If you come upon a scene where one or more cop cars have their hood open, walk away. The hoods are up to block the dash cam and they are up to something they don't want recorded. If you happen to be witness, you could get.......... Sorry, no picture available due to technical difficulties.

As I see it anything a cop says in court that is not backed with video is a lie.

I've cought complete falsities in police and CBSA statements. Were they lies (i.e.the profision of false information with an intent to deceive) or just incompetence and bad memory? I don't know and won't speculate on that. But the mind can play tricks and memories aren't reliable.

With that, a judge most certainly ought to regard an uncorroborated police statement as equal to an uncorroborated statement provided by anyone else, granted.

However, I can still understand how a cop won't want his camera on while peeing, crapping, or having a meal break for example. I say let him turn it off during those times, but he accepts that if something happens then, then it's his word against anyone else's and that's it.

How bout this? A cop can turn off her body cam when not engaged in her duties (i.e., having lunch, using the washroom, &c.). But if she turns it off while engaged in duties, mandatory suspension without pay, in increasing lengths for subsequent violations. Double punishment if she detains or arrests a person without the camera on, even if the person doesn't complain about the detention/arrest.

I voted leaving them on. Nobody says the footage needs to be broadcast live. But if they turn them off it should only be when they are considered off duty. If they shoot someone with the camera off, it should be treated as if he was a civilian.

I got a chief of police fired because they lie like a rug
(well the forensic evidence to the police services board did)
cameras are no substitute for integrity and intelligence

Police see some very gory things. If they leave their cameras on people could see blood and guts in real life instead of watching it in video games and on tv. Wouldn't that be just lovely?

Nobody is suggesting live broadcast. Only when SIU or equivalent gets involved or court order I would suggest.

For legal reasons, isn't that when we hope the camera's on?

The media would love it. But there are scenes that police encounter than would make most normal people barf and give them nightmares. I don't think those scenes should be available for the public to see but we both know that the media would air them every chance they got.

I doubt most media would show it. But it might have to be shown in court.

You mean, just like the police are lying about violence at the Standing Rock protests? I have watched police lie since the 60s anti-war protests and this is to provoke violence. The next step will be sending in agent provocateurs to start violence they can blame on protesters. Nothing changes. The tactics are always the same. People need to wake up and stop believing their BS. There is a war going on and you are the target.
