I do believe that pedophiles are part of the human race and infiltrate every aspect of all societies, religions and political movements. However, one of the things the church used to do (not sure if they still do) is excommunicate or condemn to hell people in their congregations for varies "crimes" deemed worthy by the church. For many, the threat of excommunication was a death sentence as it meant that you were doomed to hell. But that little bit of BS has been wavered if you are a priest and that is where the hypocrisy comes in. I excommunicated the church from myself because of all the hypocrisy I saw back in the 60s and although one never really escapes the brainwashing, mental and emotional abuses inflicted by the church, I have managed to have a rather personal relationship with my creator that does not involve the jealous, angry and vengeful god of the Judaeo/Christian/Islamic faiths.

I always wonder at people who think it's the job of churches to enforce the law.

The Catholic church has a process for forgiveness: for child rapists, mass murderers, and evildoers of all sorts. If Hitler had lived to be imprisoned and confessed, he too would have been forgiven. That's Catholic doctrine.

Now, I'm not a believer or anything, and I would like it if the Catholic church told this priest (after he got out of prison) that he was being assigned to a monastery high in the hills for the rest of his life (or until he quit, which priests can do), but the Catholic church in this case did nothing inconsistent with their theology and doctrine.

A handful of studies compiled by the Center for the Prevention of Sexual and Domestic Violence, some more than a decade old, suggest that up to 15 percent of clergy members in all religious groups have engaged in some inappropriate conduct, whether a stolen kiss or full-fledged sexual abuse. But few authoritative statistics are available on the number and type of complaints, and what information churches collect is usually kept secret.

''Unfortunately, there's no hard data,''

Abuse by Clergy Is Not Just a Catholic Problem - The New York Times

Problem: there are too many cover ups and much suppression of the truth. So what are the actual numbers? Sadly, we will never know.

I have very little patience with this kind of shit! Desecration/violation of a child ranks very high as far as heinous crime is concerned. Personally I don't think there is an obligation to forgive this type of Crime EVER! However I acknowledge there are exceptions to every rule. The first thing that would have to be taken into account is the amount of time elapsed between the commission of the crime and the forgiveness. That would just be the first of many steps.

And teachers, scout leaders, coaches, relatives, friends, and on and on and on. Point is, it's not just a "religious" problem.

The problem is, all three Abrahamic religions can be shown to be total scams,
THEN you have the kidsex problem with some of their so called 'Holy' people

Abstract
Previous investigations have indicated that the ratio of sex offenders against female children vs. offenders against male children is approximately 2:1, while the ratio of gynephiles to androphiles among the general population is approximately 20:1. The present study investigated whether the etiology of preferred partner sex among pedophiles is related to the etiology of preferred partner sex among males preferring adult partners. Using phallometric test sensitivities to calculate the proportion of true pedophiles among various groups of sex offenders against children, and taking into consideration previously reported mean numbers of victims per offender group, the ratio of heterosexual to homosexual pedophiles was calculated to be approximately 11:1. This suggests that the resulting proportion of true pedophiles among persons with a homosexual erotic development is greater than that in persons who develop heterosexually. This, of course, would not indicate that androphilic males have a greater propensity to offend against children.https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/1556756

Largely true. But when the churches, who are supposedly there to serve as the moral guarantors of society, engage in this horrendous behavior it becomes especially compelling. Further, it appears that when they are caught society lets down its guard and sidesteps the evils of the other institutions that you mentioned. As you suggest, all wicked misconduct must be prevented. So let's begin with these so called moral guarantors and be mindful that the others are equally at fault.

Also there is a big difference between forgiveness and absolving the perpetrator of any penalty!
