Conservative provocateur Ezra Levant says he won’t tell people attending an anti-carbon tax rally in Calgary on Sunday what they can chant, despite the controversy over cries of “lock her up” aimed at Premier Rachel Notley at last weekend’s event in Edmonton.

The legislature rally organized by Levant’s Rebel Media attracted national attention — and the condemnation of politicians on both the left and the right — when the crowd of about 1,500 people briefly chanted “lock her up” in reference to Notley, echoing a call aimed at Hillary Clinton by crowds at Donald Trump rallies during the U.S. presidential election campaign.

The advisory for the Rebel’s Calgary event to be held at the Westin Calgary hotel says it will begin with the master of ceremonies opening with comments about chanting.

Asked in an interview Thursday if the “lock her up” chant would be discouraged or encouraged, Levant replied that “you better get a good seat if you want an answer to that question.”

However, asked further about the possibility of a repeat of the refrain, Levant said, “I don’t tell voters and citizens what they can and can’t say.”

“I’ll let unemployed Albertans say whatever they want,” he said.

The chant, along with some homophobic signs in the crowd, were criticized by a number of conservative politicians, including Wildrose Leader Brian Jean, who spoke at the rally but left before the “lock her up” comments were made.

Progressive Conservative leadership candidate Jason Kenney, interim federal Conservative Leader Rona Ambrose and federal Tory leadership candidate Chris Alexander, who was speaking at the rally when the chant broke out, also denounced the call.

On his Internet program, Levant lashed his conservative critics, accusing them of throwing the rally attendees under the bus and suggesting they should instead tell the “media-political-industrial complex to f— off.”

Nevertheless, Levant said in his interview he had invited Jean, Kenney, interim PC Leader Ric McIver, the federal Conservative leadership candidates and others to Sunday’s rally.

Kenney’s campaign said he has a prior engagement in Edmonton. The Wildrose caucus said Jean has a family commitment but he has asked MLAs Derek Fildebrandt and Leela Aheer to attend on his behalf. A Tory representative said McIver had not decided yet whether to attend.

Federal Conservative leadership candidate Brad Trost, who has spoken approvingly of the “lock her up” chant, is also slated to speak at the Calgary event.

Hehehehe...1500 people at an anti-carbon tax rally in Alberta. There are a few possible explanations for such a pisspoor turnout. Make no mistake, the carbon tax is not popular so either, people don't want to be associated with rebel or they can't be bothered to rally as they are smart enough to see that they don't make a difference. Personally I think it was a bit of both

They're still not blaming Saudi Arabia for flooding the market with Oil that caused the price drop. To be equating the not yet in force Carbon Tax with their unemployment tells me Alberta needs more funding for the special needs citizens.......

More and more Albertans couldn't care less about Notley's opinions. We are just counting the days til we get to punt her.

Entertainment at the least
I encourage all who take their share I n the opportunity of free speech to latch onto the Conservatives or Wildrose Parties,I may even embellish the motion and encouragement by different means,I embrace the union of like minded thinkers because I can't stand the thought of these hello yesterday free speechers being in my nest of political ideologies, also within the ideologies is disrespect for the laws of this great land Canada!some free speechers think they are more powerful then the Supreme Court, been here before.
Imagine if we could not identify these creepy people with powerful creepy thoughts, how frightening is that
I live amongst hello yesterday creepy people, these people are fed these ideologies by party
Policies,mainly the Conservative party ideologies
This is good these people show up at rallies

Funny you would say this as I look upon some of the behaviour at rallies and otherwise it is like watching cage fighting, that I am looking at some strange behaviour,I feel like I am watching something which is beyond and not real for me,I think is this acting for the likes of Erza!
I have many extreme right wing thinkers upon me,I really dwelled on these ideologies, where they come from
As far back as I could go it was evident politics and acting has generated response of Albertans, written like a script with certainty to generate a response
Is Erza really what he is or is he flocking ideologies and profiting off them?
These are questions I dwell in
Conservative s have played Albertans while robbing them since the beginning of time

The strange thing with "the rebels" followers, they get mad if you even dwell into their thinking of politics
Dam right pissed off if you defend your ideologies,
One of my good friends is a rebel ticket holder,I thought it was hockey,no the VIP list , we frequently avoid discussion of politics, the discussion becomes aggressive,I cower,I am s romantic Liberal
I question if actors belong or go to these events of the rebels,my friend tells me about these events and the different questions etc
Does Erza hire?
Now there are tag teams going on in Politics, strategic harassment, multiples going for the same outcome, with making the complaint and the complainers looking like babies in the end,
this is scary
Aggression is fair game in Rural and otherwise politics in Alberta

you announced to us all that you were leaving CC.
