Tell me this Paco How come W won't release the minutes from his energy summit during his first term?I'lltell you why he's fighting that release,because Cheney and the rest of the oil men were carving up Iraq before 911.Hes not stealing the oil the oil companys that supported his election bid are.He's the one who gave them the stolen oil rights from French and Russian oil companys that had them before the US invaded

The US has also considered US access to Middle Eastern oil a security matter for decades. Oil is the driving factor in most geo-political maneuverings. To deny that is to show a lack of sophistication that would indicate the denier is still in diapers.

Just six months ago, a House of Representatives bill (H.R. 163) to reinstate the draft was defeated 402-2. There is currently virtually no congressional support for a military draft.

The administration will try all other options first including increases in pay and benefits. The current all volunteer army is a major pillar of support for neocon policies. The continuous portrayal of contented, proud, ultra-nationalistic troopies does more for the administration than any other public relation attempts. With a conscript army, bush starts to lose that base of support.

I agree El The problem they have is time is not on their side .A lot of the soldiers in Iraq and Afganhistans tours are almost done They need replacements fast and they are not getting them.There in trouble period

The offence dept for quite a while now has been resorting to private contractors (i.e. mercenaries)

Not just because of things like desertion rate etc., but the military can't trust them for certain tasks. A friend of mine goes periodically to Iraq as an Arabic interpreter for communication intelligence type stuff because they don't trust the locals. I'm sure the pool of non-Arab Arabic speakers is not large (he make big bucks). I was in the conscript army from 68-70 and it is definitely the type of army that Bush wants to avoid at all costs, nixon and LBJ couldn't use us for much PR. I think he may try to raise pay and benefits. Why not? Neocons are into deficit spending--kind of a right wing keynesianism. Maxing out the national credit card like he maxed out the state credit card when he was governor of texas.

Will the higher wages bring in enough people to meet he need though? I don't think it will, not least because the demographic most opposing the war is the same one he's trying to entice to join up.

Don't know what the stats are, but there seems to be strong support for the war among non-whites and poor whites. Of course, I can only say what I observe among Mexican-Americans and poor whites. I guess bush could go recruiting south of the border promising citizenship after a completed tour of duty (I hope he doesn't see this idea now), but there would be much xenophobic opposition to that.

I read an article that said the Pentagon was thinking along those lines,but I haven't seen anything more about it

Answer - Alexander did it throughout his campaigns. A number of Roman leaders did it. As did Charlamagne, William of Orange and Peter the Great. Just don't do the war. The U.S. devastated Iraq and then stole $9 Billion during the first part of the occupation. The reparations funds are filtered through private U.S. companies with the inside track to the White House. And yet many Iraqi do not have electricity, running water, safe streets or a government that reflects the will of the People.

A draft is likely and Canada should open its borders to those Americans of conscious who oppose the war. I worked with the dodgers and deserters from the Viet Nam period. Wonderful people seeking help from a neighbor as their house collapses.
