Former Yukon MP Audrey McLaughlin is calling the new RCMP reality TV show “a bad idea gone, well, badder.”

McLaughlin has written a letter to Commissioner Bob Paulson at RCMP National Headquarters in Ottawa raising concerns about the show currently being filmed in Whitehorse. (See the full letter on p. 6.)

McLaughlin told the Star today she was walking her dog on Hoge Street in downtown Whitehorse Wednesday evening when she saw a woman being arrested by the RCMP.

“I looked back and I saw a guy with a clipboard crouching behind a vehicle, and then I noticed a sound system and cameras,” she said.
Starting earlier this week, the Yukon RCMP have been filming for a reality TV show, produced by an American television company.

At press time early this afternoon, the RCMP sent out a notification that they have suspended filming until they’ve had an opportunity to discuss recent feed back with the production company. There was no indication how long those discussions might take.

McLaughlin, a former leader of the federal New Democratic Party, said she has no problem with the way the police did their job in arresting the woman.

However, she questions the value of doing that while the cameras are rolling.

The woman was clearly distraught, angry and yelling.

“How can she possibly give permission for them to be filming her?” asked McLaughlin, who was the Yukon’s MP from 1987 to 1997.

Both the RCMP and the production company, True Entertainment, have said publicly if a person does not sign a waiver after he or she is filmed, the footage will never be aired.

There's been a reality cop show on TV for awhile now so this is nothing new. For some of the scenes, the citizens involved have their faces covered (for lack of a better word) so you can't identify them anyway. She's a little behind the times IMHO.

I am only partly with grumpydigger on this one. Yes the RCMP are trying to
clean up their image on the backs of other people's misery.
Worse though is the reality TV crap we are paying for on cable. It's almost
to the point of the public being peeping toms watching other peoples misery
as a new entertainment form. What the hell happened?
Let me tell you. Just like the gas companies when they went self serve and
hired you to pump their gas into your car and then pay them for it, they have
decided human misery is an entertainment form. Everything is in drug problems,
theft arrests, marriage and relationship difficulties, debt problems and a whole
onslaught of shower singers screeching into a microphone to get attention.
Is there nothing left worth watching or making programs about? yes there is but
they cost money to make and until we are bored and demand better we will
see regurgitated crap for another season.
I wonder how long it will be before its acceptable to shoot people on street cars
as entertainment? Well sadly it is, the news hours have become more about
entertainment than news

If I want to see cops arresting people, I'll go outside and sit on the front steps. For some reason they never pull over and arrest the johns who are picking up the under age hookers. Odd yet true.

They still call the show COPS do they?... I'm waiting on the producers renaming the show 'Drunk and Shirtless'.... A far more accurate description

Far as I know, Capt. It became irksome watching the poorer class of people, usually black, get rousted and busted for a gram of pot. So I quit watching.

Saw a show or two were the perp actually beat the crap out of the cop. Amazed they aired it. Course, they didn't show what happened in the jail cell.;-)

It used to be on Fox. dunno if and where anymore. Drunk and shirtless would be a good one........lol

Sometimes the cops have to put up with crap because of their attitude
I wouldn't want their job either, but there are some who really need a
course in dealing with people, in some cases dealing with themselves
first.

Well Nuggs.. If truth be told - on the weekends during the summer I might be shirtless, but am definitely drunk... Don't smoke pot though (puts me to sleep).

Keep an eye out for me on the show.. I'll be the guy arguing with the police about the notion that I'm not nearly as hammered as I possibly could be
