It looks like we're finally going to get some traction on Canadian interests.

Rona Ambrose: Trump nixing NAFTA is just a matter of 'when'

Canada's trade insiders say they are preparing for the worst when it comes to the fate of NAFTA, with one top adviser saying it’s only a matter of time before U.S. President Donald Trump pulls out of the North American Free Trade Agreement.

“The consensus felt like it’s not if, it’s when he’s going to pull the plug,” Rona Ambrose, the former Conservative interim leader and member of Canada’s NAFTA advisory council, told CTV's Question Period.

Ambrose’s comments come as the latest round of talks between Canada, Mexico and the United States get underway in Montreal on Sunday. The talks are set to wrap up on Jan. 29.

I saw her on an interview show with Evan Solomon . Also Frank McKenna and Jean Charest. She didn't sound hopeful. I wonder who will blink first?

Canada (and everyone else) has to understand that anything negotiated during the Trump presidency is not worth the paper it is written on.

It probably is. Trump is nothing but a mad-man and his own party will be trying to get the situation back to normal ASAP after he is removed.

Trumpites think Donny can undo everything Barry did but everything Donny does is untouchable. Nobody has ever accused Trumpites of being bright.

I doubt he will but if he does it wouldn’t bother me much. Also, if he did Congress would have to approve it. They can’t even agree on the colour of the sky right now.

Perhaps Canada and Mexico could dump NAFTA, join ASEAN, rename it Association of Southeast Asian and American Nations which would allow it to keep the same acronym if it wants to, invite the US, Cuba, Haiti, and other American states to join too. The US under Trump will probably decline the offer but I imagine that Cuba, Haiti, and other states might take an interest.

Once Trump is dumped, a more reasonable US president might then consider joining ASEAN too which would effectively replace NAFTA. The advantage with that is that should any later US fool withdraw again, while it would still hurt Canada, it at least would not hurt it as much anymore.

Sure, lets scrap NAFTA - we can afford it! I mean, according to some economists I heard that Alberta stands to lose $80 Billion a year if it's scrapped so how much is scrapping it going to cost other provinces? I mean, Justin wants to "help" the middle class doesn't he?

Goods shipped from the US will cost more; goods shipped by businesses will cost more - what the hay? No problem.

And Justin is determined to tie LGBTQ, indigenous and/or human rights issues to trade - that really makes a lot of sense if you were talking to say, CHINA or IRAN but of course, he's not. We must remember that no one has any rights at all in the gold ol' U.S of A.

So ya, lets scrap the bloody thing and watch as our unemployment rate increases as businesses close and/or move. Good idea!!

That should reas ... goods shipped TO the U.S. will cost businesses more but hey they make "mucho" dollars and can afford it so just like raising the minimum wage, no one is going to suffer. Really! (tongue in cheek).

I hate this auto correct!!! should be "good ol' U.S. of A" .Guess I shouldn't hit the post button and re-read a couple of times!! sigh - my apologies

If Nafta is scrapped it is because of Trump. As far as I know Trudeau had no plan to scrap it, while Tump was against it because it was a terrible deal that Clinton made that has somehow resulted in record high markets at this time.

Scrapping NAFTA will inevitably hurt Canada. The only question now is how Canada can prevent Trump from scrapping it? Since Canada has no control on that point, we need to start to shift our attention to damage control. Joining ASEAN and expanding it to include the Americas and forming CANZUK and unilaterally dropping all tariffs could be two solutions for Canada. Let's not kid ourselves though: should the US scrap NAFTA, Canada will hurt no matter what. I'm just proposing a plan B if necessary.

As for Trudeau, he needs to learn a bit of pragmatism. When Canada's economy faces a crisis of this magnitude, pickers can't be choosers. Whatever we may think of China's internal policies, let's just trade with them as Singapore does. Singapore doesn't like the Chinese regime but it recognizes that it needs it for business and so trades with it. Canada should do the same.

Trudeau maybe have too intro Socialism in government so the economy will growth.

Canada's best allies are Australia some have telling me in CC.

It is a great irony, I know. Australia is one of our best friends and allies on the planet. In some ways, we are closer to the Aussies is some ways than with the Americans due to our common military experiences. Australia and Canada are also fierce trade competitors and there is little or no scope for us exchanging what we sell.
