I have lived in Quebec for four years now....the idiots that live here.....take it in the butt constantly by the government and do nothing about it. Highest taxes....worst roads...worst healthcare....laziest people in the world....

I am moving to T.O. which I don't necessarily like but to make a life here is impossible. I moved from Nova Scotia to Montreal because I remembered visiting here some time ago and enjoyed it. The culture....the old buildings...the fun lifestyle.

Word to the wise.....if you like a place....don't move there.

I despise quebec now....whiners that have nothing to do other than protest everyday and the cops partition the streets and block the streets for hours (only time you can find a cop) so people can't get home in the traffic so a bunch of students can protest their tuition. Try being from another country where those out of country students are paying 10 times as much to take the same courses and never bitch about it. Happy to just have an education. Never enough. The habs are the only NHL team to have to pay to play. They have to pay the Bell Centre annually...huge amounts of money...to play there. The Olympic Stadium committe and the city of Montreal passed down an architect from the U.S. to build the stadium in order to give it to a frenchman in Quebec and was an architectural nightmare. It was just finished being paid off and will be torn down soon. Contractors that are normally hired through the Quebec usual practice of nepotism.....are screwing the system (example....building a metro....many are paid by the truckload of dirt that they are leaving the site with in order to dump....they are coming in and out of the site with the same truckload and multiplying their $$...btw...that is from a friend that works on the site that says it is common practice).
Healthcare.....hospitals, save two, are ratty and covered in dust, cracks in the plaster....etc. My girlfriend was diagnosed with MS and had to spend a week laying on a gurney in a high traffic area hallway of the hospital with people puking and coughing all around her....and a kid with cancer laying on a gurney across from her....poor kid had to spend some precious days laying in a hallway.

So, anyone that says that Quebec is charming is full of crap.....it is "quaint stupidity". This place is one of the last places to do business in all of North America because businesses hire based on knowing french rather than skill or education. You can have a master's degree and be passed up by some redneck that only speaks french with little education.

Prince Edward Island (a fact) spends more money on their police and crime control than all of quebec. Little tiny P.E.I.

Anyone that wants to praise Quebec.....either has never spent any real time here or has spend every moment here and doesnt know any better.

I live in quebec/montreal, and i can tell you it is the best place, i ever seen in the world, why?? because it is the only place, where people speaks english and french, mix with multicultural, just like toronto is( smaller yes).

Worst road, yes, higher taxes, yes, but to live in quebec, it cost you about half of the money than the rest of canada, schools are cheaper, rent are cheaper than most of canada, lazy, my ass, this is an opinion based on nothing at all.

What the hell you guys have to say about those who protest?? why english peoples has problem with that?? protesting is a basic right in democracy .

You are disillusioned.....Quebec has the highest taxes in all of North America....and then Tremblay wants to tax the public more to pay for the roads that we already pay too much to fix. The ignorance here is insane....I went to Calgary to visit friends and it was nice to see road signs and establishment signs that didnt basically threaten you. Any service provider or company that provides a service only does so when it is convenient for the employee....certainly not that "can do" attitude. You know it to be true. Either that or you have not been to other places. This place is ridiculous! Where does that 30% of my income go to???
the language police??

I worked at an establishment where a couple came in and when I didnt know what Cote Levees meant......they threatened to call the Alliance Francaise!! WTF!? Everything is backwards here and to a large degree.....third world in its approach to healthcare or services. Christ! most businesses in downtown "world class" Montreal only accept cash. We have pretty old buildings and is the "redlight" district of Canada and the "smoking section" of Canada but what else have you got? I could regale story after story and it would never be enough. My father is packing up his two companies and leaving for Ontario. I decided to leave also. this place is retarded and the people that live here don't know any better. I couldnt give a shit about language....that doesnt even enter into the basis of what I am saying....it is the "oops its 5pm....time to get out of here" type of mentality.....leaving work behind regardless of what is on the table or on the line......
You can't get anything from any service unless you are not inconveniencing the employee.

quebec, does indeed, suck. too bad....I was really liking this place in the first year...but then I realized that there is no life here.

too bad that protesting is a basic right of democracy...
so is not being stuck in traffic for four hours while the protesters throw rocks at the police like we live in Belfast.
what right do those people have? I say give them a field out in the west island or on the south shore or north laval to protest all they want....they can scream their heads off and not disrupt daily life.

Trucker magazine says that Montreal roads are the worst in North America. They should know. T.O. has 14 lane roads...the most you see in Montreal is 8. Great city engineering! Brilliant!!
No wonder why traffic always sucks and noone has any idea on how to fix it or the ambition to do so. No ambition anywhere in this city other than buying sharp suits and sunglasses.

MickSandy, you are full of it... that smelly brown stuff...

Seriously, you've got personal emotional issues to deal with because Montreal simply is a decent place to live which compares to any North American city.

"To make a life here is impossible"

You just sound like a whiney little prince (or princess) who had daddy pay for everything. Every city has its beautiful and ugly sides; if you can't see any of the nice stuff here than the city will be better off without you. Stop shitting on the rest of the world and be constructive...

You mean the brown smelly stuff I walk in everyday on the sidewalks because people here don't care enough to take care of their dogshit?

I had noone pay for anything ever for me. I left my poor family when I was 17 and moved to Halifax where I enjoyed a great quality of life among hard working people and then when I decided to move to try to ascend a ladder of success that Halifax couldnt offer because of it's size....I decided to forego the usual Vancouver, Calgary and Toronto....and try a challenge and go to Montreal...but regret it now. LIke I said....if you lived anywhere other than Quebec....for a period of time...you would understand the difference. Canada is an extreme dichotemy. Quebec shits on it's citizens. The government doesnt care about it's citizens. It's businesses don't care. Where does all the money go? I moved up the ranks to work as a director with an American company here and it is like a New York in the middle of Somalia. Women expect the door to open for them, yet would rather slam it in your face than hold it for someone else (not to mention that women have this thing against walking on escalators here...still can't figure that one out). The roads are broken up and never fixed....the city constantly and annually raise metro and transit fares and parking meter prices. Cops are never around....especially when the cars are whizzing by you when you try to cross at a cross walk (isnt that illegal in all parts of the world??) but noone stops them. There is a lawlessness here that doesnt protect anyone.
My favorite of the day is that anywhere in english canada, when you call a company, you get ..."please dial one for english and two for french"....HERE....it is ..."please dial one for french and NINE!! for english.....THAT is spite!!! lolol....couldnt get any number further away??...LMAO!!

OK, I believe you are a decent person. Sorry for my bitter remarks. Just too bad you feel that way about Quebec. I really don't think it's as bad as you picture it out to be. There are indeed differences between French and English Canada. I spent my childhood summers in Nova Scotia (near Pictou County) and I know people are a LOT more polite over there than here in Quebec. People here can be a bit rude from an outsiders point of view but be careful not to make any generalizations. Different cultures react differently. There's more latin blood in Quebec and latin blood is a bit hotter if you see what I mean. From our point of view, ROCers can appear cold and boring because they are not as expressive... With a little effort, I'm sure you can find some nice sides to this part of Canada. If not, you should indeed live somewhere else!

Just today, I had to call Revenu Québec and the FIRST thing they told me was to press 1 for English...

I like the Habs too of course (2-0!!!)... but am nostalgic of the Nordiques because I come from Quebec City... The rivalry was so fun...

Peace,

Peace,

it is funny.....my father told me "Mike, you had such a spirit when you lived in NS....you were the most happy, tailwaggin guy in the world and you have become bitter.."...I think that stems mostly from the fact that I came here to succeed and can't even get a job that pays me a decent salary because my french is marginal.....actually very good for someone living here for four years.....but not good enough for a good job. I had two close calls with amazing opportunities only to find out that I lost them because my french wasnt good enough to even get an interview....so now I work in a company that pays me crap because I can only work with American companies....hence....my immigration to crappy T.O. (sorry T.O. people but I spent my childhood there and I, believe it or not, love many little things about Montreal that I now consider it home (Ironic, huh?) like the habs and the smoked meat and the cabane a sucre....

But I get so steamed at the taxes and the lack of service....maybe cuz I am english.....who knows. All my friends are hard core french and they agree with my rants about the city to a huge degree. They can't stand the roads and taxes and all that.....I mean, that is a huge part of someone's life....when a gov't takes 30% of your income....and you feel like you get nothing back in return other than bein snubbed for opportunity.

I was in court last week (nothing serious) and the judge only spoke french and had to have a court clerk translate in choppy english for me....I mean....I was trying to defend a chunk of my income from a lawsuit (that is a whole other story that I won't go into) and it was important that all communication lines were clear of any mistranslation...and I will never know if it was.

anyway, I won't rant anymore....
just wanted to clear my newly found anger.

Well then , leave, and go somewhere else, that is the only alternative for you, but you cant argue the fact to live in quebec, it is cheaper , rent are cheaper, to go to school is also cheaper.

I have friends in to, that are earning twice my salarie, still they have to work more than i do to pay everything they need.

I am sorry but that is, in fact, untrue. It is the highest taxes in all of North America and if you want to live out in the boonies, then you can get a great rent. My girlfriend's mother owns 6 properties around Montreal and some in Laval and in Laval, alone, it is 600 for a two bedroom and it is in the middle of nowhere.
I pay 700 dollars for a tiny apartment near atwater that has one bedroom. Rent in montreal is on par with most major cities yet it has an identity crisis...I am not trying to be a dick but you are being very typical when you ignore all the problems. That is how nothing gets done. If you are fluently bilingual.....then you can make pretty good money...if you aren't (and being a Canadian in Canada) which I have the right to be or not be.....I can't get a single decent job. If you have no education or no skill or no experience....it is ok...as long as you know french compared to the skilled, educated and/or experienced person that DOES not have french. That is what kills business in the long run and ruins economies. The language of business, worldwide, is english and most business people in montreal don't speak english or if they do....they don't know it well.

It is no use pointing out the problems to you or anyone that is french because Quebecoise will always defend to the death the inadequacies in the province outright ...as opposed to solving those problems which never happens.

Oh, and if you read the posts above...you will note that I am, in fact, leaving the province....
I am not one to bitch about my living conditions and stay.....I am not from here.....

Oh and it doesnt matter what anyone says.....because

lol Mick, where are you moving? Have you picked a province yet? I'm just being nosey.

William Faulkner...well done..

Moving to Ontario.

.....I have been to Iceland, Jamaica, France, England, California, Georgia, Michigan, Florida, New York, Connecticut, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Vermont, Maine and in every province in Canada....and always thought that Montreal was my favorite city above any I have visited but living here has become a different matter.....so, even though I don't care too much for Ontario and Toronto....it is the place that is closest to home while still being able to give me a shot at being successful.
I will be the biggest Habs fan in T.O.
Watch for the guy in the Habs Jersey freakin out in the stands at the Air Canada Center during a habs/leafs game....that will be me.

I took a course at McGill but I learned more french watching RDS and reading french papers...which I do a lot. I know a lot of french..I understand 99% of it but returning a sentence and putting it together properly is my problem. I have been told that I am functionally bilingual, however not fluent enough to take on a high paying position. Yes, I am educated and Canadian....with the french that I have....I could be a huge asset to a company outside of quebec. Just not enough for here. I find that courses in french don't teach you as well as pushing it day to day in the public, reading, listening etc. That is the learning arena, not courses..the course I took at McGill taught me nothing.

Micksandy it sounds like what you need is practice. I’ve learned a number of romance languages including French as I studied that in school. In general I have found that it is very hard to get one’s conversation skills up to a high standard in a city as the opportunity to practice is not there. This applies to any city I have found. Try learning Spanish in Bogota as the Columbians are perfectionists and cringe at any mispronunciation or grammatical error. Paris is similar as is Madrid.

You need to take a sabbatical and go outside the city for a month or two. In the villages there is more flexibility, patience and tolerance for mistakes. Locate a café and you will find elderly men. Make their acquaintance and tell them you would like to talk with them to improve your French and to get to know Quebec. Walk the village and get to know the people and practice, practice and more practice. Go to the café each day. What will happen very quickly is your French will improve and you will get a very different perspective on the people in Quebec. From your comments it is apparent that you do not really know Quebec because you have not engaged the people. You need to talk to the people to understand them and this exercise will improve your French so you may compete for your dream job.

To me right now Montreal is one of the great cities. And I’ve lived all over the world and so do have a basis for comparison. We have friends who are going to Buenos Aires and my wife researched going there for the summer as well as to Barcelona. We also thought about spending the summer in New York. In the end we decided to go back to Montreal.

One can find all of the negatives you describe in any city. I remember when New York had potholes bigger than my car. And you also have to remember that language skills may be secondary to networking in getting a job. Last year we had a place in the Plateau and I met an American who had no French skills and he had a renovation business that was a booming success.

All I am saying is that....it is the only province with the motto...

"Adapt and assimilate or get out"

We don't do this to immigrants from other countries...why must we do this to fellow Canadians that move here? It is certainly the message that it seems to send to Anglophones that move here.
Anyway, I am done with the thread. I understand that there are varying opinions.
