Our culture confuses sport with competition.
Sport is about enjoyment of one's physical abilities, co-ordination and prowess. Many sports can be practiced solo. Even team sports can be enjoyed without score-keeping.
Competition is about 'winning' - i.e. outperforming adversaries. This immediately raises the question of how to make competitors 'start from a level playing field.' In truth that's practically impossible; no two people are identical to start with. But attempting to enforce it gives rise to some complex, bizarre and unworkable rules about what/who is fair/acceptable. Questions about gender identity can be an example.
