"far cry" is a relative term, LadyC. Whether it's 80 or 11 million orphans isn't the real issue, is it? We can dispute figures 'til the cows come home, but AIDS, in Africa especially, but elsewhere also, is taking a terrible toll. Obviously 'orphan' is an emotive term for some, and emphasises the impact this crisis is having in children, but it's a wider issue.

abstinance works wonders....and that is what the Catholic Church advocates. It sure as hell doesn't advocate fornication just to fornicate.

So rather than blaming the Catholic Church for so many peoples irresponsibilities, how about putting the blame on so many "aids orphans" where it belongs..... with the irresponsible parents...... but then, why should the irresponsible blame the irresponsible.

I'm working with a ten year estimate, Lady C. Maybe you should widen the scope of your reading.

By the same token, some people may actually benefit from narrowing their reading. To that end, here is a link to a bmj article on the subject of HIV/AIDS in the developing world. No politics, just a simple, objective overview of a serious issue that faces all of humanity.

Still as much of an idiot as always I see. They sure as hell didn't spring out of the ground..... they had parents..... who transfered the aids virus to them..... they got the virus through sexual contact.... now if they had abstained.... like the Church advocates...then no virus...and no aids infected babies that end up orphans when their parents die......

An orphan, by definition has no parents, if they had parents, then they'd be called "AIDS Children"...it's once their parents die that they are called orphans...

...but as you say, the church should dig up their mouldering corpses for the purposes of public condemnation, good thinking, dumbass... :p

How about this? Cardinal Alfonso Lopez Trujillo, president of the Vatican's Pontifical Council for the Family, told us all that HIV could pass through impermeable latex condoms: "The Aids virus is 450 times smaller than the spermatozoon," he said. "The spermatozoon can easily pass through the 'net' formed by the condom."

So tell me again why it is the Catholic Churches fault that these children have aids?

By the simple expedient of forbidding Catholics to use condoms.

That's right.... and advocating abstinance......abstinance for both parties before they gat married...then only intercourse between husband and wife.... now how does that advocacy promote the spread of aids?

Whilst the Church's imprecations are dismissed by most churchgoers in the First World as a load of papal bull, in countries in which there is little access to alternative sources of information and in which women have few rights, men looking for an excuse to practice unsafe sex seize on the Church’s teachings.

RE: Ratzinger is the new

Preaching abstinence has been an extremely inneffectual way to fight the spread of HIV, GerryH. Condom use, on the other hand has been very effective. That 80,000,000 number for orphans is partly based on the influence of the Catholic church and the US government programs that are just as sanctimonious and wrong.

There is a problem that is growing exponentially because some very influential institutions, the Catholic church and the US government, are putting their interpretation of a dusty old book before the well-being of real live human beings.

That document they talk about in the Observer could see Church honchos being arrested and hauled off in chains, Mr.Mom. Hopefully that will be a step towards people thinking for themselves.

Just for your general information: Adolph Hitler was a baptised Catholic. For some unknown reason, this fact isn't mentioned in Church literature. Go figure!
