Poverty - Canada's National shame

At first, you kind of made it sound like they're lazy and making a choice not to work because and didn't mind being poor and having roommates.

At first that is what I meant, I'm not talking about all people, but I know several who do just that, and for every rat you see there are 50 more you don't. There are people who really do need and are deserving of the help, the plain lazy ones are cheating them of resources. Since this is tax money it is really a zero sum game, these boats don't float in a rising tide.


I'm also curious why there's bus adds here (Ottawa) appealing to people to 'come home' to the Maritimes, cause there is work?

Yeah, well, so am I, so are a lot of folks, they kind of laugh, "come home to what, EI?" This is a region where theory and reality don't meet. People leave to find work because there isn't much here unless you have a skill or trade, or are in the military. Then there is wailing an gnashing of teeth because the young'ns are all leaving, well duh, they wouldn't be leaving if there was gainful employment here and won't come back 'till either their jobs dry up or they retire.

There's some truth to that. My "ex" is from Northern NB and the routine was. Work for 6 months and ask to be laid off (to collect pogey) and be replaced by your brother/sister and then repeat the cycle. She had 5 brothers and sisters and they had the routine down pat.

Not everyone is like that, but the abuses do tend to drain the "pot" from those that actually need the "social safety net"

The East Side is only the poorest poatal code 'on the books'. Off the books it is one of the richest. If you took into account all the money from the drug dealers that goes into that area for a year maybe two you could pay for the olympics. It comes in there five dollars at a time. I knew guys in my buiding 'living on welfare' who paid cash for a $300 a day habit. Welfare only pays $150/month for spending. They pull $5 hustles all day, everyday. And they are always broke because it all goes to thier habit. There are the ones who just sit there on thier arse too. They are enjoying their buzz. Once they need more drugs they move, fast. There are the odd few that show up there because of poor positions in life (myself included) if you work at it you get out. All you have to do is look around and say why would I want to live like this for the rest of my life. Damn, there are seniors there who are still trapped in the 70's because the drugs have them trapped in a time warp.

Boy, someone must have p*$$ed in your fruitloops. The colonialism you so despise helped create the wealth that allows you the opportunity to better your lot in life. Bloodshed in exchange for real estate has been going on for eons, and will continue, but folks like Robert Mugabe, Idi Amin, Ho Chi Minh, Mao Tse Tung, Pol Pot, Josef Stalin, et al are not "our" men. It is leaders like that who keep their population in poverty while they live high.

I don't "piss" on the disadvantaged, but I did bust my butt to get ahead, and I don't feel guilty for that. Most rich folks got that way by not being lazy, I do however despise those with ill gotten gains, some of them are being caught too. I don't hate the rich as you do, they seem to be the only ones who offer me work.

There is some reality in what she is saying. The ability of addicts to hustle in phenomenal. If my ex-husband was paid back every time he was hit up for 5 bucks, he might be able to afford a beer for himself. :lol:

Did you think the money they need for food is actually going for food. Hahahaha

It is going to get rid of the stomach cramps they get when they go into withdrawl and the pain relieving feature of the drug wears off.

MORE DRUGS. MORE MONEY IN THE DEALERS POCKETS.

Sit in Victoria park where you can see down the street by the Cambie. Watch all the people that enter that area in a day. Go to the McDonalds by the Glitter Town ( I think that is the name) theatre off China town and watch all the people going to that area. The only reason people would go to an area like that is to buy drugs or sell them. Some may be going to gas town but they would go to Waterfront Station. Another place is to go to main and Hastings. Stand in the Royal Bank, there is a Security guard on duty there. He may or may not through you out. Depends what you look like and if you are offending people by you appearance and acts or not.

This doesn't even go into the prostitutes further East. they are a whole story on their own. God bless em.

They're some of the types I talking about alright, I guess I've been around too long and know too many of them, and related to them too.

I didn't say it was okay, its just a fact, but if it leads to colonialism its better than totalitarianism, if you really want to see stolen wealth, and a perpetual grinder.

I have a hard time with people in low paying jobs who continuously whine about it. Those that accept they lot in life or do what needs to be done to improve it, I have no problem.

As for the Portland Society, I teach people to read and basic scholastic skills in order for them to get their GED

Are you suggesting that I whine? You were around while I was memorizing my codes and yeah - I was whining about how hard it was because it was hard. I'm used to office jobs. You also know that I chose the job I have because I choose to be the one to care for my grandchildren. I choose to do that because I will do the best job for them and I will keep them as safe as possible. You made some bitter remarks about me being a lowly cashier that are simply not in character with your volunteer work. It is good that you teach people to read but you are a poor speller so I hope you read better than you spell. Kudos to you for your efforts though.

At the end of the 80's DAFSCO did this at it's steel mills as a job sharing effort. I do believe that they have made it illegal since but the guys there liked it and there were twice as many employed.

By far and away the actual dollar amounts for drug deals are accumulated in West Vancouver and North Vancouver. The people who buy drugs in the eastside are spending $10-20 bucks a day. In the more affluent areas people drop $800/day without blinking

It was primarily forestry and road work that has the most abuses. It's just the work ethic in the Maritimes
