Gerry, there isn't health worker on the planet that doesn't say that abstinence isn't the most effective protection against HIV/AIDS. Since expecting everybody to remain abstinent is not at all realistic, they promote condom use as the second line of defense.

The Pope (and the US government btw) oppose the use of condoms though. I guess in their insular and bizarre worlds they think that people will abstain if they are told to. They are, by refusing to accept human nature and the effectiveness of condom use, encouraging the disease to spread.

ROFLMAO....and your point is?

The Catholic Church considers the use of condomns to be a sin. Plain and simple. Same with the use of contraceptives. There are only 2 types of contraception that I know of that the Church allows. That would be the rhythm method, and abstinence. That's it. Anything else would be a sin. Now why would the Catholic Church council it's followers or any other of "Gods children" to sin? It matters not if it is considered "unrealistic". The Catholic Church consideres it to be "Gods will and teaching" NOT to use contraceptives for ANY reason. If you or anyone else doesn't like that, then you don't have to be Catholic and you can use all the condoms you want.

RE: Ratzinger is the new

When I watched the National and local news last night, and when they interviewed various people (catholics and otherwise) there did not seem like a whole heck of a lot of support for the new Pope.

To me the Pope is just a glorified politician. I actually think the Pope is a puppet for a few Cardinals who have the real power. You can't tell me with John Paul's 2 poor health in recent years (last 4-5 anyways) he was calling the shots or any shots for that matter.

People are dying because of your Pope's interpretation of the Bible, Gerry. That's reprehensible.

and who say's the Catholic Churches interpretation is wrong? You? You have a direct pipeline to the almighty? Notice I say "the Catholic Church", because it is not just "this Popes" interpretation. Pope John Paul II did not change the way the church taught concerning condoms. He held the line on the existing teachings. Same thing Pope Benidict will do. This bullshit about "modernizing" the church etc, is exactly that...bullshit. That would be like "modernizing" the 10 commandments to better fit todays "more open lifestyle".

How about we change "Thou shall not commit adultry" to "Thou shalt not commit adultery unless it's ok with your spouse" to better reflect the more hedonistic lifestyle of an increasingly larger portion of the population.

Or...... does the Catholic Church not have the right to practice "thier" religious beliefs.

Hey dumbass...did you read the article to the end? No of course not, because you're a reactionary twit, who hasn't the sense to know that your religion is founded on hatred, and that your imaginary friend ain't real...

Yes I read the article to the end...how about you? or did you just skim through and look for shit that fit your existing thoughts.... here's a quote from the article concerning the Hitler Youth.
He joined the Hitler Youth aged 14, shortly after membership was made compulsory in 1941.

He quickly won a dispensation on account of his training at a seminary. “Ratzinger was only briefly a member of the Hitler Youth and not an enthusiastic one,” concluded John Allen, his biographer.

Like I said.... mandatory enrollment.

Letting people die, encouraging a deadly disease to spread, because of a bizarre interpretation of a dusty old book is far less than compassionate. As for your old church, maybe it's time it left the dark ages.

Oh yes, practice away...but do be sure to shed at least one tear for the millions that the Catholic church consigns to death...

How about this....I'll shed the tear for the millions that YOU say have been consigned to death by the Catholic Church when you shed a tear for the millions that YOU consign to death with your support of abortion(infanticide).

again, the Catholic Church is doing niether of these things. Those that contract the disease, spread it through sexual conduct, and get pregnant, thus ensuring their offspring also contract the disease, are the ones encouraging and letting people die by NOT following the Catholic Churches teachings.THEY are making the consciious effort to NOT follow the Catholic Churches edicts. It is THEIR choice. Just like it is THEIR choice to use condoms if they so wish.

RE: Ratzinger is the new

They are being told that if they use condoms they will burn in hell. Husbands bring the disease home to their wives, who have done nothing wrong according to the teachings of your church.

You can try to justify it any way you want, Gerry. The fact remains that your church is killing innocents with their regressive dogma.
