Religion in Schools Getting Ugly

A Toronto-area school board says it “cannot continue” to engage with the public on the subject of religious accommodation, following a board meeting that devolved into what a spokesperson described as “clear hate speech” and included someone ripping up the Quran.

A group of enraged parents behind a months-long campaign to end the accommodation of Jummah — a congregational Muslim prayer held on Friday afternoons — were cleared out of the Peel Region District School Board meeting, in Mississauga, on Thursday.

A police and security presence was heavy from the start of the meeting, which quickly went off the rails, after the board announced they wouldn’t respond to a petition demanding the end of the accommodation, which has gathered 600 signatures, until their next meeting.

As one trustee attempted to discuss retirements, a parent sitting in the front row began making retching noises. Others, already riled up because the start of the event was delayed, followed, screaming that they were being disrespected as taxpayers.

Ron Banerjee, head of the hardline anti-Muslim group Canadian Hindu Advocacy, was in the crowd, as were tens of his supporters, mostly South Asian and white parents.

Have you read this book?” screamed one woman, holding up a copy of what appeared to be the Quran. “You would be shocked. Read it, so you know what’s happening.”

“We don’t want religion in schools,” bellowed another woman. “Leave our kids alone.” In response to one parent who attempted to shout down those in the room who were “spewing hate,” she said she didn’t hate anyone and was opposed to the presence of any religion in schools.

But when a man sitting a few rows above her said “People died today because of that book,” invoking the London terrorist attack on Wednesday — which left three people dead and for which the Islamic State has claimed responsibility — she joined him, yelling, “You guys killed four people today.”

One man ripped up a copy of the Quran and threw its pages towards the front of the room, and another person walked on the pages. They remained scattered all over the floor for the remainder of the meeting.

For several minutes, the trustees waited for the crowd to settle down, but parents, who were warned that they would be kicked out if they continued to disrupt the meeting, would not relent, prompting the board to pack up their things and file out of the room. As they walked out, a group of parents started singing the national anthem.

Board chair Janet MacDougald said the board was “appalled as a Board by the anti-Muslim rhetoric and prejudice we have seen on social media, read in emails, and heard first-hand at our board meetings.”

“It has caused some of our students to feel unsafe, to feel targeted. We must not allow hatred toward any faith group to flourish,” she said. “We will not stand for that.”

The school board issued a fact sheet on Wednesday in response to “misinformation and errors that have been shared in the community and on social media,” in which they explained that Friday prayer has no impact on other students, as they “try to find a time when students are already out of class—lunch for example—or if in class, 15 minutes at the start or finish of the class,” and that students are supervised by a volunteer staff member in an already open space, thus resulting in no undue hardship.

A few weeks ago, Brampton mayor Linda Jeffrey condemned the campaign against the accommodation, calling it “hateful.”

“Muslim students require a time to pray that may happen during a school day, and we must respect that — as we do any other religious requirement,” she wrote in a statement. “Letting Muslim students pray for 20 minutes in an empty space with the supervision of volunteer staff does not cause any financial hardship.”

WTF! No religion in publicly funded schools.................

A heated debate over religion in schools saw one person thrown from a meeting at the Peel District School Board (PDSB) on Tuesday.

A revised operational procedure, allowing Muslim students to use their own sermons during Friday prayers, was received by trustees — sparking debate.

While the Muslim community applauded the decision, many other community members said religion has no place in schools.

The Peel school board brought forth a new procedure in the fall requiring Muslim students to choose from six pre-written sermons during their Friday prayers — meaning students could only use sermons approved by the board.

The Peel Board said this was to create consistency across its schools.

However, students said it violated their right to religious freedom.

“It’s easier to relate to another student, another peer, who can speak to the circumstances of other students who are of the same age and of the same context,” one student explained. “That’s far more inspiring to students who are listening than someone who may be older and not understanding the same context as a teenager lives in, in regular life.”

So the Peel Board reversed its decision, allowing Muslim students to once again write their own sermons, and presented it to trustees on Tuesday. But not before several community members voiced their concerns about accommodating religion in schools.

“The reason why I would strongly object to this is, by nature, Canada is a diverse country and there are different ethic groups that are here,” Krishna Kavoori, whose five-year-old child is in the Peel District School Board, explained. “If each one of us keeps asking for time to pray during the school day – there’s only five learning days – it’s going to be difficult.”

The meeting got so heated that one community member speaking out against religious accommodations in schools, was ejected for causing a disruption.

The disruption halted the meeting for about 15 minutes, but was quickly reconvened.

A sermon crosses a major line.

I'm for providing a prayer room or prayer time between classes.

I could support keeping a child home from school on a religious holiday (after, Christians get Sundays off).

I can even support teaching the Bible, the Qur'an or any other sacred text as literature since it would encourage students to think for themselves, try to understand the book for themselves, and not impose a particular interpretation onto them.

A sermon promotes ecclesiasticism, the idea that a person cannot read a book and come to his own understanding if it but requires a 'scholar' to interpret it for him.

That is a very dangerous mindset to promote. In some religions, the ecclesiastical class holds way too much power over its flick as it is. And when that class is fanatical, the flick will follow like sheep if they are trained to do so, to the point that the interpretations if the ecclesiastical class hold more weight than their sacred texts themselves.

Any 'sermon' should be replaced with recitation of quotes from the writings and maybe an open discussion of their meaning on an equal footing so as to promote the ability to think independently.

Jesus H. Christ on a crutch, that's one of the reasons these brain dead progtard types banned prayer in public schools in the first goddam place. F*ck!!

This is just pathetic. The same logic that was used to ban Christian prayer in public schools is now being used to force the acceptance of Islamic prayer in public schools. Talk about a complete cognitive disconnect.

Think about it for a moment. They've gone from "We must ban Christian prayer in our public schools to prevent those of other religions and non-religious people from being targeted", to "We must force acceptance of Islamic prayer in our public schools to prevent those of a certain religion from being targeted".

Self destruction is so entertaining. Islam's culture is superior, to our culture anyways. This is for the best.

I never attended public school and neither will the kids. With JT at the wheel, there will be much much more prejudices against Christians in favour of Islam. Motion M103 is not the start, it is just the most public one and this one involved our Government. The disproportionate number of Muslim vs other groups does beg to question why? Parents in public school are complaining but doing nothing. Try this BS in Catholic schools and at least the parents will try to stop it. No one wants a big Irish guy in their face.

When I was in elementary school, the nuns would patrol the halls looking for Muslims. They also walked the village streets. They warned us that if we spotted one, do not move! Muslims can only react to you if you move. They cannot see you if you remain still. The writers for Jurassic Park got the idea of tyrannosaurus rex not being able to see something unless it moved from their days in Catholic school.

The nuns had a special squad that would swing into action should a Muzzie get loose in the school. The buzzer would go off and the teacher would close and lock the classroom door. If you watched through the narrow window into the hallway, you'd see them sprint by, carrying all sorts of equipment. The kids called them, 'nuns on the run'.

The procedure was quite simple. Two nuns carrying a net would be in front. They would approach and net the Muzzie. Two nuns with ferulas were directly behind the two with the net. Their job was to drive 'the Holy Rod' into the heart of the person in the net. Their ferulas had a sharp point at one end.

Father Carrick said it took a special type of nun to do that. I believed him, and still do. So every time I hear this, I think of nuns on the run.

The idea was adapted from the Church and used on Tans for many years too.
