'Bullying' is a popular word and misused for ulterior motives at times.

We all basically know the difference between an actual schoolyard bully and the usual teasing about eye glasses, weight, clothing style, footwear, braces, hair color or whatnot.

Suicide ain't going away either but the fact that kids think the hurt they're feeling is worthy of that is insane. They're just that, 'hurt' feelings.

This girl was no angel nor the scumbag(s) that kept enabling/goading her for more. I feel badly that it comes to this but if you flash and post, don't expect the results to be the cause célèbre for 'bullying'. That's what the 'social media' morons and media experts will have you think. If they read a more complete background of stories like these they'd have a real issue to fight instead of affixing an incorrect label on it.

I think too when our wannabe gonzo-porn antagonist is finally outted in more outlets, he will feel a little uneasy. Hopefully he's not white knighted to extremes of course, we wouldn't want that now eh, just exposed as the scumbag he is.

I don't think in today's world, kids know how to handle disappointment any more, which comes with having too much done for them.

I don't think it's unique to 'today's world' JLM. That's the kicker. Did you not have at least one student commit suicide when you were in school?

I knew three students who committed suicide, and more who tried.

Depression isn't new.

The world was much better when kids were allowed to beat the snot out of each other behind the hockey warm up shack.

No, I don't recall any suicides at the schools I attended. Times were much less complicated, we went to school, came home, did chores, did our homework and went to bed and on weekends we enjoyed activities like playing Kick the can or playing cowboys & Indians and building forts in the bush or playing scrub on the local ball field.

Hmmm... apparently we are growing up faster. According to this graph, overall suicide rates are dropping since the 50's, but, the trends for who is committing suicide are shifting. People over 35 are becoming less likely to commit suicide, if I'm reading it right, whereas people younger than that, are becoming more likely.

Death Rates for Suicide, 1950

And yes, I know it's US statistics and doesn't apply to Canada 100% but it's enough of a trend for me to feel confident applying it to general social changes.

Shinny.....lots and lots of shinny. Do they still call it shinny? Come to think of it. I haven't seen kids playing shinny in ages. Maybe that is the problem?

What were the stats for people taking noggin meds because they think that something is wrong with them or it's trendy to be wired up on meds?

I guess street drugs (and other drugs) is one of the biggest differences today.

Perhaps courses in life, netiquette, sexting and camming should be compulsory for kids if the parents won't do it.

Maybe a National Initiative to make it socially unappealing.

I never knew a kid to kill themselves either. My public schools were on air bases and public high school in Ottawa.

Maybe 'hurt feelings' are a new thing.

I played shinny though. And bowling, baseball, rifle club and cubs and scouts and who knows what else. Then homework and chores and...

We could go on quite a significant side rant about meds and depression. Birth control is a huge one that a lot of people don't realize can cause depression. I went years looking downright 'bipolar', and hubby talks about how long it's been since birth control as 'how long karrie's been clean'. anti-depressants, same thing. But, I don't think it would really further the discussion about cyber bullying.

Kids going wonky on ADHD meds and the less potent slow release SSRIs don't rage like an adult when meds go wonky? Why aren't the bullys pegged for their depression?

... seems like grandstanding. just wanted her fifteen minutes of fame ...

Who the hell would seek 15 minutes of fame in such a way as to stop them from being alive to enjoy them?

The main lesson is to teach your daughters not to expose their breasts on the internet.

A lot of parents seem to find it hard to even have the 'sex talk' with their kid. I find it unlikely that many would bring up this subject. Its not exactly something the kid would want their parents to know.

This girl was no angel nor the scumbag(s) that kept enabling/goading her for more. I feel badly that it comes to this but if you flash and post, don't expect the results to be the cause célèbre for 'bullying'.

She was a kid. Its well known that the brains of kids at that age have not fully developed to the point of being able to understand long term consequences on their actions. Thats why kids tend to be stupid when using drugs and alcohol. They think they're immortal and that nothing bad could happen to them. If she had posted those pics at 18-20 or older she would have understood that this type of thing can happen. An adult would likely be able to handle this type of problem a lot better too. She posted those pics well over a year ago. 14 year olds dont think too far ahead.

If those sites claiming to have found her bully are right then there really is no excuse. He's more than twice her age. This isnt a kid on the school ground but a fully grown man who clearly understood everything he was doing. He didnt put a gun to her head to make her take the pics, but he had to have manipulated her. Older men have been known to do that to many teens or kids because they know they're weak and easily manipulated. They could get him just for having child porn if it is him.
