Ramadan is a special month of the year for over one billion Muslims throughout the world. It is a time for inner reflection, devotion to God, and self-control. Muslims think of it as a kind of tune-up for their spiritual lives.
During Ramadan, Muslims fast from dawn to sunset every day. This means not to eat, drink or smoke during the daylight hours. For married adults, it also includes refraining from marital relations during the hours of fasting (i.e. the daylight hours). The fasting person is expected to do his best to practice self control and discipline, not to get angry easy, refrain from using harsh language or insults and to tolerate, forgive and respect others. .
The elderly and the chronically ill, have to feed a poor person for each day they cannot fast. Sick people can compensate by fasting other days when they feel well,Children dont have to fast.

Oh you who believe! Fasting is prescribed to you as it was prescribed to those before you, that you many learn piety and righteousness" (Quraan 2:183)

selin wondered;

"Don't you really know about the other meaning of "Fast" or just try to show how witty you are?"

You call it Ramadan I call it Lent.

During Lent I refrain from overindulging (or for that matter, just plain indulging) for 40+ days, without the easy out of between sunrise and sunset.

That is fasting.

During Ramadan you can (and maybe do) as you please before sunrise and after sunset. That is not really fasting except by your standards.

So, don't go sanctimonious on me.

No I am sure the Muslims march around some rock in another country and they have to go there at least once in their lifetime

you mean Mecca city in Arabia in which Prophet Mohammed has tomb- going and visiting the tomb is called as "pilgrimage". But , marching around some rock is a rituel,an arbitrary activity,by some Muslims who are visiting the tomb.

Cliffy and selin, you make a wonderfully inept pair.

do you want to join? you seem more inept than us :D

I think he means the Tawaf

"Tawaf (طواف) is one of the Islamic rituals of pilgrimage. During the Hajj and Umrah, Muslims are to circumambulate the Ka'bah (the holiest building in Mecca) seven times, in a counterclockwise direction. The circling is believed to demonstrate the unity of the believers in the worship of the One God, as they move in harmony together while supplicating to God saying "Labbaik Allahumma Labbaik".(I respond to Your call my Lord I respond to You )

Back on topic.

During the month of Ramadan, Muslims conduct special prayers each night, during which long portions of the Qur'an are recited, these special prayers are known as "taraweeh"The prayer can be very long (well over an hour)
In mosques there are Imams who have memorized the whole Quran and recite it during Taraweeh prayer.

Tonight is "the night of importance"
After the sunset of today is the night of the Qadr

In the month of Ramadan, the Quran revelation was commenced; Gabriel received the first aya of the Quran from God the All-Knowing, and revealed it to Mohammed -salam be to him.

The first aya of the Quran was revealed in the night of the Qadr or the highly valuable night which is one of the last ten nights of this blessed month. Mostly it is the 27th night of this lunar month.

This is the first aya of the Quran 96: 1-5
The explanation:

(
  • [O Mohammed] recite: in the name of your Lord Who created [the universe from the non-existence.]
  • [Who] created man from the 'worm-like structure'.
  • Recite, and your Lord is the Most Generous.
  • Who taught [the writing] with the pen [so that heavenly revelations might be written down.]
  • He taught man [some of the knowledge and sciences] that he did not know [before.])
So at the conclusion of this blessed month of Ramadan, we say: the most blessed night is mostly the coming night that follows the sunset of today.

It is a blessed night when the righteous work is multiplied in recompense and reward; and the charity and alms-giving is preferred in this day and the coming night.

In addition to reciting the Quran; Abu Abd-Allah told us, that he was reciting the Quran at this 27th night, and a slumber overcame him, when one came and said to him: Salam to you.
He said: Salam be to you also and blessing and mercy of God.
Then he awoke from his slumber.
So it is an angel who said this salam in this blessed night; as is it in the Quran 97

The explanation:

( In the name of God, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
  • We revealed the [Quran] on the 'Night of Importance'. [: the 27th. Night of Ramadan.]
  • But can you imagine what the 'Night of Importance' is?
  • [To worship God in] it is better than [Balaam's worshipping God that lasted] one thousand months and then he disbelieved and lost the reward of his work.]
  • Angels and [Gabriel, the Holly] Ghost do descend [from heaven] during it – by the leave of their Lord – ; [some out] of every Am'r [: of every kind of angels.]
  • Greeting of 'Salam!' [by the angels] it is till the rise of dawn.)

Tonight is the great night of Al-Qad'r :D

It is the anniversary of the starting of the Quran revelation in the month of Ramadan, on this blessed night.

As it is mentioned also in the Quran 44: 1-9

The explanation:
(ح م [: W. R.]
that means: Wisdom [: admonition, and] Repeated [stories.]
And the clarifying Book.

We revealed the [Quran] on a blessed night; We were used to warn [people of worshipping idols.]

During which all the admonishing am'rs [: angels] are distributed [to admonish the believers by the way of inspiration.]

Am'r [: angels] coming from Our [neighborhood in the ethereal heavens, the dwelling-place of angels]; We were used to send [angels to the prophets and apostles.]

[Sending those angels to the believers is] a mercy from your Lord [O Mohammed; for] He is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing [of their condition.]

The Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them; [then believe firmly in the words of Mohammed, Our messenger] if you do firmly believe.)

In this blessed night of Al Qad'r, I present for you this marvelous soorah 37

And this is the explanation of the first 50 ayat of this soora according to the late interpreter Mohammed-Ali Hassan Al-Hilly:

( In the name of God, Most Gracious, Most Merciful)
1. [I swear] by the [birds] flying in arrays.
2. And shouting on [the unbelievers] loudly.
3. And rehearsing a glorification [of God in their languages.]
4. [That] your God is surely One.
5. [That is] the Lord of the heavens and the earth and what between them are, and the Lord of the sun-rising [zones.]
6. We have adorned the nearest heaven [to your earth] with [meteors, like] the adornment of the planets.
7. And that [meteors] may preserve against every rebellious devil.
8. [The devils now] cannot listen to the high noble [angels], but are pelted [with meteors] from every side.
9. To outcast them, and there will be for them another chastisement [on the Judgment Day.]
10. Except [such devil] who snatched some snatching [from the angels] and was pursued by a flaming meteor.
11. So question them [Mohammed for a pronouncement] – Are they stronger as a creation, or are those whom We created [before them]? [And even], We created them out of 'dry and hard' mud.
12. But you [Mohammed] do marvel [of the signs], whereas they scoff [at them.]
13. And when they are admonished, they receive not admonition.
14. And when they see that a revelation [has been revealed], they go on scoffing.
15. And they say [that]: "This [Quran] is but an obvious magic."
16. "In case we die and become dust and bones, shall we be then brought forth [alive out of our graves!?]"
17. "And our fathers, the old?"
18. Say: "Yes, and you then will be humiliated."
19. It is only one shout [of the angel of death], when then they will be awaiting [the judgment and the punishment.]
20. And they [will] say: "Woe to us! This is the Day of Judgment."
21. [Then the angels will say to them:] "This is the Day of Decision that you unbelieved [during the life of the World.]
22. [Then God will say to the angels:] "Bring up those who wronged [their people] together with their wives [: the associaters] and [the devils] that they served [in the world of souls],"
23. "Apart from God, and direct them to the path of Hell."
24. "And stop them; for they are to be questioned [concerning their followers.]"
25. [It will be said to them in rebuke:] "What ails you that you help not one another!?"
26. No, indeed; but today they resign themselves in submission [to the doom.]
27. And they [will] come together asking each other.
28. [The followers will] say [to the leaders]: "You came to us [with deception, and promising us] with prosperity."
29. [The leaders will] say [to the followers]: "But it was you who were not believers [even before we had spoken to you.]"
30. We had no authority over you; no, you were an arrogant people."
31. So the word of our Lord has now been fulfilled against us; and surely we are about to suffer [the doom.]"
32. "Therefore, we perverted you, for we [ourselves] were perverters."
33. Truly, that day, they will [all] share in the doom.
34. As such shall We deal [in the future] with the sinners [among your nation, O Mohammed.]
35. [For] they were ever waxing proud, when it was said to them: "No god but God!"
36. And they said: "Shall we forsake our gods merely for the saying of a poet [that is] possessed?"
37. [So God replied:] No indeed; but he came with the truth, and confirmed those [apostles] sent [before him.]
38. Now certainly you [: associaters] are going to suffer the painful doom.
39. And you are not going to be requited but according to what you did.
40. But not the servants of God: those being devoted [to worship Him alone.]
41. Such [devoted servants] will have [in Paradise] a stated provision:
42. [Of] fruits, and they shall be honored,
43. In the paradises of prosperity.
44. [Reclining] on couches; [and] facing one another.
45. The cup from a flowing spring being passed round to them.
46. Whitish and delicious to the drinkers.
47. Wherein no sickness is, neither will they turn away dispersing therefrom.
48. And with them [damsels], restraining their looks, large eyed.
49. [And who are transparent souls] as if they are concealed pure eggs.
50. And they will come together asking each other.
