Ottawa promises $40M in carbon tax cash to upgrade 172 Ontario schools

The federal government says it's spending more than $40 million of carbon tax revenue to make Ontario schools more energy efficient.

The money will go to 172 schools across the province, funding projects such as replacing roofs and increasing insulation.

Environment and Climate Change Minister Jonathan Wilkinson says the investment will make classrooms more comfortable and healthier for students and teachers.

He says the upgrades will help schools save on energy costs, while improving air quality -- a hot-button issue during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The government notes that in provinces such as Ontario, which do not have their own price on carbon and instead have the federal carbon tax, all of the money goes back to the jurisdiction in which it was collected.

It says 90 per cent of the cash is doled out to individuals in their tax returns, while the remaining 10 per cent is spent on projects meant to reduce pollution.

The dollar value on the investments may still change, but a list of projects ranges in price from $660 to nearly $2 million.

I thought the money was supposed to go back to the provincial governments not some TrueDope feel good projects that happen to be in said province.

Given that this idiot (TrueDope) is going to keep this tax, the provinces should replace it with one of their own to at least keep the money out of TrueDope's hands.

No, he missed it completely. The grants will go towards increasing energy efficiency thus reducing fuel requirements. IRBS skipped over that little fact in favour of Trudeau bashing.
And they are getting the money from where with no national Carbon tax just Provincial forced and unforced tax?

So , if as you claim 90% is given back then why rip us off in the first place except to provide jobs for government employees? Kind of like paying a $5 processing fee for a free permit.

If those schools need upgrading, it shouldn't have taken "carbon taxes" to upgrade them. That's what property taxes & transfers from have provinces are for.

When one is upgrading their home or even building one, would you not want to ensure that the best of products are used? Why would anyone build a house without proper insulation or upgrade a house and not upgrade products that may not have been available when it was originally built? This announcement is nothing but propaganda to show Canadians, even while it hurts us in the pocket book, look - it's ok because we're "upgrading some schools in Ontario". These schools likely needed to be upgraded with or without the carbon tax. "Upgraded" means it's improved with new and better products.

Lets face it - this whole "announcement" is disingenuous and it's only purpose is to make us all "feel good" and "happy" about paying carbon taxes over and above all the other taxes we pay. After all, we really don't even know where the carbon tax is actually going so apparently the government thought by throwing this out there, we will all sit back and say: aaahh, so that's where the money is going. It's a "feel good" thing.

Potential election call in the Spring. Groper decides to announce his $40m carbon tax cash upgrade to Ontario schools in a desperate attempt to buy the votes of Ontarians. By the way, that works out to less than $250,000 per school. $250,000 don't get you much these days. Especially when you see how school boards spend money, like the TDSB paying over $400 for each new pencil sharpener that was installed in their classrooms.

Here's the thing about the bullshit that 90% gets returned to the taxpayers. The feds claim to have collected over $2 billion in carbon taxes and spent $225 million on "green" shit, refunding the rest to the taxpayers. So the question is, why charge a carbon tax only to give 90% of it back just to have $225 million to spend. Why not take that $225 million from the over $6.5 BILLION we waste on foreign aid every year and quit lying to us about how carbon taxes will save the planet.

So let's get this into better perspective.

They are going peal off the old tar membrane to insulate roofs with petroleum based polystyrene and reapply fresh petroleum tar membrane all in the name of reducing fossil fuel usage?

DuPont and Koch must be pickled tink aboot that eh?

One more benefit of online learning is to not have to maintain public infrastructure.

Ontario spends $25 billion annually on public education. Basically a guaranteed income sector with no return on investment.
