guess "they" feel the US flag must be "protected"

( does not apply to other countries -phew!!)

Sure it does. But the vote isn't over yet. And Australia has banned flag burning.

Australian flags or US flags???

seriously, I read something about this in an Aussie news outlet.

......and it really isn't a bad idea. Some things must retain respect.....and a national flag is one of them

Nope. Freedom of speech has to be maintained. If that means burn the flag when our politicians get stupid, then thats how it should be, I just hope the Senate votes no.

burning a flag is not freedom of speech. It might be freedom of expression. But how is one to know why the flag is being burned??? (particularly when there are so many issues ) Wouldn't it be smarter to VOICE discontent in other ways??? Inundate them with e-mails...(for eg)......protests groups with appropriate signs ....en masse.

Think of it this way....if it is written into the constitution, then it isn't a freedom of speech issue anymore....it's a win, win situation!!

Flag burning in my opinion is one the purest forms of free speech. Why? Because you let the government know, that they are screwing up badly.

I'll tell you why it holds alot of weight in the US. Americans have long been referred to as flag waving idiots. Well the only people that can make that claim is if their flag has no symbolic meaning.

Because it symbolizes many things to Americans and perhaps its different for everyone and since the events of 9/11 has become somewhat more emotional. Now is the time we cannot lose sight of this.

I have never burned our flag or any other flag for that matter, but they should not take that right away.

For example, I would really like to burn a flag right about now, as long as its wrapped around GWB's head.

Nothing burns in a protest better than an effigy.

Flags don't write policies, so burn the F*&^%r who wrote them instead.

I can't agree Jay. It should not be banned. The US Supreme Court was clear on this:

"If there is a bedrock principle underlying the First Amendment, it is that the Government may not prohibit the expression of an idea simply because society finds the idea itself offensive or disagreeable."

I know we don't agree here... I just think it is a noble cause....I'm a bit of a sucker for a good flag.

If it was written into the constitution...the supreme court couldn't do anything about it....

I know what you're saying also. But the Constitution is meant to give rights, not take them away. Whats next? Making abortion illegal?
