"Season ain't over."

Not too long ago, the Pittsburgh Steelers were 1-6 after seven games (of a sixteen-game season). A motivational speech by Coach Bill Cowher, and some procedural changes (no significant changes to personnel or the system), led them to win the last nine games. They went into the playoffs at 10-6, and won the Super Bowl.

"It ain't over til it's over."

Do you think the caliber of the Roughriders (the non-injured ones) this year is equivalent to the quality of the Steelers that season?

I don't really know what "calibre" is. Coupla years ago my Ravens went to Denver in the playoffs for what should have been an easy ride for the Broncos. We won in double overtime on the strength of unbelievable heroics. Then we went on to stomp the sh*t out of the Patriots in the AFC Championship on our way to the Super Bowl.

Two years later, in the AFC Championship, essentially the same Patriots team struggled back from 14-point deficits twice against essentially the same Ravens team, on their way to beat the heavily-favored Seahawks in the Super Bowl.

What is "calibre?" I think it means how a team looks "on paper." It's an important factor, but not the only factor, and not even necessarily the most important factor.

But they had talent

Though I cannot pinpoint exactly what the problem is with my Riders - except of course the penalty problem - lack of talent is not one of them. What is needed, IMO, is the ability to put that talent to good use. CC has been given another chance to show us he is the person to do that and believe me I will be watching closely to see if indeed he can.

In my opinion and observation, rarely does a team perform for a coach once he has been placed on the hot seat.

True. Do you think this will be the once?
If I had the faintest idea, I'd be a big-time sports journalist guy.

I'm just a fan, motivated more by loyalty than credible analysis.

By the way, how weird is that? I've never been to Saskatchewan. Don't have any real connection to the Riders, or to Sask, at all. Loved the old Baltimore Stallions in 94-95, but if I had any connection to a CFL team based on my visits to Canada, it would probably be the Redblacks, the Argos, or the Ti-cats.

Oh well, love works in mysterious ways.

Just a note, frequent penalties are usually a sign of team discipline and almost always come back to poor coaching or a team no longer listening to (or caring about) their coaches.
Agreed. Be interesting to see if Chamblin can turn it around.

This is my belief too and the reason why I put CC on the hot-seat so frequently. Whether he can get the room back or not is yet to be seen.

The Ti-Cats have been my 'back-up' team as petros puts it for years now and I always cheer for them when they are not playing my guys. Glad to see they are having a decent season. I also like what I see of the Argos so far though they dropped their last one. Not a fan of Hank's but am happy for Ottawa fans this year as the team is giving them a few more wins then last year.

My provincial team is the Lions but I rarely cheer for them unless they are playing at home and not against my Riders as I like to see the fans get their money's worth as they did last night.

I mostly just follow the Riders. I'll watch other teams if I'm not busy, but I generally don't have the time, and less when the NFL starts up.

This'll be a good weekend. I have no plans, my lady friend is out of town, it's hot and humid outside. Good time for football bingeing.

Montreal plays Ottawa tonight, Tec and we might get our first look at the much talked about Michael Sam but I am much more interested in watching Rakeem Cato. The rookie QB for Montreal has proven himself to be a formidable contender for starter. Not a huge fan of Hank's as he can blow hot and cold in the same series but I wouldn't be unhappy to see the RBs win at home for their fans.

Tomorrow our Riders will be in Toronto to play the Argos who dropped their last game and will definitely be looking for their first win at home after being on the road for the last nine months.

Sunday it is the Bombers in Hamilton and I will be cheering for the Cats.

Really hoping for a great weekend of football.

GO RIDERS, GO.

Come now! Do you really think people with ability would pick Saskatistan?

Are you saying the Riders suck because they play like women or because their balls are chafing?

If the Riders were playing with half the heart and passion that many of our Canadian Women's Teams have displayed on their way to international championships, I would be a very happy camper.

Best play I've seen in ages from the Riders closes out the 1rst Q - Brett to Corey Williams for 61 yards and into the red zone.

First play of 2nd Q Brett to Getz TD. Flag on play. Sask - illegal blocking downfield wipes TD off the board. McCallum good on kick. Flag - Sask illegal procedure - 5 more yards and re-kick and he misses from the 41. And that folks is how the game is going for the Riders right now - 2 TDs lost to penalties.

The only good news is that TO only has a FG to their credit so far.

And another one in the 2nd. What's the goal here, to get at least one TD called back by penalty in each quarter?

15 yards on a chop block - chop block??? - been awhile since I heard that one called. Oh, I see they are trying to commit every penalty in the book. Nice to know they have a goal in mind. Sheesh.

Well if they can't actually make it to the goal line, other goals are important.
