The world’s oldest profession wants modern work rights. Prostitutes are demanding a recognised status similar to other self-employed workers, with access to a pension scheme and normal benefits. They also want the distinction made clearer between consented prostitution and trafficking.
Nikita, a transvestite prostitute (pictured left), told French News, “Most people working in the sex trade have chosen this career and are proud of what they do.” A founder member of Les Putes, he hopes to end ‘putophobia’, arguing that sex work is an occupation like any other, except it’s prone to stigmatisation and social exclusion. “Benefiting financially from the earnings of a sex worker – pimping – is illegal in France. Landlords can be punished if they rent to a prostitute. Some unscrupulous ones, aware of this, exploit prostitutes by charging way above market rents.”
The girls working from vans in the Bois de Vincennes in Paris face new challenges from local police. Since Nicolas Sarkozy’s controversial bill three years ago making soliciting a crime, they are liable to huge fines. “In addition to doing a very tiring job, they’re subjected now to frequent police harassment and not given support if they’re victims of violence,” said Nikita, who also accuses the police of bribing the girls. Nikita is determined that the conditions of this often ‘invisible’ occupation is brought to the public’s notice.
François Gil from Droits des Femmes, Femmes des Droits, an association which campaigns for women’s rights, says: “All the girls from the Bois de Vincennes want to do is get on with their jobs.”

I think prostitution should be legalized. Not a popular view among feminists like myself, but I don't see any other reasonable alternative.

I agree Tracy it should be legalized, it's time we stopped judging sex workers. Of course I'm not talking about children in the sex trade or those who are forced into prostitution.

I dont see how legalizing prostitution would get rid of pimps and forced prostitution. Most of them dont want to be in the business. In Canada we have alot of women from poor countries brought over here with the promise of work. Then there passports are taken from them and they are forced into it, often raped and beaten. How is legalizing it going to stop that?

By legalizing it they can have a registered business in an environment which they can control. Why would a John go on the dirty street to find it when he could go to a building like the burlesque house on the Simpsons?

Because, sometimes Johns want younger girls and like to beat up women. And whenever there is a demand for that kind of stuff there will be pimps forcing women into it. It's very sad.

Regardless of whethor or not it is legal, there will be sickos out there. The point is if it is legitimate, the women can have their own businesses, not be afraid of calling the cops, and work in a safer environment.

My point is if you legalize it, there will still be pimps and women raped and beaten. Whats to stop a pimp from forcing a women into a legal organization, then take her money? How will making it legal make it easier to go to cops? How will having legal prostitution do away with illegal prostitution, gangs, and johns beating up women? I'm not for or against legalizing prostitution, i just want to know how legalizing it would make it safer for women. So far, i dont see how it could.

As it is now, prostitution is illegal. It can be managed when it is legal. It would be in a safe environemnt. I'm sure that they would have some OHS codes to follow. They would not be strong armed by pimps or crime organizations.

Keeping prostitution illegal makes the women attractive targets for robbery, fraud and rape. Making it legal would legitimize these women, and they would not have to fear any longer, no more than you or I fear organized crime.

Just really think about this: Do criminals go to the cops when they have problems? Of course not, those types of people are dealt with in their respective criminal circles. If on the other hand you are working within the norms of society and you have a problem, you are more likely to go to the cops are you not?

Maybe. However, women are abused in marriages, and alot of the time they dont report that. How many rapes are reported?
I understand where your comming from, but i dont see how legalizing it would get rid of the pimps, and the underage sex workers from 3rd world countries.

I'm not saying it will eliminate all those problems, but I am sure it would help the majority of these women.

when the topic of "legalizing" something comes up, it is wise to start by looking at why something is "illegal". (the real reasons, not the propaganda)

I must agree that it is long past time to legalize prostitution.

If you look at places where prostitution has been legalized like the Netherlands, they have less problems. Sex trade areas are zoned, women join a guild, pay into a retirement plan, pay taxes, they don't need pimps or protection, they are medically certified....

No it won't eliminate all the problems, but it reduces them substantially. No one here is talking about legalizing child prostitution or assault. Legal sex workers can become part of the solution to those problems.

The government has no business in the bedrooms of consenting adults.

Make prostitution legal, make it a government service so that it's more widely available. Clients shouldn't have to pay but they can sign job cards for the girls to turn in for cash. I'd also like to see sex workers available at seniors' residences. A lot of these old guys and girls could use a little excitement in their lives. If prostitution was properly regulated, they'd have that. And let's get serious. Make the legal age for a prostitute 16. Eighteen is ancient these days. Sixteen makes sense and reflects the girls' mental and physical maturity.
Time to get on it. Fun is too precious to waste.
