Well, over 40% of Canadians are considered Catholic. What affects them, affects us all.
How a religion treats women, for instance, is a worthy topic.
Maybe. But if they are unhappy about how they are being treated, they can always change religions.

Why should it matter to Goober? To any one of us?
Okay, I gotta ask, why are you so stuck on that one piece "excommunicate the whole damn mob"?
The only place that's stated is in the thread title, it's not official, it's only how the OP decided to phrase it. I'll point out that no where in the CNN article nor on the Vatican website does it say anything about the Pope "shining up his ginormous brass balls" either.
No, like I said, he was speaking in Calabria, specifically to the people of Calabria. Like I have already pointed out, he didn't mention american mobsters or the Cartel. Doesn't mean he is giving them a pass. Only a troll would be suggesting otherwise, and I have come to expect this stupidity from the likes of you.
Well, first the CNN article is incorrect when it states, "...Pope Francis told Italian Mafia members they are excommunicated..."
Has Francis opened up the Church to women? How many women priests are there?
Has Francis relaxed the discipline of the Latin Rite and allowed priests to marry?
Has Francis relaxed its teaching on birth control?
Etc.
Acksherly, it's just a spelling and pronunciation I picked up during a relatively brief period of interest in the conflict in Northern Ireland.Seems to me if you are using words like Catflick, you have several pre-conceived notions which may be getting in the way of seeing things objectively.

This is a forum, and therefore all viewpoints must be considered, not just those with which you agree.
I amended your post to numbering. I did not think you would mind this?Well, first the CNN article is incorrect when it states, "...Pope Francis told Italian Mafia members they are excommunicated..."

Some (especially alleged atheists) have trouble seperating Politics and Spirituality of the Church.
True, but have you given Pope Francis a fair shake.
Do you think change is effected overnight, or within weeks?

Again, he has spoken on those matters and is quite clear on 2 of the 3.
And you being a well read individual would know what 2 of the 3. Right?
There's a difference?
Are you looking for a date?Well, priestly celibacy has an inglorious history. And, as you know, Goober, married priests are the norm in the Eastern Rite churches in union with Rome. As well, married Anglican pastors who convert to Catholicism can serve as priests. So, the discipline in the Latin Rite is shaky at best; but, I wouldn't bet on the change.

I think this will create huge problems for the Mafia. I see it as a beginning to the end for them using the church to appear mainstream which their strong ties have always assisted with.
Organized crime is older than Christianity. They'll adapt as they always do.
