Perhaps at some time we lived on a planet that placed value in concepts like justice, loyalty, the “rule of law”, personal responsibility, and so on, but those days are long gone….if they ever in fact existed.
The great engines of commerce and the practitioners of “progress” have laid a new foundation and built a new framework that renders a notion like the United Nations, if not obsolete, something like a naïve curiosity….
Britain and the United States legitimized the creation of the state of Israel and the number of UN resolutions that Israel has ignored exceeds those it’s adopted. Whether forced by geopolitics or economics, the United Nations was complicit in creating the festering sore that the Israeli-Palestinian situation is and has been for half a century.
Without both the will and the means to hold member nations accountable, the United Nations has no teeth, and what we end up with is a group of nations prepared to ignore and defy the UN when that great instrument of new world power…i.e. “wealth” is at stake.
The United States has ignored, under-cut and sabotaged the United Nations and behaved, in accord with its self-declared Manifest Destiny and in so doing escaped the responsibility it ought to accept for its foreign policies for decades.
Videos of Donald Rumsfeld hobnobbing with Saddam Hussein and supplying Iraq with chemical weapons during the Iran-Iraq conflict are all but forgotten.
The Illegality of the war in Viet Nam (predicated on the lies of the Gulf of Tonkin) “incident” are similarly ignored.
The policy of the United States in arming the mujahideen and complicity in moving Islamic radicals out of Pakistan into both Afghanistan (the Tliban) and other nations in the Middle East is a matter of public record.
The fact that there were no weapons of mass destruction as claimed by UN resolution and the dog and pony show subsequently orchestrated by Colin Powel at the UN demonstrates the “value” of truth and justice both the United States and the United Nations is prepared to accept.
Commerce is the new standard and the new rule of law as far as the Merchants of Death are concerned and there is no place in the rules of economics for anything even remotely similar to the United Nations.
A wonderful idea, poorly executed and permitted to devolve into another Enron or Liberal Party Sponsorship Program or any other image of corruption we’re all learning to live with in the New World of “Greed is Good”!
