'She has got to go': Kevin O'Leary offers $1M if Notley resigns

Kevin O'Leary made an impassioned plea to Alberta Premier Rachel Notley on Tuesday morning, asking her to step down for the sake of the Canadian economy.

Speaking to Toronto radio station Newstalk 1010, O'Leary offered to invest $1 million in Canadian energy companies if Notley resigns.

"She has got to go," O'Leary said of the provincial NDP leader. "Let me be the first to make that offer."

The Canadian entrepreneur and financial commentator said his offer comes as an individual concerned about the country and the economy. He said the Alberta government is currently "in freefall."

O'Leary said energy companies remain in the dark about potential changes to royalties, as a panel looking into what the province charges the industry has yet to release its findings. In the meantime, the NDP government has raised corporate taxes and is moving forward with plans to raise the minimum wage in the province.

Notley Responds

"You know, the last time a group of wealthy businessmen tried to tell Alberta voters how to vote, I ended up becoming premier," Notley said. "So, if now we've got a Toronto wealthy businessman who wants to tell Alberta voters how to vote, I say bring it on."

Notley was referring to a now infamous news conference held last May, four days before the Alberta election, where five prominent business leaders warned voters about the possible dire consequences of electing the NDP. On May 5, Notley and her party won a huge majority and brought an end to a 44-year Progressive Conservative dynasty.

That news conference was seen by some as a sign that Alberta's wealthy business class had too long enjoyed close ties to the Tory party.

So what should be done to protect jobs in the Oil biz in a world wide price slump?
Why did we buy GM and float oodles of cash to FIAT, Bombardier and the likes in a Global slump?

I thought Harper hated ON manufacturing?

I love your double standards.

Considering he has just proven himself to be an idiot. I really wonder how he managed to make his "millions". Paying Notely a million dollars, or even a billion dollars will not get rid of the NDP. It might get rid of her, but not the ruling party. Notley steps down, the NDP holds a leadership convention and carries on. There is no reason for the NDP government to call an election when they hold the majority of seats in the legislature.

Salty rich guy has a better pedigree than you, lol.

I guess that and the fact that he's right makes you salty.

He's right, is he. By offering one member of the legislature a million dollars to give up her seat, this moron thinks it will change things.

There was plenty of criticism and ridicule on the news tonight about the 'salty rich guy's proposal.
Does anybody realize that those 'salty rich guys' like O'Leary and Trump got rich by running enterprises in a smart and profitable way? Maybe we could benefit by having some of those 'salty old rich guys' running the government.
They got rich by doing what paid off, NOT by caving in to every group or person with a complaint and/or a demand. They made company policies and enforced them and got rich.
'Salty old rich guys' have smarts that politicians can't even comprehend; they are too focused on buying votes and gaining popularity.
I'll put my money on the rich guys who earned their riches, not on trust fund light weights like Trudeau.

Most western governments have already adopted your idea, that's why the entire western world is in debt and beginning to burn. Salty rich people have owned and operated the world for some time already.

Exactly! They have played the politicians for their own gain because the politicians can be manipulated. If those Salty rich people put their interests into running the country for the good of the country, like they do into running their businesses for the good of the businesses, the country would prosper.
Salty rich guys who show an interest in getting into politics instead of 'using' politics would benefit us all just like a successful business benefits its employees.

Mr. Oleary is another one of those rich, high profile individuals which makes me laugh, there's something about him, which has thoughts of humour dancing around my head,
i think he is Canada's take or own, depends on how you view it,of Donald Trump.
I enjoy viewing rich people playing politics, they are humours, they seem to be having too much fun, they remind me of children with new train sets, expanding on their influence, and expanding on their strange followers,
a million dollars?this alone is funny, what does that buy you in oil anything, but if anything the delivered information has contributed and hightened the frenzy and mass hysteria of Albertans, really Mr.O'Leary this province is having trouble settling in to what is right and wrong, frankly speaking Alberta has become a hostile province, thanks for stirring the pot, dividing Albertans, particularly farmers, now all those righteous people will take Mr.Oleary on side, once again people like me who have differnece of opinion will be trampled on for thinking all this talk is silly talk, laughing when Mr.Oleary's words of wisdom are introduced in the conversation of politics.
Mr.Oleary has taking "own your day" to new heights, this is funny, real funny for me,i can't wait to observe the insights of my individual BFF to his comments ,I can"t wait to hear from him again,he is funny.
but on an proud note,Alberta Premier, did not miss a beat in response, holding her laughter back,I think she thinks Mr. Oleary is just playing, and her being a good sport, decided to allow Mr.Oleary to "own his day",thanks for great leadership Ms.Notely, your class is number one.
next lesson, Does money buy class?stay tuned.

Certaintly Mr.Oleary is going to do a tv series, this will be next will it not?

... Your point?

Considering that the low commodity price would have wiped-out any/all corporate profits and therefore, a tax hike is ineffective as it pretty much applies to EBITA, the entire exercise of raising the taxes had a bigger effect on the companies NOT reinvesting any money in AB and any new investment went East to Sask.

Kinda defeats the purpose if the actions result in the gvt collecting even fewer dollars

It does have the effect of keeping the left wing make-the-rich-pay relatively happy, even if the bottom line is pretty much nil, which keeps the major players in the industry from kicking up too much of a fuss. Everybody is happy, a politician's dream.

In the big picture, even if the bottom line for the corporations does get into the black again, two percent is not a huge hit. It does in fact, just put the tax rate back pretty close to where it was around 2005, and still a darn sight lower than what it was before then.

Could this not be considered an attempted bribery of a government official?

First of all O'leary is one of these media attention seeker like Trump
As for Trudeau yup the right don't like him no surprise. I wasn't crazy
about him either but he sure is on the side of the people in the people's
mind. The real factor is he ain't Harper beyond that we will see. I for
one am prepared to see how far he gets and how long the people stay
with him.

Where's my double standard?

I am proposing a Made in Canada Oil price for Canadian Oil only.

There would be no tax handout from governments required as the users of that Oil (gas) would pay the extra to insure employment.

The general consensus is $30.00 is the break even point for the Tar Sands operation. Right now gas is selling (near me) for about 83 cents. It costs me around $48.00 to fill up and it lasts a week or longer depending on where I have to go but usually a week.

If the Made in Canada Price resulted in me paying 10 to 15 cents a liter more ($6-9) more a week but was saving those jobs, resulting in less UI claims, suicides, divorces etcetera, and no government handouts, I would happily do it ....

Here's what happened when Trudeau Sr tried that wee trick..... Canadian producers stopped operating in Canada and moved their capital outside the country in order to sell on the intl markets, and ironically, back to Canada

With the Cdn supply drying-up; Pete Trudeau starting buying oil from Venezuela at market value, shipping it thousands of miles by tanker and sold it Cdns at a huge loss to placate the entitlement crowd that believed that the Canadian oil was their resource.

Of course, as the national GDP fell, PET borrowed a bunch of cash on the intl bond markets at a paltry 18% to keep the nation in cheap oil.

... We are still paying off Trudeau's debt and will likely be doing the same considering his kid as PM has no issue mortgaging the future of Canadians.

PS - Personally, this will have a nominal impact on me, but your kids and grandkids can look forward to a tougher future
