I just discovered where these live and looked through my list of comments people have left. Interesting collection of crap.

A collection of the negatives:
Just because. <snip>

if it wasn't to your taste you could have just buggered off and slagged something else off instead

Yeah... very logical

Takes huge STINKING CRAP in this control room

you can't be serious MORONIC TROLL
What a useless silly feature of this forum. I can see how this feature could create a lot of hard feelings and flame wars....

Here's an idea.... if someone has something good or bad to say, why not have them say it in the post itself? I admit to leaving a negative comment once.... although I didn't call the poster names or anything.... and I didn't even know how they worked! :-? Maybe now that I know where they are contained I'll go on a bit of a "reputation spree" and leave comments for everyone! ;-) or not.

I don't blame you for being angry. Personally, I don't think the negative reps should be there at all! I really don't see the need for the positive reps either...they're nice but when I see some of the stuff that gets plus points, I honestly have to scratch my head in amazement. Sometimes, it just seems to me that the wrong people are getting the good rep points...IMHO.

Northern Ontario,
Every time I try to leave someone a good or bad rep, it says I have to spread it around.......And there is not too many people I feel like giving a bad rep to.............

Joe, I think your bitter. I have only ever givin one red one, and frankly that person deserved it. I'm of the mind the rep button is for adding that little personal comment on a post that might not be suitable in the thread. BTW, I always sign my nic so you will know if you get one from me. Anyone will a back bone would.

I use the neg rep as I feel most of us should... to dissuade abuse of others.

It basically boils down to people getting the chance to say if they feel you're giving to, or detracting from, the forum. It's funny to see the little trolls turn red within a week here because the community shows such distaste at their abuse of others. And if you watch, we do have a few with red rep. And rightly so.

Whereas, those who contribute well thought out posts devoid of personal attacks get little if any red rep.

Feel free to share some of the good rep too Joe. Surely you haven't gotten only rude comments, or you'd be one of our red stamped trolls by now.

I've never seen any. I would hope after one the nic would automaticly delete itself. ;-)

Well, since it's dependent on post/rep ratio, if someone was a rare poster, but managed to piss off the wrong side of the argument, or the wrong clique of people with their couple posts, it would be too easy to end up with a bunch of people running a newb off the board without them getting a real chance.

I think it's a useful option to have. Like Eh said, it's nice to give little comments or crticisms. I think I have given one, for trollish flaming. I always sign my name too.

Also, it's nice to know that other people appreciate something you wrote. I've posted some material that I spent a considerable amount of time developing. It's nice to hear from people who think you did well.

P.S. None of my negative reps have been signed which adds to the uselessness of the feature (and the cowardace of the users giving them).

I've gotten some negatives for cheering against the Ottawa Senators in last years playoffs. I've got others for not having the correct political opinion of this forum. In the end, they mean nothing.

Never given a negative but I have handed out some greenies (that just sounds gross!) I just found out where those things live a few days ago. Got some green and one blue - whatever that means - and a lot of nice words from folks. Thanks *blush* . What are the two colour greens?

Yah, I expected some flak. The interesting thing is, that the red came with the comment "LMAO"

hahaha

I had that happen recently. "intelligent post" with a red on it. I commented in the thread, and it turned out to be a misclick, meant to be a greenie. lol.

The blues are from newbies. It gives them the chance to comment, but protects us from some troll coming in a lowering reps straight off the bat. As for the different colors of green, I'm not sure what that's all about.

I got another one a long while back, something kinda manpiggish about Stronach and Ambrose settling a score in Parliament. Probably like a beer commerical. Can't remember now what I said, and it's not on the list in my control panel anymore.
