And why is it that racists seem so damn good at it? It seems anytime people start talking of race crimes, it brings to mind hangings, burnings, women being raped, people being dragged behind trucks.

Where does their special little flaw come from? Is it from this sort of indoctrination? Mom bringing her kids along to watch a black woman tortured and beaten? Where does it start?

It's no wonder my skin instantly crawls when someone starts talking about how much better Caucasians are than other races.

Again you are concluding and that is not a fact .A priest in German concentration camp did just that ,Gandy's followers ( wrong spelling) in India . I,m sure scores of other people in order to protect their loved ones or their believes gave their life without any hesitation .

Not all of us are priests existing through 'death while living' conditions, nor Gandhi who was an exemplary and far-sighted human who had qualities none of us have been fortunate to possess - but if that is where we are headed I have hope for the human race.

Yes we would battle to save others and ourselves - but the two examples you gave were two gentlemen who had definite assurance in their minds they were on a plane below their eternal lives - and for them it was an easy step up.

Some of us aren't so lucky to have practiced such acceptance - unless we are expecting death by violence and have to make pre-emptory decisions about what we would do if attacked.

The majority I am inclined to say would fight to the death - even if it was an internal battle of the mind.

We are all given life - we would die to keep it if necessary.

It is not hate that causes humans to commit these atrocities against our fellow bretheren but fear.

It's the same "hate" that causes us to will kill certain bugs and "lesser" forms of animals because we "hate" them. We fear rats, snakes, etc for 'perceived' threats to our safety. Not comparing animal quality of life to human, nor am I belittling this woman's experience.

Man this thread brought me down....but it is needed to invoke the reality of our present state of affairs.....

Fundamentalist racism....perpetuated in West Virginia because of big labor and lots of social programs. It started in the 1800's. Free black men came to West Virginia and found work in coal mines. Often, this meant that a local son didn't have a spot when he became old enough to work. Then affirmative action came in, requiring a percentage of the work force to be "colored" and it was hard to meet those quotas in mostly white WV. So blacks were imported from other states. Same with college enrollement--a certain number of students had to be nonwhite. So if you have 100 spots and 10% had to be black, some of the white kids missed out--often to poorer, less educated blacks just to fill the quota.

There's generations of resentment there, and in many other blue collar sorts of places. Im not saying that makes racism right. Im saying that the basis of hate has some history.

Most people are racist to some extent. But they don't act on it. When you combine racism with substance abuse, poverty, or mental illness or some other societal factaor, someone is going to act out. Im not excusing, just seeing how it's bound to happen.

I'm so glad this young woman wasn't killed and that she will be OK, and will live her life.

So, saying that, i'm also glad these people were caught, glad they are being shown to the rest
of the world, so that we can see what pure 'scum' looks like with our own eyes.

I wonder how human beings can evolve to such a state of pure filthy meaness and vulgarity, it
baffles me, it really does. I wonder how many more are walking the streets.

They will be dealt with, we will not forget the story, and maybe it will help our society improve, and

Animals do that to keep their flock strong, and to make sure the "deficient" animal doesn't produce equally deficient off-spring. Maybe, racism in humans first originated from the same source. However, we are supposed to be evolved enough by now to outgrow urges to kill people with different skin color. This story really horrified me. It's incredible that things like these still happen in the 21st century. I really hope that all the attackers have some mental problems, otherwise this story is still scarier.
