New-home sales see biggest jump in 47 years

Sales surge 27 percent, the strongest month since July

New-home sales see biggest jump in 47 years - Real estate- msnbc.com

"Sales of new homes surged 27 percent last month, bouncing off the previous month's record low and blowing past expectations as government incentives and better weather boosted sales.
The Commerce Department said Friday that new-home sales rose in March to a seasonally adjusted annual sales pace of 411,000. It was the strongest month since last July and the biggest monthly increase in 47 years. "

Naturally, we should all be thanking the Republicans for that. :lol:

Let me take the approach that His Highness, the All-Knowing oracle, SirJosephPorter uses time after time: denigrate the source of the information.

MSNBC is nothing but a rat's nest of the most vile and hateful liberal Democrats. The results of their polls or "news reporting" is not worth considering as valid.

No danger of that, JLM.

If I were as closeminded as His Highness, I simply would have said what he usually does: utter, complete and unthinking dismissal of any and all opinions that do not agree with Him.

What Democrats Think of the American People

Not much.

BY William Kristol

March 16, 2010 11:40 PM

Democratic leaders in the House are apparently moving towards the "Slaughter Solution" of avoiding a direct vote on the health care legislation and instead passing the Senate health care bill by voting to "deem" it passed. As they do so, they keep reassuring the media--and each other--that the American people don't care.

A memo from a top aide to Maryland Democrat Chris Van Hollen late last week counseled other Democratic staffers to tell their bosses not to worry, that "things like reconciliation and what the rules committee does is INSIDE BASEBALL." Yesterday House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer told reporters, "I don't think any American...is going to make the distinction" between the Slaughter procedure and a straightforward vote on the legislation. "Process is interesting, particularly to all of us around this room. But in the final analysis, what is interesting to the American public is what does this bill do for them and their families."

In other words: the American public doesn't care about how our representatives govern us--which is to say, about how we govern ourselves. Whether Congress follows its rules, whether there is democratic accountability, whether there is constitutional probity--none of this matters according to Hoyer. Rather, the self-centered and self-concerned American people only care about the (alleged) results of the legislation.

Here the Democrats betray their contempt for the supposed simple-mindedness and short-sightedness of the American public. They also convey their vision of the American people living under the big government liberalism: We are to be passive consumers of government action, who accept what is done for us and to us in light of our perceived narrow short-term self-interest. We are not to think of ourselves as self-governing citizens with a stake in the process of constitutional self-government and a concern for the good of the whole.

This may be the outcome--turning citizens into consumers, self-government into the nanny state--that the Democrats would like to achieve. I don't think it's one the American people wish to accept.

I have no reason to doubt the National Enquirer. After all, they are nominated for a Pultzer for disclosing one of the greatest hypocrites of history, John Edwards.

Having said that, can you blame the President? Seeing what he is condemned to stay true and faithful to?

Buffett On U.S. Economy: 'Significant Improvement'

Buffett On U.S. Economy: 'Significant Improvement' | iStockAnalyst.com

Over the weekend, Warren Buffett, was reported to say that the economy is showing significant improvement for the first time since the financial crisis of 2008 and 2009.
There is "significant improvement" at Berkshire's industrial units, including Marmon and metalworking company Iscar, he said Sunday, expanding on comments he made a day earlier at his company's annual shareholder meeting in Omaha.

Buffett's comments come on the heals of a Friday report that showed the U.S. economy has expanded for three quarters in a row. The Commerce Department said that preliminary measures showed the economy grew at an annual rate of 3.2%, helped along by consumer spending. And the evidence is now clear that new jobs will follow. And at a faster rate than in any recovery in recent memory.

The shift in employment activity is most apparent in job postings, which have begun to surge. Indeed.com, which collects job listings from thousands of sources, reported a 19 percent increase in postings in March, versus the same month last year.

Buffett controlled firms are also hiring again and he expects U.S. unemployment will now continue to fall as the economy improves.

"American business is improving, from everything I see now," he said. "At what rate unemployment will fall, I don't know, but it will fall."

Since the beginning of the year the U.S. economy has started to create more jobs than it is losing. Several reports due out this week will underscore those measurements. Most economists now agree that the largest economy in the world is now netting between 200,000 and 500,000 jobs monthly.

An improvement we did not have under Bush!

''Service Industries in U.S. Probably Expanded at Fastest Pace in Four Years"

Service Industries in U.S. Probably Expanded at Fastest Pace in Four Years - Bloomberg

Service industries probably expanded in April at the fastest pace in almost four years, showing the U.S. recovery is broadening, economists said before reports today.
The Institute for Supply Management’s index of non- manufacturing businesses, covering almost 90 percent of the economy, rose to 56, the highest level since May 2006, according to the median forecast of 76 economists surveyed by Bloomberg News. Another report may show companies added jobs in April.
“The economy really is humming along,” said Zach Pandl, an economist at Nomura Securities International Inc. in New York. “There are much fewer pockets of weakness. A hiring recovery should not be far behind.”
Growing employment may help sustain the rebound in consumer spending that is lifting companies from MasterCard Inc. to railroads owned by Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway Inc. Manufacturing isn’t the only area that will benefit from the global economic rebound as businesses like United Parcel Service Inc. also see sales rising even faster overseas.
The Tempe, Arizona-based ISM’s figures are due at 10 a.m. New York time. Estimates in the Bloomberg News survey ranged from 53.7 to 57.2. Readings above 50 signal expansion.
A report from ADP Employer Services due at 8:15 a.m. may show businesses added 30,000 jobs in April, the data’s first gain since January 2008.
Jobs Outlook
Economists forecast a Labor Department report May 7 will show the U.S. added 189,000 jobs in April and the unemployment rate held at 9.7 percent, according to the median projection in a Bloomberg News survey. The ADP report doesn’t include government jobs, meaning it will not pick up a projected jump in federal hiring of temporary workers to conduct the census.
More jobs will probably lead to more spending. Consumer purchases in the U.S. rose 0.6 percent in March, the most in five months, the Commerce Department said May 3. Incomes rose for the first time this year, the report showed.
As demand has risen, investors are gaining more confidence in retail companies. The Standard & Poor’s Supercomposite Retailing Index has climbed 15 percent this year, almost three times the 5.2 increase of the broader S&P 500 Index.
MasterCard, the world’s second-biggest electronic payments network, posted a first-quarter profit that beat most analysts’ estimates as consumer spending rebounded and expenses were held in check. A slide in U.S. credit-card spending, which fell 3.1 percent to $110 billion, may have reversed toward the end of the quarter, according to outgoing Chief Executive Officer Robert W. Selander.
April Gains
“During the month of March, we saw positive growth in processed U.S. credit volume for the first time in approximately 18 months,” Selander said in a conference call with analysts yesterday. “This trend continued through the first four weeks of April.”
Buffett acquired Fort Worth, Texas-based Burlington Northern Santa Fe Corp. in February as an “all-in wager” on the U.S. economy, the 79 year-old investor said at a May 2 press conference.
“American business is improving from everything I can see,” he said.
Berkshire, which cut more than 20,000 jobs last year, is adding staff as the recovering economy boosts demand at its industrial units, Buffett said.
Other companies are benefiting from the rebound in international sales.
UPS, the world’s largest package-delivery company, last month posted first-quarter sales that beat analysts’ estimates on increased demand overseas. The company had an 18 percent increase in international packages, while U.S. shipments rose 0.4 percent, which was the first gain in more than two years. Retail, health-care and technology demand helped boost domestic volumes, Chief Financial Officer Kurt Kuehn said in an interview on April 27.

Manufacturing last month expanded at the fastest pace since 2004, according to the ISM’s factory survey issued this week.

Thank you President Obama!

Factory Orders Rise, Sales Jump Most in Two Years

Factory Orders Rise, Sales Jump Most in Two Years - Bloomberg

Orders placed with U.S. factories unexpectedly rose in March, propelled by demand for capital equipment and petroleum that signals the U.S. expansion gained speed at the end of the first quarter.
The 1.3 percent increase in bookings matched the prior month’s gain, which was more than twice as large as previously estimated, the Commerce Department said today in Washington. Sales climbed 2.2 percent, the most since November 2007.
Texas Instruments Inc. and Caterpillar Inc. are among companies ramping up output to meet rising foreign and domestic demand as the global economy rebounds from last year’s recession. Inventory replenishment and more jobs in the U.S. may prompt factories to keep boosting output in coming months.
“A lot of manufacturers may be struggling to keep up with demand,” Russell Price, a senior economist at Ameriprise Financial Inc. in Detroit, said before the report. “We’re seeing clear demand improvements from both consumers and businesses that should provide a strong tailwind for several months at least.”
Pending sales of previously owned houses increased 5.3 percent in March, a report from the National Association of Realtors also showed today. Buyers are rushing to beat a June 30 deadline for closing on deals in order to receive up to $8,000 in government tax credits.
Total factory orders were forecast to be little changed after a previously reported 0.6 percent gain the prior month, according to the median forecast of 67 economists surveyed by Bloomberg News. Projections ranged from a drop of 1 percent to an increase of 1 percent.
Excluding Transportation
Orders excluding volatile transportation goods, such as aircraft, jumped 3.1 percent, the most since August 2005.
Demand for durable goods, which make up just over half of total factory demand, decreased 0.6 percent, depressed by a 67 percent slump in orders for civilian aircraft.
Bookings for non-durable goods, including food, petroleum and chemicals, increased 2.9 percent, led by a 7.5 percent gain at petroleum refineries. The average price for a barrel of crude oil traded on the New York Mercantile Exchange rose to $81.29 in March from $76.45 in February.
Bookings for capital goods excluding aircraft and military equipment, a measure of future business investment, increased 4.5 percent, more than estimated last week in the government’s report on durable goods. Shipments of those goods, used to calculate gross domestic product, rose 2.3 percent, also more than estimated last week.
Business Investment
Flush with profits, businesses are spending more on equipment. Business investment rose at a 13 percent annual rate in the first quarter after a 19 percent surge at the end of 2009, the government reported last week.
Texas Instruments Inc., the second-largest U.S. chipmaker, posted a 54 percent gain in first quarter sales and predicted second-quarter sales and profits that topped analysts’ estimates, helped by demand for semiconductors used in industrial machinery, phone networks and cars.
“Our production output is at an all-time high, and we have a multi-year ramp in capacity under way that will allow us to support our customers,” Chief Financial Officer Kevin March said in a conference call on April 26.
Caterpillar Inc. is seeing surging orders from abroad. Its industrial machinery sales to Asia-Pacific soared 40 percent while shipments to Latin America rose 7 percent and North America sales fell 15 percent in the first quarter, the company reported last month.
‘Good Bounce’
“We’re seeing a pretty good bounce in investor confidence around the world in terms of our customers, particularly those in the emerging-market theaters around the world,” Caterpillar Chief Executive Officer Jim Owens said in a Bloomberg Television Interview on April 26.
Factory inventories climbed 0.3 percent after a 0.7 percent gain the prior month that was larger than previously estimated. Manufacturers had enough goods on hand to last 1.27 months at the current sales pace, the fewest since August 2008.
Exports rose in February to the highest level since October 2008, the Commerce Department reported last month. Manufacturing last month expanded at the fastest pace since 2004, according to a national survey of purchasing managers yesterday.

THANK GOD FOR THE PRESIDENT!

Excellent piece of writing! This lady does have a point that perhaps most have not considered. Destruction from within....

From an 82 year old widow in Greenville , SC .......
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
That is right - I will say it , THANK GOD FOR THE PRESIDENT! WHY?
1. He destroyed the Clinton Political Machine - Driving a stake thru the heart of Hillary's Presidential aspirations - something no Republican was ever able to do. Remember when a Hillary Presidency scared the daylights out of you!
2. He killed off the Kennedy Dynasty - No more Kennedy's trolling Washington looking for booze and women wanting > rides home. American women and Freedom are safer tonight!
3. He is destroying the Democratic Party before our eyes!
Dennis Moore had never lost a race - quit
Evan Bayh had never lost a race - quit
Byron Dorgan - had never lost a race - quit
Harry Reid - Soon to be GONE
These are just a handful of the Democrats that whose political careers Obama has destroyed! By the end of 2010 dozens more will be! In December of 2008 the Democrats were on the rise. In the last two election cycles they had picked up
14 senate seats and 52 house seats.
The press was touting the death of the Conservative Movement and the Republican Party. In just one year, Obama put a stop to all of this and will probably give the house, if not the senate back to the Republicans.
4. He has completely exposed liberals and progressives for what they are.
Every Generation seems to need to relearn the lesson on why they should never actually put liberals in charge.
He is bringing home the lesson very well!
Liberals tax, borrow and spend - check
Liberals won't bring themselves to protect America - check
Liberals want to take over the economy - check
Liberals think they know what is best for everyone - check
Liberals aren't happy till they are running YOUR life - check
5. He has brought more Americans back to conservatism than anyone since Reagan. In One year he rejuvenated the Conservative movement and brought out to the streets millions of Freedom Loving Americans.
Name me one other time in your life that you saw your friends and neighbors this interested in taking back America !
6. His amazing leadership has sparked the greatest period of sales of firearms and ammunition this country has seen. Law abiding citizens have rallied and have provided a "stimulus" to the sporting goods field while other industries have failed, faded, or moved off-shore!
7. In all honesty one year ago I was more afraid than I had ever been in my life. Not of the economy but of the direction our country was going.
I thought Americans had forgotten what this country was all about. My neighbors, friends, strangers proved to me that my lack of confidence of the Greatness and Wisdom of the American people was flat out wrong.
8. When the American People wake up no smooth talking teleprompter reader can fool them!
Barak Obama woke up these Great Americans!
Again I want say Thank you Barak Obama!
EDITORIAL: Obama's invisible Islam
http://ad.doubleclick.net/click;h=v...://www.washingtontimes.com/cashback-shopping/
THE WASHINGTON TIMES
During questioning before the House Judiciary Committee on Thursday, a visibly nervous Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr. tried valiantly not to utter the expression "radical Islam." The twisting began when Rep. Lamar Smith, Texas Republican, asked whether the men behind three recent terrorist incidents - the Fort Hood massacre, the Christmas Day bombing attempt and the Time Square bombing attempt - "might have been incited to take the actions that they did because of radical Islam."
Mr. Holder said there are a "variety of reasons" why people commit terror attacks. That can be true, but in these cases there was one reason: radical Islam. The attorney general said you have to look at each case individually. That's fine, but when that is done, one comes face to face with radical Islam every time. He said that of the variety of reasons people might commit terror, "some of them are potentially religious." Yes, like radical Islam. When pressed, what Mr. Holder would finally allow is, "I certainly think that it's possible that people who espouse a radical version of Islam have had an ability to have an impact on people like [Times Square bomber Faisal] Shahzad."
Mr. Holder mentioned Anwar al-Awlaki, the U.S.-born radical cleric now holed up in Yemen who has been mentioned in connection with all three attacks. Mr. Holder said that Mr. al-Awlaki "has a version of Islam that is not consistent with the teachings of [the faith]." Mr. Holder did not go into details to back up his assertion that Mr. al-Awlaki, an Islamic scholar, is somehow at odds with his own faith, nor did he pinpoint exactly what Muslim teachings he was referring to.
The Obama administration seems to have issued an internal gag order that forbids any official statements that might cast even the most extreme interpretations of the Islamic religion in a negative light. The "force protection review" of the Fort Hood massacre omitted any mention of shooter Nidal Malik Hasan's openly radical Islamic worldview or the fact that he made the jihadist war cry "Allahu Akbar!" before opening fire. Initially, the Obama administration refused to even call the massacre an act of terrorism, much less radical Islamic terrorism.
Last year, the Department of Homeland Security Domestic Extremist Lexicon, which was pulled out of circulation in the wake of controversy with other department publications, listed Jewish extremism and various forms of Christian extremism as threats but made no mention of any form of Muslim extremism. The Feb. 1, 2010 Quadrennial Homeland Security Review discusses terrorism and violent extremism but does not mention radical Islam as a motivator, or in any context. The 2010 Quadrennial Defense Review likewise avoids any terminology related to Islam.
The Obama administration may not like to think of being at war with radical Islam, but the jihadists are definitely at war with the United States. Rather than running from the expression "radical Islam," the administration should be openly discussing the ideological motives of the terrorists and finding ways to delegitimize them. Instead of hedging, obfuscating and ignoring, these Democrats should confront the challenge frankly, openly and honestly. Pretending that a radical, violent strain of Islam does not exist will not make it go away. To the contrary, it will make the situation much worse.
President Obama's continuing solicitude toward the faith of Muhammad is inexplicable, and as these acts of denial continue, it is becoming dangerous. The United States will not defeat an enemy it is afraid to identify.
Actually, gopher, since November 2008, it more like thank Obama for everything good and blame Bush for everything bad.
Right from the very mouths of The Annointed One and His slavish and slobbering acolytes.
